A Whito point of view, not a survey. Where we use numbers, we link them.
OpenAI announced its move into advertising in June, began testing ads in the US, and on 11 August 2026 added the UK to the test. Sponsored units, labelled and set apart from the answer, shown to logged-in adults on the free tiers. The sales pitches to small businesses will not be far behind.
The pitch writes itself. Your business, inside the tool everyone is asking.
We sell AI visibility services, so you might expect us to cheer anything that puts small businesses inside AI answers. We are not cheering.

The mistake: thinking the ad fixes being invisible
Look at where the sponsored slot sits. Under the answer. Beside the answer. Never inside it.
The answer itself still recommends whoever the model actually trusts. If the engine does not know your business exists, an ad next to its answer is a billboard outside your competitor’s front door. The customer asked who to hire. The model named someone else. You paid for the privilege of standing nearby.
The gap between known and unknown businesses is measurable. A study of 10,000 local businesses found that firms visible in AI recommendations averaged 133 Google reviews against 11 for the invisible ones, and that while 93% of local businesses are known to AI, only 55% have accurate details attached. The engines are not short of names. They are short of businesses they can trust.
Rented placement is the lead treadmill with a new coat of paint
We have written before that buying leads is a monthly payment to postpone building a strategy. Paid AI placement obeys the same arithmetic. The day you stop paying, you vanish. The presence you earn inside the answer, through being verifiable, reviewed and citable, compounds and never sends an invoice.
There is also a subtler cost. Money spent renting a slot is money not spent fixing the reason the model would not name you for free.
When the ads will make sense
We are not anti-advertising. A business in the Build or Scale stage, with a proven offer, matching details everywhere and a reputation the engine can check, can treat paid placement as fuel on a fire that is already burning.
But that is the order. Structure, then spend. An ad can amplify trust that exists. It cannot substitute for trust that does not.
The sharp takeaway
An ad buys you a seat next to the conversation. It does not buy you the recommendation inside it.
If ChatGPT does not name your business today, that is not a media buying problem, and no budget will make it one. Fix being unknown to the engine first. Then decide whether the seat is worth renting.

Correction, 13 August 2026: an earlier version of this piece said ChatGPT had been showing ads to UK users since early June. OpenAI announced its advertising plans in June and began testing in the US; ads reached UK users on 11 August 2026. The argument is unchanged.
