MyBuilder scores highest of the ten UK painting and decorating brands compared, at 6.9 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.

Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand, using publicly visible activity only: the first five on 12 October 2026 and the five added to make this a top ten on 22 October 2026, against the same fixed anchors and the same ten searches. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the work. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.

There is no household-name decorator in the UK. The largest painting firms work for housing providers and public bodies, so homeowners meet decorating through marketplaces and multi-trade services. This board compares both.

The firms built for homeowners lead. MyBuilder scores 6.9 and Airtasker UK 6.4, both helped by price and cost pages that win search. Fantastic Services follows on 6.0, then Aspect and Pimlico Plumbers level on 5.7. The four painting contractors and networks score between 3.1 and 3.9.

Bagnalls and Dulux Select Decorators share the lowest score, 3.1. Neither has a Trustpilot profile, collects email or ran ads we could find in October 2026.

What can your business learn?

Who’s leading? MyBuilder, with 6.9 out of 10 across seven channels.

Why are they leading? Its highest-scoring channels are Paid (10/10) and SEO (9/10).

Where’s the opportunity? Email is the weakest channel on this board. The ten brands average 2.6 out of 10 on it, and 5 of them score 3 or less.

What can you copy? Three of the lessons further down this page:

  1. Publish a price for a room
  2. Build a page for each town you cover
  3. Reply to every review

What the channels show

Homeowner brands lead, contractors trail

The six brands that serve homeowners directly, Airtasker UK, MyBuilder, Aspect, Fantastic Services, Pimlico Plumbers and Rated People, score between 5.4 and 6.9. The four painting contractors and networks, Novus, Bell Group, Bagnalls and Dulux Select Decorators, score between 3.1 and 3.9. The contractors work mainly for housing providers and public bodies, so they do not chase consumer channels. That leaves the homeowner market open to a well run local decorator.

Price pages win the searches

MyBuilder appeared in 5 of 10 UK searches and Airtasker UK in 4, through price guides and town pages. Fantastic Services’ painting cost guide and Aspect’s London decorating page appeared once each. The six other brands appeared in none. Airtasker shows painting ranges from £140 to £400 for painters; none of the four contractors publishes a price.

Reviews split three ways

MyBuilder has the most Trustpilot reviews, 56,634 at 4.3, and Fantastic Services 54,137 at 4.6. Pimlico Plumbers replies to 19 of its latest 20, Novus to 18 and Rated People to 11, while Fantastic Services replies to none. Bagnalls and Dulux Select Decorators have no Trustpilot profile.

Booking online is rare

Aspect and Fantastic Services take bookings online and score 10 on website. Airtasker UK scores 9 for published price ranges and free task posting. The marketplaces MyBuilder and Rated People take a job post and send quotes, and the contractors take enquiries.

Key lessons for any painting and decorating business

Publish a price for a room

The cost pages from Airtasker, MyBuilder and Fantastic Services are what appeared in the price searches. A price range for a bedroom, a hallway and an exterior front tells a homeowner whether to call.

Build a page for each town you cover

MyBuilder appeared for Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Bristol through its town pages. A local decorator with a page for each town, with photos of real jobs, competes in the same results.

Reply to every review

Pimlico Plumbers replies to 19 of its latest 20 and scores 8 on reviews. Fantastic Services, with a higher rating, replies to none.

Show the guarantee and the people

Dulux Select Decorators explains its assessment and guarantee, and Pimlico names its staff. Say who will be in the house and what happens if something goes wrong.

Steal this playbook

Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.

  1. Publish a price range for common rooms. Price pages took most of the search appearances by brands on this board.
  2. Write one page per town you cover. Six of the ten brands appeared in none of our ten searches.
  3. Reply to every review. Pimlico Plumbers replies to 19 of its latest 20.
  4. Offer online booking or a quick quote form. The two brands that book online score 10 on website.
  5. Collect an email at every quote. Four of the ten capture no email at all.

How we scored

Who is on the board. True national consumer painting brands are scarce in the UK (no consumer franchise with a public UK network could be verified), so this board uses the largest multi-region firms, networks and the services homeowners use to find a decorator, chosen for reach not marketing strength: two national contractors with branch networks (Bagnalls, 17 branches; Bell Group, 37 branches; both mainly B2B and social housing), a national property maintenance and refurbishment contractor (Novus Property Solutions), a manufacturer-run approved decorator network (Dulux Select Decorators, AkzoNobel), three marketplaces with painting pages (Airtasker UK, MyBuilder and Rated People), and three multi-trade home services firms that book decorators (Pimlico Plumbers, part of Neighbourly; Aspect; Fantastic Services). Brands were chosen for relevance and size, not for marketing strength.

When we looked. The board launched with five brands, read on 12 October 2026. Five more were added on 22 October 2026 to make a top ten, read against the same anchors below, with the same ten searches run again on that date. The first five were not re-read, so their figures are as of 12 October. Meta Ad Library counts for brands added on 22 October were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.

  • Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
  • Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
  • Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
  • SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API (12 October 2026 for the first five brands, 22 October 2026 for the five added; not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: painters and decorators near me; painting and decorating prices UK; commercial painting contractors UK; exterior house painting cost UK; painter decorator London; painters and decorators Manchester; painters and decorators Leeds; painters and decorators Glasgow; painters and decorators Bristol; approved decorator guarantee UK.
  • Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
  • Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
  • Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.

These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other, allowing for the ten days between the two reading dates. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.

Common questions

Which painting and decorating brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?

MyBuilder scores highest at 6.9 out of 10, ahead of Airtasker UK on 6.4. MyBuilder appeared in 5 of 10 UK searches with painting and decorating price guides, holds 4.3 from 56,634 Trustpilot reviews and ran about 3,000 Google ads and 40 Meta ads. The score measures visible marketing, not the quality of any decorator’s work.

Which brands score lowest, and why?

Bagnalls and Dulux Select Decorators share the lowest score, 3.1. Neither has a Trustpilot profile, collects email or ran ads we could find, and neither appeared in any of 10 UK searches. Both have clear positioning lines and named people.

How do these brands compare on reviews?

MyBuilder has the most Trustpilot reviews, 56,634 at 4.3, followed by Fantastic Services on 54,137 at 4.6. Pimlico Plumbers replies to 19 of its latest 20, Bell Group to 19 and Novus to 18. Bagnalls and Dulux Select Decorators have no Trustpilot profile.

What can a local decorator copy from these brands?

Publish a price range for common rooms, as Airtasker does. Build a page for each town you cover, as MyBuilder does. Reply to every review, as Pimlico Plumbers does. Explain your guarantee and name who will do the work.

Why are marketplaces on a decorators leaderboard?

There is no household-name national decorator, so homeowners often find one through a marketplace or a multi-trade service. Airtasker UK and MyBuilder took 9 of the 11 search appearances by brands on this board, across both reading dates, which is where a local decorator competes for attention.
