The question this answers: can you trust online reviews and star ratings for UK tradespeople? Based on Whito’s verification data, 2026.
Britain runs on star ratings. Five gold stars decides who fixes your boiler, does your accounts and reroofs your house. And the five stars are the easiest trust signal in the country to game.
The mistake: confusing popularity with existence
A review tells you someone says they were happy. It does not tell you the business is real, registered, insured or qualified. Those are different questions, and almost nobody asks them.
We do ask them, in bulk, and the answers are grim.
We checked 64 UK tradespeople found through normal online searching against Companies House. 19 could not be verified.
We checked 100 UK directory listings the same way. 29 failed. Listings for businesses that could not be matched to any live record, sitting in directories that sell trust by the month.
We searched for a heating engineer in 15 UK towns and a quarter of what came back could not be verified. Plenty of it came with lovely ratings.
Star ratings sat on top of all of that like icing on a cake nobody baked.
Why reviews became the weakest signal
Reviews were a good idea when they were scarce and hard to fake. Now they are a commodity. They can be bought in bulk, traded between mates, generated by AI in convincing regional English, and filtered so the bad ones never surface. Whole businesses exist to manufacture them.
Meanwhile the signals that are actually hard to fake sit in public, free, ignored. A Companies House record with real filing history. A Gas Safe number that matches the name on the van. An NICEIC or NFRC entry. Years of trading you can count. These take years to build and minutes to check, which is exactly why almost nobody checks them and every fraudster leans on stars instead.
The part the review platforms will not say
Any platform whose revenue depends on volume of reviews has no incentive to make verification the headline. Checking businesses out of existence shrinks the marketplace. So the industry keeps polishing the star, and the star keeps meaning less.
Our position: a checkable business with 12 honest reviews beats an unverifiable one with 400 glowing ones, every time, for anything that matters.
What to do instead
If you are hiring: check the company exists on Companies House, check the register that covers the trade, and only then read reviews, as colour rather than evidence.
If you run a business: stop treating reviews as your foundation. They are decoration on top of being verifiable. Get the record straight first, the register number visible, the name consistent everywhere. That is the trust customers and AI tools can actually check, and increasingly the one they do.
The sharp takeaway
Five-star ratings are the most gamed trust signal in Britain because they are the only major one with no anchor to a public record. In our own checks, roughly three in ten online business listings could not be verified at all, stars and all.

How do I check a tradesperson is a real company in the UK?
Search the exact name on Companies House, confirm the status is Active, and check the trade’s register, such as Gas Safe for gas work or NICEIC for electricians. It takes minutes and is far harder to fake than reviews.
Are star ratings fake?
Not all, but they are cheap to manufacture and impossible to anchor to a public record, which makes them the easiest trust signal to game. Registration records and register entries take years to build, so they are the stronger check.
