Fantastic Services scores highest of the ten UK tree surgery and arboriculture brands compared, at 6.3 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.

Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand, using publicly visible activity only: the first five on 12 October 2026 and the five added to make this a top ten on 22 October 2026, against the same fixed anchors and the same ten searches. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the tree work. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.

Most tree firms assume size wins work. A Royal Warrant, a national depot network or a council framework should do the selling. On public marketing evidence, it does not.

The two highest scores go to the brands that answer homeowners directly. Fantastic Services books tree surgery online and its tree pages appeared in 3 of 10 UK searches. GraftinGardeners, a single-city London firm, publishes its prices and appeared in 4 searches on 12 October. The national grounds contractors appeared in none.

idverde scores lowest at 2.6. It has a clear line and service pages, but no Google ads, no email sign-up and 2.3 from 12 Trustpilot reviews.

What can your business learn?

Who’s leading? Fantastic Services, with 6.3 out of 10 across seven channels.

Why are they leading? Its highest-scoring channels are Website (10/10) and Paid (8/10).

Where’s the opportunity? Email is the weakest channel on this board. The ten brands average 1.6 out of 10 on it, and 9 of them score 3 or less.

What can you copy? Three of the lessons further down this page:

  1. Publish a price range
  2. Answer the seasonal questions
  3. Collect reviews on one platform

Company verdicts

Fantastic Services, 6.3

Fantastic Services scores 6.3, the highest of the ten. Its website scores 10 for online booking across home and garden services, including tree surgery. Its tree pages appeared in 3 of 10 UK searches, ‘crown reduction tree surgery’, ‘tree surgeon London’ and ‘tree surgeon Bristol’, and its cost guides add a point, so SEO scores 7. Reviews score 7 from 4.6 on 54,137 Trustpilot reviews, the most here by far, with no replies on the latest 20. Social scores 6 for seven platforms, paid 8 on 44 Google ads and 10 Meta ads, and email 2 for a newsletter.

GraftinGardeners, 4.9

GraftinGardeners scores 4.9, second on the board and the highest of the specialist tree firms. It is the only tree specialist here that publishes prices: arborists at £45 to £90 an hour and a three-person team at £600 to £1,500 a day, with its company and VAT numbers shown, so its website scores 8. Its own pages appeared in 4 of 10 UK searches on 12 October, and a guides library adds a point, so SEO scores 7. Social and brand both score 6. Its gaps are reviews, 4.4 from 39 Trustpilot reviews with no replies on the latest 20, and email, with no sign-up beyond the quote form.

Arbtech, 4.3

Arbtech scores 4.3, third on the board. The tree and ecology survey firm has the clearest prices here: an instant quote route with surveys from £499, so its website scores 10. It appeared for ‘BS5837 tree survey company’ (SEO 4) and ran about 300 Google ads (paid 6). Reviews score 6 from 4.0 on 609 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 10 of the latest 20. Social and email both score 0, with no social links or sign-up found.

John O’Conner, 3.9

John O’Conner scores 3.9. The national grounds maintenance company links five social platforms (social 6), lists arboriculture among its services (website 6) and ran 12 Google ads (paid 6). Its Trustpilot profile has only 2 reviews, at 3.4, so reviews score 0. johnoconner.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches, with a blog adding a point.

Glendale, 3.7

Glendale scores 3.7. The national grounds contractor links four social platforms and lists its arboriculture services with a ‘Book a site survey’ page, so social and website both score 6, and it ran 10 Google ads (paid 6). Email scores 2 for a generic newsletter. Reviews score 0, from 2.5 on 12 Trustpilot reviews with no replies. glendale-services.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

Ground Control, 3.6

Ground Control scores 3.6. It ran 25 Google ads (paid 6) and lists arboriculture among its external maintenance services (website 6). Social scores 4 for two platforms and email 2 for a newsletter. Reviews score 0, from 2.0 on 10 Trustpilot reviews with no replies. ground-control.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches, with a blog adding a point.

Gristwood & Toms (Nurture Group), 3.4

Gristwood & Toms scores 3.4. It now sits on Nurture Group branding: the arboriculture pages, freephone and enquiry form are on nurture-group.co.uk, and its social links are Nurture accounts, so brand scores 2. Email scores 4 for an opt-in for seasonal updates on the enquiry form. No ads were found (paid 2), the group Trustpilot profile shows 2.6 from 5 reviews (reviews 2), and nurture-group.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

Bartlett Tree Experts, 3.3

Bartlett Tree Experts scores 3.3. Its global site links four social platforms (social 6) and has a clear line, ‘We’ve made your trees our business’, but the homepage shows a Stamford, Connecticut office and no UK office page was found, so website scores 4. It ran 6 Google ads in the UK (paid 4). Reviews score 1 from 3.7 on 8 Trustpilot reviews, and bartlett.com appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

Connick Tree Care, 3.1

Connick Tree Care scores 3.1. It ran 69 Google ads in 30 days (paid 6), has a page per service with regional contact pages (website 6) and names its team as ‘An Award Winning Employee Owned Arboricultural Company’ (brand 4). It links no social platforms (social 0), has only a client log-in for email (2), appeared in none of 10 UK searches, and has replied to none of its 15 Trustpilot reviews.

idverde, 2.6

idverde scores 2.6, the lowest of the ten. The national landscape and grounds group has service pages and a clear line, ‘Better Nature. Better Lives. Together.’, but no Google ads were found, no email sign-up was seen, and its Trustpilot profile shows 2.3 from 12 reviews with no replies. idverde.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

What the channels show

Answering homeowners wins search

Only three brands appeared in any of the 10 UK searches. GraftinGardeners appeared in 4 on 12 October, Fantastic Services in 3 on 22 October and Arbtech in 1, for ‘BS5837 tree survey company’. The other seven appeared in none. Lead platforms and directories took most results.

Prices are rare, and they work

GraftinGardeners publishes hourly and daily rates and Arbtech shows survey prices from £499. Fantastic Services takes bookings online. Those three score 8 or 10 on website. The other seven show no prices.

Reviews are thin

Apart from Fantastic Services, with 54,137 Trustpilot reviews across all its services, the largest profile here is Arbtech’s 609. Seven brands have 15 reviews or fewer. Arbtech replies to 10 of its latest 20, the best reply habit on the board.

Grounds contractors market to councils

Glendale, idverde, Ground Control and John O’Conner sell grounds maintenance with arboriculture as one service. Their sites speak to estates and councils, not homeowners, which is why they score low on reviews and search.

Key lessons for any tree surgery business

Publish a price range

GraftinGardeners shows hourly and daily rates and Arbtech shows survey prices. A range per job type answers the first question a homeowner asks.

Answer the seasonal questions

The brands that appeared in search did so with cost guides and service pages. One plain page on what a crown reduction costs in your area competes with directories.

Collect reviews on one platform

Seven brands here have 15 Trustpilot reviews or fewer. Ask every finished customer for a review on one platform and reply to each.

Name your arborists

Connick names its team and GraftinGardeners shows qualified staff. Names and qualifications reassure a customer about who will work at height in their garden.

Steal this playbook

Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.

  1. Publish price ranges per job. The three brands that show prices or book online score 8 or 10 on website.
  2. Write a cost page and a town page. Seven of the ten brands appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
  3. Ask every customer for a review. Seven brands have 15 Trustpilot reviews or fewer.
  4. Reply to every review. Arbtech replies to 10 of its latest 20; most others reply to none.
  5. Link your social accounts from your site. Connick and Arbtech link none and score 0 on social.

The evidence behind the scores

How we scored

Who is on the board. Ten UK tree-care brands a homeowner, estate manager or council is likely to meet: an international premium specialist (Bartlett Tree Experts), a national group-owned commercial arborist (Gristwood & Toms, part of Nurture Group), an employee-owned regional firm (Connick Tree Care), a London online-first domestic specialist (GraftinGardeners), a national grounds contractor with an arboriculture arm (Glendale), a national home services company that books tree surgery online (Fantastic Services), a national tree and ecology survey firm (Arbtech), and three national grounds maintenance companies with arboriculture services (John O’Conner, Ground Control and idverde). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength. No true national domestic tree surgery franchise could be verified, which is itself a finding.

When we looked. The board launched with five brands, read on 12 October 2026. Five more were added on 22 October 2026 to make a top ten, read against the same anchors below, with the same ten searches run again on that date. The first five were not re-read, so their figures are as of 12 October. Meta Ad Library counts for brands added on 22 October were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October. This applies to the five brands added on 22 October; the first five keep the Paid scores they were given on 12 October, which include Meta.

  • Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
  • Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
  • Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
  • SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API (12 October 2026 for the first five brands, 22 October 2026 for the five added) (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: tree surgeons near me UK; tree surgery cost UK; tree removal service UK; crown reduction tree surgery; BS5837 tree survey company; tree surgeon London; tree surgeon Manchester; tree surgeon Bristol; tree surgeon Birmingham; tree surgeon Leeds.
  • Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
  • Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
  • Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.

These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.

Common questions

Which tree surgery brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?

Fantastic Services scores highest of the ten, at 6.3 out of 10. It books tree surgery online and its tree pages appeared in 3 of 10 UK searches. GraftinGardeners is second on 4.9 and is the highest-scoring tree specialist, with published prices. The score measures public marketing evidence, not the quality of the tree work.

Which brand scores lowest, and why?

idverde scores 2.6. No Google ads or email sign-up were found, its Trustpilot profile shows 2.3 from 12 reviews with no replies, and it appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

How do tree surgery brands perform on reviews?

Reviews are thin. Apart from Fantastic Services, whose 54,137 Trustpilot reviews cover all its services, the largest profile is Arbtech’s 609 at 4.0. GraftinGardeners has 39 at 4.4, and seven brands have 15 or fewer.

What can a local tree surgeon copy from these brands?

Publish a price range per hour, per day and per team, as GraftinGardeners does. Write plain answers to cost and seasonal questions. Name your arborists and their qualifications. Link your social accounts from your website and reply to every review on one platform.

Why do big tree surgery firms rarely appear in local searches?

In our 10 UK searches, results were mostly lead platforms and directories. The larger grounds contractors sell to councils and estates, so their sites focus on contracts rather than costs and homeowner questions. The brands that answered cost and survey questions on their own sites were the ones that appeared.
