Your business has a website. You paid for it, you filled it with pages about how trusted and professional you are, and when an AI tool answers a customer in your town, it ignores you and cites a Reddit thread instead.

Here is the uncomfortable opinion: it is right to.

We logged every website ChatGPT and Gemini cited across 36 UK business recommendation questions. Reddit won. Not the businesses. Not the directories that charge for membership. A forum.

That result annoys almost everyone who hears it, which is usually the sign of a result worth understanding.

Why the machine prefers a forum to your homepage

Think about what your website says. We are reliable. We are professional. High quality work at competitive prices. Every competitor’s site says the same, because you all bought the same kind of website from the same kind of agency.

A model reading ten thousand identical claims learns nothing from any of them. There is no information in a sentence every business says.

Now think about what a Reddit thread says. Someone in Wakefield had a boiler fail on a Sunday. They name who came out, what it cost, what went wrong, who they would never call again. Specific, first-hand, argued over in the replies, with dates.

One of those two sources contains something a machine cannot generate itself. It is not your homepage.

The mistake is treating this as unfair

Most marketing advice responds to this with tricks. Post fake-casual answers on Reddit. Seed forum threads. Astroturf.

Bad idea. Communities and platforms have spent years learning to smell it, models are being trained to discount it, and getting caught torches the one thing this whole game runs on, which is being checkable.

The honest response is to make your own footprint carry the same qualities the forum thread has. Specifics instead of claims. Numbers instead of adjectives. Proof instead of polish.

What that looks like in practice

Publish what only you know. Real prices for real jobs. What a boiler swap in your town actually cost last month. The three faults you see most and what each costs to fix. That is first-hand data, and machines cite what they cannot invent.

Be verifiable everywhere. Same trading name, same number, a Companies House record that matches, register entries where your trade has them. A citation has to land somewhere checkable.

And put a point of view where people compare notes. Not spam, your actual name answering actual questions in the places your customers already ask them. One genuinely useful named answer is worth fifty anonymous plugs.
