Email marketing still delivers the highest ROI of any digital marketing channel. Campaign Monitor’s 2025 data puts it at roughly £36 returned for every £1 spent. For UK small businesses, it remains the most reliable way to turn existing contacts into repeat customers.
The problem is not whether email marketing works. It is choosing between platforms that all claim to do the same thing. Mailchimp, Brevo, and MailerLite each target small businesses, but they approach pricing, features, and complexity very differently.
We tested all three with real UK email lists, real campaigns, and real GDPR requirements. Here is what we found.
Before You Pick a Platform
If your email list is under 500 contacts and you send fewer than four campaigns a month, all three platforms will do the job on their free plans. Do not overthink it. Pick one and start sending.
If you are migrating from another platform, check two things before committing: whether the new platform can import your existing subscriber segments (not just the raw list), and whether your current opt-in forms and landing pages will need rebuilding. Migration is where most small businesses lose momentum.
GDPR compliance matters. All three platforms support double opt-in and GDPR-compliant consent tracking, but you need to configure it correctly. It is not enabled by default on any of them.
1. Mailchimp

Mailchimp is the name most people think of when they hear “email marketing,” and for small businesses sending straightforward campaigns, it still works well. The drag-and-drop editor is intuitive, the template library is the largest of the three, and the brand recognition means your recipients are less likely to flag your emails as spam.
The free plan covers 500 contacts and 1,000 sends per month (with a daily limit of 500). The Essentials plan starts at £10.30/month for 500 contacts and adds A/B testing, email scheduling, and removes the Mailchimp badge. Standard at £15.45/month adds automation, send-time optimisation, and behavioural targeting. Premium at £257.50/month adds advanced segmentation, phone support, and comparative reporting.
What is good
The template library is genuinely excellent. Hundreds of pre-built designs that look professional without needing a designer. The drag-and-drop editor is the easiest of the three to use. The analytics dashboard gives you open rates, click rates, revenue tracking, and subscriber growth in a clean layout. If you have a Shopify or WooCommerce store, the e-commerce integrations are strong, pulling in purchase data automatically. The Content Optimiser (Standard plan and above) uses AI to suggest improvements to your subject lines and body copy before you send. It is not perfect but catches obvious mistakes.
Watch out for
Pricing scales steeply as your list grows. At 2,500 contacts, Essentials jumps to £34.10/month, and at 10,000 contacts, you are paying £77.25/month for what is still a basic email tool. Mailchimp charges for unsubscribed and inactive contacts unless you manually archive them. This catches many UK businesses off guard, as your bill creeps up even when engagement drops. The free plan now includes the Mailchimp logo on every email you send and limits you to one audience (list). For a business, this can feel unprofessional.
GDPR compliance
Mailchimp supports GDPR-compliant signup forms with configurable consent fields. You can add GDPR checkboxes to embedded forms and pop-ups. Double opt-in is available but not enabled by default. Data processing agreements are available through the platform settings. Mailchimp’s servers are US-based, but they comply with EU-US Data Privacy Framework requirements.
Best for: Small businesses that want the easiest setup with the most template options. Particularly strong for e-commerce businesses on Shopify or WooCommerce who want revenue tracking built into their email analytics.
2. Brevo (formerly Sendinblue)

Brevo is the platform that makes the most sense financially for UK small businesses with growing lists. While Mailchimp and MailerLite charge based on subscriber count, Brevo charges based on email volume. You can have 100,000 contacts and pay the same monthly fee, as long as you stay within your send limit.
The free plan allows 300 emails per day with unlimited contacts. Starter at £7/month gives 5,000 emails per month (no daily limit). Business at £14/month adds marketing automation, A/B testing, landing pages, and send-time optimisation. Enterprise pricing is custom.
What is good
The pricing model is the standout. Unlimited contacts on every plan, including free. If you have a large list but only email them occasionally (monthly newsletters, for example), Brevo will cost a fraction of what Mailchimp charges. Built-in SMS marketing on all paid plans. You can run email and SMS campaigns from the same platform with the same contact list. For UK businesses running appointment reminders, delivery notifications, or flash sales, this is a genuine advantage. The automation builder on the Business plan is surprisingly powerful for the price. You can build multi-step workflows triggered by email opens, clicks, website visits, or contact properties. Transactional email is included. Order confirmations, password resets, and shipping notifications run through the same platform as your marketing campaigns.
Watch out for
The free plan includes a Brevo logo on every email and caps you at 300 sends per day. For a business sending to even a modest list, you will hit that daily limit quickly. The email editor is functional but less polished than Mailchimp. Templates are more limited, and the drag-and-drop builder feels slightly less intuitive. If design matters to your brand, you may find yourself spending more time tweaking layouts. Reporting is solid on the Business plan but basic on Starter. You get open rates and click rates, but advanced analytics like revenue attribution require the higher tier.
GDPR compliance
Brevo is a French company with EU-based servers, which gives it a natural advantage for GDPR compliance. Data is processed within the EU by default. GDPR consent forms, double opt-in, and data processing agreements are built in. The platform also supports consent tracking for SMS marketing, which matters if you use both channels.
Best for: UK businesses with large contact lists that do not email frequently, or businesses that want email and SMS marketing in one platform. The unlimited contacts model makes it the most cost-effective option for growing lists.
3. MailerLite

MailerLite is the platform that punches above its weight. It is less well-known than Mailchimp but consistently outperforms it on value for money, especially for UK small businesses that need landing pages, automation, and a clean editor without paying premium prices.
The free plan covers 1,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month with access to the drag-and-drop editor, landing pages, pop-ups, and basic automation. Growing Business at £8/month (for 500 subscribers) removes the MailerLite logo, adds A/B testing and auto-resend, and includes unlimited emails. Advanced at £16/month adds Facebook integration, a custom HTML editor, promotion pop-ups, and priority support.
What is good
The free plan is the most generous of the three platforms. 1,000 subscribers, 12,000 emails per month, landing pages, pop-ups, and basic automation included. For a new business just starting with email marketing, you can run a professional operation without paying anything for months. The landing page builder is excellent and included on all plans. You can build sign-up pages, product launch pages, and lead magnet delivery pages without a separate tool. This saves £20-50/month compared to using a dedicated landing page builder. The email editor is clean and fast. It does not have as many templates as Mailchimp, but the ones it has are well-designed and the editor is responsive enough that building from scratch is not painful. Website builder included on paid plans. If you need a simple site alongside your email marketing, MailerLite can handle both.
Watch out for
The approval process for new accounts can be slow. MailerLite manually reviews every new account to prevent spam, which means you might wait 24-48 hours before you can send your first campaign. Plan for this if you are on a deadline. The free plan does not include the auto-resend feature (automatically re-sending to subscribers who did not open your first email). This feature alone, available from the Growing Business plan, can boost open rates by 10-15%. E-commerce integrations are less developed than Mailchimp. The Shopify and WooCommerce connections exist but lack the depth of Mailchimp’s revenue tracking and product recommendations.
GDPR compliance
MailerLite is a Lithuanian company with EU-based data processing. GDPR compliance is built into the platform by default, including consent tracking, double opt-in, and data processing agreements. The platform automatically handles unsubscribe requests and data deletion requests in line with GDPR requirements. The Bottom Line
For most UK small businesses just starting with email marketing, MailerLite is the strongest choice. The free plan is genuinely usable, landing pages are included at every tier, and the paid plans offer the best value for money. If you are sending your first campaigns and want to look professional without spending £15-20/month, start here.
If you run an e-commerce business on Shopify or WooCommerce, Mailchimp is worth the premium. The revenue tracking, product recommendations, and abandoned cart automations are deeper than either competitor. You will pay more, but you will also see exactly how much revenue each email generates.
If you have a large list but email infrequently, Brevo is the obvious pick. The unlimited contacts model means a list of 10,000 people costs the same as a list of 100. Add in SMS marketing and transactional emails from the same platform, and Brevo becomes a communications hub rather than just an email tool.
All three platforms handle GDPR compliance. All three offer automation, A/B testing, and decent analytics on their paid plans. The right choice depends on your list size, sending frequency, and whether you need features beyond email.
