Rentokil has the best marketing of the five big UK pest control and locksmith brands compared, scoring 7.6 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Every brand below was reviewed manually across seven marketing channels in August 2026, using publicly visible activity only. Scores are relative to the other brands in this comparison. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
In this industry, marketing is what happens at 2am.
Nobody browses locksmiths. You are locked out, or there is a rat in the kitchen, and you ring the first name you trust. The cowboys understood this before anyone: complaints to the Master Locksmiths Association about misleading locksmiths rose from 280 in 2023 to 402 in 2025, with one victim billed £2,300 for work worth £350.
Which makes this leaderboard unusual. The brands here win not by being clever, but by being findable and provably safe at the moment of panic. And the most trusted brand in the set, arguably the most trusted service brand in Britain, only finishes fourth, because trust without a funnel loses the 2am moment.

Company verdicts
Rentokil, 7.6
The world’s largest pest control company by its own description, with over a century of UK trading and around a thousand frontline specialists here. Rentokil wins the way category giants should: it owns the informational search results, with the reference library for every pest a British household can meet, seasonal guides included, feeding a postcode branch finder and an online booking flow sweetened with a survey discount. The contract model and myRentokil portal handle retention. Its parent claims over 30,000 UK reviews at 4.6 or better on Trustpilot. Worth knowing: parent company Rentokil Initial had a bumpy July 2026 with investors after softening a key margin target. The consumer marketing machine, though, remains the strongest on this table.
Fantastic Pest Control, 6.7
The only brand in the set where you can book a pest visit the way you book a taxi: online or in-app, with published package prices, from £184 for a two-visit treatment, and a claimed one-hour emergency response, night surcharge included. Retention runs through the £89-a-year Fantastic Club and referral credits, the strongest owned-audience machinery here. The catch is depth: coverage is strongest inside the M25, and while the parent platform cites over 50,000 Trustpilot reviews rated Excellent, the pest arm itself shows only a few hundred Google reviews at 4.5, checked August 2026. Big platform proof, thin service-level proof.
JG Pest Control, 6.3
Founded in 2010 and built almost entirely on two assets: speed and reviews. The emergency landing page is the best in the set, with 24/7 availability, same-day callouts, two phone numbers above the fold, live chat, a coverage checker and a free re-treatment guarantee. The review engine is remarkable for a business this young: the company states around 34,869 reviews across Trustpilot and Google at 4.6 to 4.8, as of August 2026, and claims to be the highest-rated pest control company on Trustpilot. Beyond that funnel there is not much: no email programme, modest social, a functional brand. But as a demonstration of how a challenger beats a century-old giant on the channels that convert, it is the case study.
Timpson, 5.9
The best brand in the set, and it is not close. Family-owned since 1865, around 2,100 stores, famous for hiring ex-offenders, upside-down management and a culture story so strong that its former boss James Timpson was made prisons minister in 2024. That reputation earns press no budget could buy, and turnover reached £347m with £48m profit in its latest filed accounts. But walk the emergency locksmith funnel and the shine fades: the callout service lives on a separate site with no published prices, no response-time promise and no reviews shown. Britain’s most trusted high-street name, losing the 2am search to a franchise from Poole. Brand is a moat, not a funnel.
Keytek, 5.7
Founded in Poole in 1997 as a two-man emergency locksmith outfit, now describing itself as the largest national locksmith, with its own NCFE-approved training academy. Keytek is purpose-built for the panic search: half-hour response promises, no call-out charge, DBS-checked engineers, a postcode widget, local landing pages with local numbers and named technicians, and dedicated PPC landing pages behind the ads. It cites a 4.6 from 636 Feefo reviews, with a Trustpilot base running to several thousand more, approximate, checked August 2026. What it lacks is everything around the funnel: minimal social, no email, a brand nobody would miss. All funnel, no flywheel, and in an emergency trade that still beats the reverse.
What the channels show
The 2am test decides the winner
Every brand here is an answer to the same question: who do you trust at the moment of panic? Rentokil answers with search dominance, Keytek with a 30-minute promise, JG with review volume, Fantastic with a booking button, Timpson with reputation. The ranking shows which answers convert when the customer is stressed and in a hurry.
The cowboys are running a marketing operation
Rogue locksmiths quote £40 online and charge hundreds at the door, impersonate established firms and flood search results with paid ads and fake reviews. There is no government licensing for locksmiths, so anyone can trade tomorrow. The legitimate brands on this table win precisely because the sector’s default is distrust, and every trust signal they publish, DBS checks, MLA accreditation, review counts, is a direct counter to the scam playbook.
Reviews are the shelf trust sits on
JG, founded in 2010, competes with a hundred-year-old giant on one asset: tens of thousands of reviews it asked for after every job. In a distress purchase, a big recent review count answers the fear faster than any heritage claim.
A great reputation still needs a funnel
Timpson proves it. A ten-out-of-ten brand attached to a locksmith page with no prices, no reviews and no response promise finishes behind three companies a fraction of its age. The lesson is uncomfortable and useful: sentiment does not convert emergencies, structure does.
Key lessons for any emergency trade
Answer the 2am question above the fold
Phone number, response-time promise, proof you are safe to let in. Those three things, visible without scrolling, beat pages of prose. Keytek’s homepage is the template.
Build the review engine into the job
Ask after every single callout, reply to every review, and publish the count. The gap between JG and Timpson on this channel is a process gap, not a quality gap.
Say what the visit costs, or what it starts from
The scam playbook depends on price shock at the door. A published call-out fee or “from” price is both a conversion asset and a trust signal that separates you from the cowboys.
Own your emergency search terms locally
A maintained Google Business Profile and a genuinely local page, with your town in the title, real photos and a local number, is how small firms beat national call centres and rogue ad-buyers in the results that matter.
Wear your accreditations loudly
MLA membership, BPCA certification, DBS checks: in a sector with no licensing, third-party accreditation is the closest thing to proof. Put the logos where the panicked visitor will see them in three seconds.
Steal this playbook
Five moves any pest control or locksmith business can make this month, in order.
- Rebuild your homepage top section: phone number, response promise and one trust proof, visible on a phone screen without scrolling.
- Publish your call-out fee or a “prices from” figure, and say there are no hidden charges, then honour it.
- Send a review request after every completed job, pointing at Google first, and reply to everything.
- Add your accreditations, insurance and DBS checks to the homepage and every service page, with logos.
- Claim and maintain your Google Business Profile with weekly photos of real jobs, and list your genuine service area, not a fantasy one.
Common questions
Which UK pest control company has the best marketing in 2026?
Rentokil tops our comparison with a 7.6 average, strong on every channel and dominant in search. JG Pest Control is the challenger story, competing on review volume and emergency conversion rather than brand.
Who has the most reviews in this sector?
JG Pest Control states around 34,869 reviews across Trustpilot and Google at 4.6 to 4.8 as of August 2026. Rentokil’s parent claims over 30,000 UK reviews at 4.6 or better. Both figures are company-stated.
How do I avoid rogue locksmiths?
Check for Master Locksmiths Association approval, get the price confirmed before work starts, and be wary of generic ads quoting £40 to £60 call-outs. MLA complaints about misleading locksmiths reached 402 in 2025, with bait-and-switch pricing the most common trick.
Is Timpson a locksmith?
Yes. Alongside shoe repairs and keys, Timpson runs a 24/7 mobile locksmith service through its security arm, with MLA accreditation and DBS-checked staff. Its around 2,100 stores make it the biggest high-street presence in the sector.
What can a small emergency trade copy from these brands?
Three things: an above-the-fold answer to the 2am question like Keytek, a systematic review ask after every job like JG, and published pricing to counter the scam playbook. All three cost time rather than money.
