Finding
Local SEO runs the fastest clock in UK search: one London agency's published planning range is 2 to 3 months for first local movement and 3 to 6 months for map-pack visibility, against 6 to 12 months for national terms, according to Whitehat's published timeline, checked September 2026. Planning ranges, not measurements.

If you serve a town, not a country, your SEO clock runs faster than everything you have read about SEO timelines. This page covers what moves and when for UK local businesses, and what a Google Business Profile can and cannot speed up. It is part of our full UK timeline study.
The short answer
How long does local SEO take in the UK? We plan two to three months for first movement and three to six months for settled map-pack visibility, faster than any national timeline. The levers are a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name and address details, reviews, and a page per service per town. Planning ranges, not promises.
Why the local clock runs faster
The measured national picture is slow: only 1.74% of new pages reach Google’s top 10 within a year (Ahrefs, updated August 2026). But that dataset is US-weighted and national in scale. “Emergency plumber Wigan” is contested by perhaps a dozen real businesses, several of whom have websites a machine cannot read. In our July 2026 audit of 120 UK small business sites, plumbers averaged 21/100 and builders and roofers 10/100 for AI readability. Thin competition is speed you do not have to pay for.
Three surfaces, three clocks:
- The map pack. Driven by proximity, relevance and prominence. Profile changes register in weeks (planning range, not a measurement).
- Organic results for town terms. The normal ranking clocks apply, at the fast end of every range.
- AI answers. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode name local businesses today, and they disagree with each other while doing it. See our AI search timeline.
The local timeline, month by month
Planning ranges throughout, labelled once here rather than per line.
Weeks 0 to 4. Google Business Profile completed: correct primary category, services, hours, photos, a description that says the town. Name, address and phone made consistent everywhere they appear. A service page per trade per town on the site. This is the month that earns the most in all of local SEO.
Months 1 to 3. First map-pack appearances on lighter terms and nearby searches. Review count starts to matter: steady, real reviews beat a burst of ten in a week. Whitehat’s published planning range for first local improvement is 2 to 3 months, and ours agrees.
Months 3 to 6. Map-pack visibility settles on the terms that pay. Town-plus-service organic rankings reach page one or expose a content gap. Enquiries become attributable: “found you on Google” starts appearing in your call log.
Months 6 plus. Defence and extension: more towns, more services, more reviews. Local SEO done properly gets harder to displace with time, because reviews and history compound.
The Companies House point
Buyers check whether you are real, and increasingly so do machines. Put your registered name and company number on the site, matching your Companies House record. When we checked AI-recommended mortgage advisers against the public register, the answers were most accurate exactly where the register, trading name and profile agreed. Agreement between your public records is free speed; contradiction between them is free doubt.
Suspensions: the clock nobody budgets for
Google Business Profiles get suspended, sometimes on a change as ordinary as a new address. Google does not publish how long reinstatement review takes; the one hard number in its documentation is that once you open the evidence form for an appeal you must submit it within 60 minutes (Google Business Profile Help, checked September 2026). Plan a suspension as days to weeks of lost map-pack visibility (planning range, not a measurement), keep evidence of your registration and address ready in advance, and never buy a “guaranteed reinstatement” service priced on panic.
We will not cover tricks for gaming reinstatement, because they are the reason profiles get suspended.
The which-clock-moved test, local edition
Our pillar defines the which-clock-moved test. Locally the five clocks are: profile completeness, map-pack appearances, town-term rankings, calls and form fills, and AI mentions. A vendor invoice that says “local SEO: ongoing” should be answerable with which of those five moved this month, by how much, on what dates.
Method and limits
No new experiment behind this page. The measured figures are Ahrefs’ (August 2026, US-weighted, stated) and Google’s own documentation; the agency range is one named London agency’s published page; everything else is a labelled planning range. Local results depend on real competition in your actual town, your review base and your site, and no range on this page is a promise. Whito does not sell local SEO, or SEO of any kind.
FAQ
How long until I show in the map pack?
Planning range: first appearances in one to three months for lighter terms, three to six for settled visibility on terms that pay. A complete profile and consistent details are the prerequisites, not accelerators you add later.
Do reviews speed up local SEO?
Reviews compound over months and are hard for rivals to copy. A steady flow of real reviews beats bursts. Never buy reviews: it is illegal under UK consumer law and profiles get suspended for it.
My profile got suspended. How long to get back?
Google publishes no review timeframe. The one fixed number: the appeal evidence form must be submitted within 60 minutes of opening it. Prepare registration and address evidence before you appeal, and treat days to weeks as the planning range.
Does a new website reset my local progress?
Not if the profile, reviews and details persist and the site keeps its URLs or redirects them properly. The profile and review history carry most of the local signal.
Is local SEO faster than PPC for a trade business?
No. PPC is faster; local SEO is cheaper per enquiry once it settles, and it keeps working when you stop paying. Most trades that can afford both should run both for a quarter and compare cost per enquiry.
