A Whito point of view, not a survey. Where we use numbers, we link them.
Since last November, every UK company director has been required to verify their identity with Companies House. The transition period ends on 17 November this year. After that come blocked filings, civil penalties and, for the persistent, prosecution.
At the six month mark, roughly a third of the six to seven million people affected had done it. The check itself takes about two and a half minutes.
Most directors have filed this under admin, somewhere behind the van insurance. That is a mistake. It is not admin. It is about to become marketing.

The mistake: treating the register as back office
The public register is not a filing cabinet any more. It is a surface that customers, lenders, insurers and, increasingly, AI engines read when they decide whether your business is real.
We know the machines are checking, because we check what they recommend. When Whito verified AI tradesperson recommendations against Companies House, a quarter of the heating engineers could not be verified at all, and one recommended roofer had been dissolved since 2017. The engines are drowning in names they cannot confirm. What they reward is the business whose record checks out.
Now run the November scenario. A director who has not verified cannot file. A company that cannot file starts to look, on paper, exactly like a company that is dying. Late accounts, a stalled record, a compliance flag. We have audited what happens to businesses that look dead online: they get filtered out of the choosing process long before anyone rings them.
Verification is becoming a ranking signal in everything but name
Nobody at Google or OpenAI will announce it. But every system that recommends businesses is converging on the same cheap test: can this company be confirmed by a source the business does not control?
A verified, current, consistent Companies House record is exactly that source. It is free, it is official, and from November the gap between businesses that have it in order and businesses that do not becomes wider and more visible than it has ever been.
What to do this week
Verify now, not in November. It takes minutes today. It will take a queue, a panic and possibly a blocked filing if you leave it until the deadline month.
Read your own record as a stranger would. Does the trading name connect to the registered name? Is the address consistent with your website and your Google listing? Does the SIC code describe what you actually do?
Make the checkable things match everywhere. Register, website, listings, reviews profile. Every mismatch is a doubt, and doubts compound at exactly the moment someone was ready to choose you.
The sharp takeaway
From 17 November, an unverified director is a public gap on a public register, and both customers and machines will be able to see it.
Two and a half minutes of admin is currently the cheapest marketing in Britain. Boring, checkable accuracy wins again. It usually does.
