Sunsave scores highest of the ten UK home energy installer brands compared, at 7.1 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand, using publicly visible activity only: nine brands on 22 October 2026 and EDF on 23 October 2026, against fixed anchors and the same ten UK searches. Meta ad counts for all ten were read on 23 October 2026. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the service. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
Solar, heat pumps and EV chargers are bought on price and trust, and most of the big names now show both. Nine of the ten brands show at least one price on their site, and nine score 10 on paid. What separates them is search.
Sunsave scores 7.1, a tenth ahead of Octopus Energy on 7.0, with British Gas third on 6.4. Sunsave appeared in 5 of 10 UK searches, including four of the five city searches for solar installers. Only one other brand, Heatable, appeared in any of them.
Smart Home Charge scores lowest at 5.3, the only brand here with no active Meta ads found, though no brand on the board scores below 5.

Company verdicts
Sunsave, 7.1
Sunsave scores 7.1, the highest of the ten. It is the search leader by a distance: sunsave.energy appeared in 5 of 10 UK searches, including ‘how much do solar panels cost UK’ and four of the five city searches, and an advice library adds a point, so SEO scores 9. Reviews score 8 from 4.8 on 452 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 14 of the latest 20. Its website scores 7, showing a worked monthly price (240 payments of £69) with MCS named. Brand scores 6 with its co-founders named. Paid scores 10, with about 300 Google ads and 21 active Meta ads, and email 4 for a login.
Octopus Energy, 7.0
Octopus Energy scores 7.0, second on the board, a tenth behind Sunsave. Its website scores 10: solar can be ordered online and EV charger installation is priced from £949. Reviews score 8 from 4.8 on 897,760 Trustpilot reviews, by far the most here, with no replies on the latest 20. Email scores 6 for its app and account, and brand 6 with named blog authors. Paid scores 10, with about 2,000 Google ads and 32 active Meta ads. octopus.energy appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
British Gas, 6.4
British Gas scores 6.4, third on the board. Its website scores 10, with solar from £5,610, an online heat pump estimate and online booking. Reviews score 8 from 4.4 on 359,930 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 15 of the latest 20, the best reply habit among the large suppliers here. Paid scores 10, with about 500 Google ads and at least 14 active Meta ads from its own page. Email scores 4 for a customer login. britishgas.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
Heatable, 6.3
Heatable scores 6.3, fourth on the board. Its website scores 10 for an instant fixed-price quote and from-prices on the homepage for boilers, solar, batteries, air-con and EV chargers. Reviews score 9 from 4.8 on 15,168 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 7 of the latest 20. It appeared in 2 of 10 UK searches, ‘air source heat pump cost UK’ and ‘solar panel installers London’, and an advice library adds a point, so SEO scores 5. Brand scores 6, with its founders named. Paid scores 10, with about 200 Google ads and 15 active Meta ads. Email scores 0.
Aira, 6.1
Aira scores 6.1, level fifth with EDF. Email and brand both score 6: an app for customers, a clear line (‘Taking Europe off gas. One home at a time.’) and its Group CEO named. Its website scores 6, because a home energy assessment comes before any price. Reviews score 6 from 4.3 on 1,945 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 7 of the latest 20. Paid scores 10, with about 500 Google ads and 22 active Meta ads. airahome.com appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
EDF, 6.1
EDF scores 6.1, level fifth with Aira. It replaced Effective Home on this board after effectivehome.co.uk failed to load on 22 and 23 October 2026. Paid scores 10, with about 2,000 Google ads and 27 active Meta ads. Reviews score 8 from 4.8 on 266,145 Trustpilot reviews, with no replies on the latest 20. Its website scores 7, with solar from £5,775 and batteries from £3,995 but a quote route rather than online ordering. Email scores 6 for its app and account. edfenergy.com appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
BOXT, 5.9
BOXT scores 5.9, level seventh with E.ON Next. Its website scores 10: a fixed price online in minutes, with installation from £1,699. Reviews score 8 from 4.7 on 65,729 Trustpilot reviews, held back by no replies on the latest 20. Paid scores 10, with about 300 Google ads and 51 active Meta ads. Email scores 0, with no sign-up seen, and boxt.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches, though a guides library adds a point.
E.ON Next, 5.9
E.ON Next scores 5.9, level seventh with BOXT. Its website scores 9 for solar from £4,995 with a buy-online route. Reviews score 8 from 4.5 on 241,605 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 2 of the latest 20. Email scores 6 for an app and account, and paid 10, with about 2,000 Google ads and 41 active Meta ads. Brand scores 2, as no clear positioning line was found. eonnext.com appeared in none of 10 UK searches and no advice library was credited.
Project Solar UK, 5.4
Project Solar UK scores 5.4, ninth on the board. Reviews score 8 from 4.6 on 7,706 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 13 of the latest 20. Social scores 6 for five platforms, and paid 10, with 66 Google ads and 48 active Meta ads. Its website scores 7: MCS and TrustMark are named and an EV charger add-on is priced at £699, but no solar price is shown and the route is a quote form. Email scores 0. It appeared in none of 10 UK searches, with a blog adding a point.
Smart Home Charge, 5.3
Smart Home Charge scores 5.3, the lowest of the ten, though no brand here scores below 5. Its website scores 9 for an online shop with charger prices and a basket. Reviews score 7 from 4.8 on 3,950 Trustpilot reviews, with no replies on the latest 20. Paid scores 6 on 88 Google ads, with no active Meta ads found. Email scores 2 for a mailing list. It appeared in none of 10 UK searches, with a guides library adding a point.
What the channels show
Search goes to one challenger
Eight of the ten brands appeared in none of 10 UK searches. Sunsave appeared in 5, including ‘how much do solar panels cost UK’ and the London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol installer searches. Heatable appeared in 2. Octopus Energy, British Gas, E.ON Next and EDF, four of the biggest names in UK energy, appeared in none. The rest of the results went to directories, comparison sites and price guides.
Everyone advertises
Nine of the ten score 10 on paid, with 50 or more Google ads and 10 or more active Meta ads each. BOXT ran 51 Meta ads, Project Solar UK 48 and E.ON Next 41. Smart Home Charge ran 88 Google ads but no Meta ads we could find, and scores 6. When every brand pays for attention, ads stop being the edge.
Prices are now normal
Nine brands show at least one price online. BOXT, Heatable, Octopus Energy and British Gas score 10 for a fixed quote, online ordering or online booking. Aira asks for a home assessment before any price, and Project Solar UK prices only an EV charger add-on, so both sit lower on website.
Huge review counts, few replies
Octopus Energy has 897,760 Trustpilot reviews, British Gas 359,930 and EDF 266,145. British Gas replies to 15 of its latest 20 and Sunsave to 14. Octopus Energy, EDF, BOXT and Smart Home Charge reply to none of their latest 20.
Key lessons for any renewable energy installer
Write the cost page for your area
Sunsave’s cost guide appeared for ‘how much do solar panels cost UK’ and its city pages for four city searches. A local installer can write the same pages for the towns it covers, with its own prices and MCS number.
Show a price before the survey
The six brands that show a fixed price or let you order or book online score 9 or 10 on website. A from price with what it includes answers the first question before a customer books a visit.
Reply to every review
British Gas replies to 15 of its latest 20 Trustpilot reviews and Sunsave to 14. Replying is the one review habit that costs nothing but time.
Keep the website up
Effective Home, on the first version of this board, holds 4.2 from 3,473 Trustpilot reviews, but its website did not load on 22 or 23 October 2026, so a customer checking it found nothing. Monitor your site and know who to call when it goes down.
Steal this playbook
Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.
- Reply to every review you have. British Gas replies to 15 of its latest 20 and Sunsave to 14; four brands here reply to none.
- Put a from price on your top three services. Nine of the ten brands show at least one price online.
- Build a page for each town you cover. Eight of ten brands appeared in none of 10 UK searches; Sunsave’s city pages took four of the five city searches.
- Collect an email at the quote stage. Three of the specialist installers capture no email on the homepage.
- Set up uptime monitoring. One installer dropped off this board because its site was down on both days we tried.

How we scored
Who is on the board. Ten UK brands a household is likely to meet when buying solar panels, a heat pump, a battery or an EV charger: BOXT (online installer of boilers, heat pumps and solar), Heatable (fixed-price installer of heating, cooling and renewables), Smart Home Charge (EV charger installer selling online), Project Solar UK (national solar installer), Octopus Energy (energy supplier selling solar, heat pumps and charger installs), British Gas (energy supplier selling solar, heat pumps and installs), E.ON Next (energy supplier selling solar), EDF (energy supplier selling solar, batteries and heat pumps), Aira (heat pump installer with its own app) and Sunsave (solar and battery installer on monthly plans). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength. Effective Home was on the first version of this top ten, but effectivehome.co.uk returned a Cloudflare 521 error on every attempt on 22 and 23 October 2026, so it was replaced with EDF, chosen by the same rule.
This board was first published with scores relative to the other brands on it. On 22 October 2026 it was rescored on Whito’s fixed anchors and expanded to ten brands, so scores are not comparable with the earlier edition.
When we looked. Nine brands were read on 22 October 2026, with the ten searches below run once on that date. EDF was read on 23 October 2026; because only the brands found in the 22 October results had been recorded, the ten searches were run again on 23 October 2026 to count EDF, and Sunsave and Heatable appeared in the same searches as before. Meta Ad Library counts for brands added on 22 October were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.
- Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
- Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
- Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, 4 for a customer account, 6 for an app, 7 for a newsletter plus an app, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
- SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API on 22 October 2026 (and again on 23 October 2026 for EDF) (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: solar panel installers near me UK; how much do solar panels cost UK; air source heat pump cost UK; heat pump installation; Boiler Upgrade Scheme installer; solar panel installers London; solar panel installers Manchester; solar panel installers Birmingham; solar panel installers Leeds; solar panel installers Bristol.
- Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads, counted by the brand’s own advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
- Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
- Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site. We award only what we could verify on the day.
These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.
Common questions
Which UK energy installer scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?
Sunsave scores highest at 7.1 out of 10, just ahead of Octopus Energy on 7.0, with British Gas on 6.4. Sunsave appeared in 5 of 10 UK searches, more than any other brand, holds 4.8 on Trustpilot with replies to 14 of its latest 20 reviews, and ran 21 active Meta ads.
Which energy installer scores lowest, and why?
Smart Home Charge scores 5.3. It runs an online shop with charger prices, but captures email only through a mailing list, replied to none of its latest 20 Trustpilot reviews, ran no Meta ads we could find and appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
Do these installers publish prices online?
Most do. Heatable shows solar from £4,995 and EV chargers from £995, British Gas shows solar from £5,610, EDF solar from £5,775, E.ON Next solar from £4,995, Octopus Energy charger installation from £949 and BOXT installation from £1,699. Aira asks for a home assessment before giving a price.
Why do the big energy suppliers not appear in search?
In our ten searches, Octopus Energy, British Gas, E.ON Next and EDF appeared in none. Results for installer and cost searches went mostly to directories, comparison sites, price guides, Sunsave and Heatable. Brand size did not translate into these results.
Why was Effective Home removed from this board?
Its website did not load on 22 or 23 October 2026, returning a Cloudflare 521 error, so four of its seven channels could not be read. We replaced it with EDF, a national energy supplier that sells solar and batteries, chosen by the same rule as the other brands.
