“How long until ChatGPT recommends my business?” is the newest timeline question UK owners ask, and most answers are guesses sold at retainer prices. We track this with our own data and published studies, so this page can say what is measured, what is a planning range, and what nobody can promise. It is part of our full UK timeline study.
The short answer
How long does AI search visibility take in the UK? In our own logged data, citations moved within weeks of pages being published or improved. But being named, being cited and being clicked are three different events, engines disagree with each other, and nobody can promise inclusion. Measure the three separately and price them honestly.
Three events, three clocks
- Being named. An engine says your business name in an answer. Fast when it happens, never guaranteed, and unstable: the same question on the same day can name different firms on different engines.
- Being cited. An engine references your page as a source. This is the clock we can measure on our own site: Copilot and partners cited whito.co.uk 7,100 times in the window read on 21 July 2026 across 73 pages, and 17,400 times across 127 pages in the window read on 28 August. Roughly a doubling in five weeks, logged in full here.
- Being clicked. The event that pays. Same three months: 167 Bing clicks. 104 citations per click. Citations are not clicks, and we will keep saying so, because the gap is where owners get overcharged.
For comparison on the traditional surface in the same period: Google sent whito.co.uk 518,000 impressions and 1,410 clicks, a 0.3% click-through rate. Every surface underdelivers clicks relative to visibility. AI surfaces just do it at a steeper ratio.
What moves the clock, on the evidence
What got cited on our site was not clever. It was pages with real prices, named numbers and stated dates: cost research and tool reviews took all ten of our top ten cited slots, and no opinion post appeared. The write-things-machines-can-quote lesson generalises, and it is compatible with everything the ordinary SEO clock already wants from you.
Readability is the entry ticket. In our July 2026 audit of 120 UK small business sites, sector AI-readability scores ran from cafes at 63/100 down to builders and roofers at 10/100. A site a machine cannot parse cannot be cited, whatever the retainer says.
Engines disagree, and check nothing
Do not assume being named means being vetted. When we re-checked 197 business names from earlier collections against Companies House, 16 matched only dissolved or liquidated companies; we then re-asked the same engines the same questions and 7 of the 16 dissolved names came back, 5 of them named first (15 September 2026). In our mortgage adviser study, answers were most accurate exactly where the trading name, register entry and business profile agreed. The practical move for any UK business takes five minutes: put your live registered name and company number on your site, matching Companies House. Agreement between your public records is the closest thing to speed this surface sells.
The honest timeline
Planning ranges except where a source is named:
- Weeks 0 to 4: make the site readable (structured data, visible facts, plain HTML answers, llms.txt) and the records consistent. This is doable in days and is the only part fully in your control.
- Weeks 2 to 8: crawling engines can begin citing improved pages. Our own citation counts doubled in five weeks (measured, our site, our window; your mileage is a planning range).
- Months 2 to 6: being named in answers for your town and trade, sometimes, on some engines. Unstable by construction; measure monthly with the same questions, and log the answers.
- Ongoing: fragile. Engines re-answer daily, models change, and no position is owed to you. Treat AI visibility as a surface you monitor, not an asset you own.
Do not overclaim the payoff. Citations built our brand’s presence at the moment of answer, and they did not become pipeline by themselves. Anyone pricing “AI visibility” as if citations were traffic is selling you the 17,400 and hoping you never ask about the 167.
Run the which-clock-moved test on any AI-visibility report: named, cited and clicked are different clocks, and screenshots of one chatbot on one day move none of them.
Method and limits
The citation and click figures are Whito’s own, from Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report (beta) and Search Performance for the identical window, read 29 August 2026, and Google Search Console for the parallel Google figures; the doubling compares two reads five weeks apart, on our site only. One website is not a study of the market. The dissolved-companies and mortgage-adviser findings are Whito’s published studies with method and limits on their own pages. Engine behaviour changes without notice; ranges here are planning ranges except where a measurement is named. Nobody can pay us to appear in, or stay out of, any of it.
FAQ
How long until ChatGPT names my business?
No honest answer exists, because inclusion is not owed and engines disagree with each other. Make the site readable and the records consistent, then test monthly with the same questions and log what changes.
Do AI citations bring customers?
Not directly, on our data: 17,400 citations alongside 167 clicks in the same three months. Citations put your name at the moment of answer. Count them, value them honestly, and never pay traffic prices for them.
What is the fastest thing I can do this week?
Match your website to your Companies House record: registered name, company number, live status, plus a readable page stating what you do and where. Our register studies found AI answers most accurate where public records agree.
Can an agency guarantee AI visibility?
No. Nobody controls what engines answer. An honest vendor improves readability and evidence on your site and measures being named, cited and clicked separately. A guarantee is the tell that they are selling the unmeasurable.
Which engines matter for UK businesses?
ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Copilot for citation volume in our own logs. They disagree often, which is itself the finding: check all of them with the same question before believing any of them.
