Travelodge scores highest of the ten UK hotel and guest house brands compared, at 6.4 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand, using publicly visible activity only: the first five on 12 October 2026 and the five added to make this a top ten on 22 October 2026, against the same fixed anchors and the same ten searches. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the stay. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
Most small hotel owners assume the chains win because they outspend everyone on ads. On this board, every brand takes bookings online and nine of the ten run Google ads, so neither separates them. What separates them is the unglamorous work.
No brand on the board holds a Trustpilot rating above 3.5, and none of the nine with a profile replied to any of its latest 20 reviews. Across 10 UK searches, only one top-ten result belonged to any of the ten brand websites, and it was Travelodge’s.
Greene King Inns scores lowest at 3.1. It shows a £50 stay offer and takes bookings online, but ran no Google or Meta ads, has 17 Trustpilot reviews and appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

What the channels show
Booking engines are table stakes
All ten brands take bookings online, so website scores sit between 9 and 10. Premier Inn (‘from £25 a night’), Leonardo Hotels (London from £76) and Greene King Inns (a stay from £50) show a price on the homepage and score 10. The other seven ask for dates before showing a rate.
Reviews are the shared weakness
Every brand with a Trustpilot profile holds 3.5 or lower. Britannia Hotels holds 1.7 from 673 and Best Western GB 1.9 from 1,027. None of the nine with a profile replied to any of its latest 20 reviews. Innkeeper’s Collection has no profile under its new name.
Loyalty schemes carry email
Six of the ten score 8 on email, through members’ clubs and rewards schemes: Village Rewards, Société du Vin, Club Mal, Best Western Rewards, Grand Rewards and Leonardo’s 10% loyalty discount. Greene King Inns and Innkeeper’s Collection rely on a newsletter.
Search belongs to the aggregators
Across ten UK hotel searches, only Travelodge’s own site appeared, once. The rest went to booking sites, travel guides and newspaper round-ups. For a small hotel, the listing on those sites and its own Google profile matter more than out-ranking them.
Key lessons for any hotel or guest house
Reply to every review
None of the nine brands with a Trustpilot profile replied to any of its latest 20 reviews. A small hotel that answers every review on Google, Tripadvisor and Trustpilot stands out against all of them.
Show a price before the dates
Premier Inn, Leonardo Hotels and Greene King Inns show a starting price on the homepage. A ‘from’ rate answers the first question before a guest decides whether to search.
Give guests a reason to book direct
Leonardo offers 10% off every online booking to loyalty members, and Innkeeper’s Collection a lowest-price-direct guarantee. A direct-booking perk is how a small hotel keeps the commission it would pay an aggregator.
Link your social profiles
Innkeeper’s Collection links none from its homepage. Guests check a hotel’s Instagram before they book; make it easy to find.
Steal this playbook
Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.
- Reply to every review. None of the nine brands with a Trustpilot profile replied to any of its latest 20.
- Put a ‘from’ price on your homepage. The three brands that do all score 10 on website.
- Offer a book-direct perk. A discount or extra for direct bookings gives guests a reason to skip the aggregator.
- Collect emails with a members’ list. Six of the ten score 8 on email through a loyalty scheme.
- Keep your booking-site listings complete. Aggregators took almost every result in our ten searches.

How we scored
Who is on the board. Ten UK hotel brands a leisure or small-business traveller is likely to meet, spanning different models: the two national budget chains (Premier Inn, owned by Whitbread; Travelodge), a regional mid-market hotel-and-gym brand (Village Hotels, Blackstone-owned since 2024), two boutique groups (Hotel du Vin, 19 hotels; Malmaison), two inn and pub-with-rooms collections (Innkeeper’s Collection, 55 hotels next to pubs; Greene King Inns), a European hotel group with UK hotels (Leonardo Hotels), a hotel brand made up of independent hotels (Best Western GB) and a national leisure hotel group (Britannia Hotels). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength.
When we looked. The board launched with five brands, read on 12 October 2026. Five more were added on 22 October 2026 to make a top ten, read against the same anchors below, with the same ten searches run again on that date. The first five were not re-read, so their figures are as of 12 October. Meta Ad Library counts for brands added on 22 October were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.
- Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
- Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
- Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
- SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API (12 October 2026 for the first five brands, 22 October 2026 for the five added; not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: budget hotels UK; boutique hotels UK; hotels with gym and pool UK; pub with rooms UK; cheap hotel rooms UK business travel; hotels Manchester city centre; hotels Birmingham; hotels Leeds; hotels Brighton; hotels Glasgow.
- Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
- Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
- Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.
These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other, allowing for the ten days between the two reading dates. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.
Common questions
Which hotel brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?
Travelodge scores highest at 6.4 out of 10, just ahead of Premier Inn on 6.3. It was the only brand on the board whose own site appeared in any of our 10 UK searches, it ran about 8,000+ Google ads and 14 Meta ads, but it holds 2.0 from 5,446 Trustpilot reviews with no replies on the latest 20.
Which hotel brand scores lowest, and why?
Greene King Inns scores 3.1. It takes bookings online with a priced offer, but links three social platforms, captures email only through a sign-up link, ran no Google or Meta ads, has 17 Trustpilot reviews at 3.4 and appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
How do these hotel brands compare on reviews?
Every brand with a Trustpilot profile holds 3.5 or lower, from 1.7 for Britannia Hotels to 3.5 for Hotel du Vin. Premier Inn has the most reviews, 8,480. None of the nine with a profile replied to any of its latest 20 reviews.
What can a small hotel or guest house copy from these brands?
