Ask an AI tool to recommend an opticians and you can probably guess the first name that comes back. Specsavers topped our opticians and eye care leaderboard with the highest score we have given any brand in any industry, and its dominance carries straight through into AI answers.
Most independent opticians read that and conclude the game is rigged. It is not. It is rigged against competing with Specsavers on Specsavers’ terms.
Nobody asks AI for a cheap eye test and gets an independent recommended. But that is not the question your best customers ask. They ask who can help with a child’s worsening eyesight, or dry eyes that drops no longer fix, or specialist contact lens fitting, or frames that do not look like everyone else’s. On those questions the chains are weak, and AI has to look for whoever has made their expertise visible.
The problem is that most independents have not made it visible. The expertise is real, the evidence is not online.
What people actually ask AI
Opticians near me that do myopia management. Best place for a dry eye assessment in the town name. Independent opticians with unusual frames. Optician who is good with anxious children. Specialist contact lens fitting after keratoconus. How much is an eye test without an NHS voucher.
Every one of those questions is a niche the chains serve badly. Every one is answered from the public record of your practice: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your website and the registers.
Why AI leaves independents out
Your Google Business Profile
It needs the correct categories, real photos of the practice and frame range, current hours, and services listed by name: eye examinations, contact lens fitting, myopia management, dry eye clinic, home visits if you do them. AI cannot recommend you for a service it cannot see written down.
Your reviews
The chains win on volume, so independents must win on substance and recency. Reviews that mention specific things, the thorough examination, the frame advice, the way the optometrist explained a result, are exactly what AI tools quote when explaining a recommendation. Ask at collection, when the customer is happiest, and keep asking every week.
Your specialisms, stated plainly
If you run a dry eye clinic, that needs its own page saying what it is, what it costs and who it is for. Same for myopia management, low vision, complex prescriptions and any hospital or referral work. One plain page per specialism is the difference between being an opticians and being the answer to a question.
Your registration
Optometrists and dispensing opticians are regulated by the General Optical Council, and the register is public. State your clinicians’ names and GOC registration on your website in text. Verifiable credentials are one of the strongest signals separating a professional practice from a retail operation, and AI tools lean on them.
What to fix, in order
- Complete every field on your Google Business Profile, with services named individually and photos that show the actual practice.
- Make sure your practice name, address and phone number match across every directory and NHS listing. Conflicting records read as doubt.
- Publish one plain page per specialism, with the price. These pages are what AI quotes.
- Name your optometrists on the website with their GOC registration, in text not images.
- Ask for a Google review at every collection and reply to all of them.
Common questions
Can an independent opticians really compete with Specsavers in AI results?
Not on price and not on volume, but yes on specific questions. AI answers are question shaped. When someone asks about myopia management, dry eye treatment or specialist fitting in your town, a complete profile, named clinicians and detailed reviews will beat a chain branch with none of those things. The independents that lose are the ones whose expertise exists only inside the building.
Does my NHS work affect AI visibility?
Indirectly. NHS listings are another public record of your practice, and inconsistencies between them and your other listings create confusion. Check that your NHS profile carries the same name, address, hours and services as everywhere else.
Find out where you stand
Run the free check in check if AI recommends your business, then fix the gaps in order. For the bigger shift behind all this, read how UK businesses get found by AI search.
The advice on this page is drawn from our own testing of AI assistants, not from guesswork. We put buyer style questions to Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini, recorded which businesses each one named, and checked those names against the Companies House register.
The most recent trade level rounds were run in July and August 2026, across 15 UK towns. Two findings shape most of what you read here: the engines rarely agree with each other, and a business can be recommended while its registered company is dissolved or in liquidation.

AI answers vary between runs and change over time. These are findings from dated tests, not a description of how any engine will behave on the day you ask. Queries were run by hand through each engine’s standard web interface.
