Occupancy problems and marketing problems look identical from the office and need opposite fixes. This is the sorting exercise.

Whito puts every piece of advice into one of three stages. Start is clarity and the basics. Build is systems, consistency and conversion. Scale is leverage and multiple sites. Skipping a stage does not work.

Start: can a family see into the place?

You are at Start if any of these is true.

  • Your CQC profile has no website on it.
  • Your rating appears on your site without the date it was awarded.
  • There is no fee information anywhere, in any form.
  • The registered manager is not named on the website.
  • The photographs are of the building and the garden, and not of a normal day.
  • Your trading name, address or phone number differs between CQC, your site and Google.

All six are free to fix and none takes longer than an afternoon. The gate out of Start is that a relative who has never heard of you can, without ringing, work out what you offer, what it is likely to cost, who runs it and what the regulator last said.

Build: does the enquiry get handled the same way every time?

Care enquiries are unusual in one specific way: they arrive at the worst moment of somebody’s year, and the family is ringing three or four providers the same afternoon. Response time is not a nice-to-have, it is most of the conversion.

  • Is there a written response to a first enquiry, and does it go out the same day?
  • Does someone answer the phone out of hours, and does the website say who?
  • Is there a standard visit process, and is a visit offered in the first call?
  • Do you record enquiries, visits and admissions separately?
  • Do you ask every family for a review after the first month?

Recording those three numbers separately is the point. A provider that counts only admissions cannot tell whether it has an enquiry problem, a visit problem or a closing problem, and those need three different remedies.

The gate out of Build is that you can state, from records, how many enquiries became visits and how many visits became admissions, over the last quarter.

Scale: what actually changes with a second site

Two things change, and neither is the marketing budget.

First, the register. Each location registers separately and each carries its own rating, its own profile and its own gap. A group with eight homes has eight CQC profiles to keep accurate, and in our reading of the register file the incomplete ones are not evenly distributed. Groups are as likely as independents to have blanks.

Second, and this is the one groups underrate: from 23 September 2026 the vets sector will be required to disclose group ownership on signage and online, following the CMA’s market investigation. Care is not covered by that order, but the direction of travel is public and consistent, and families increasingly ask who owns a home. A group that answers plainly, on the page, is better placed than one that leaves it to be discovered.

The practical Scale work is a page per home with local specifics, one consistent brand promise across them, central enquiry handling with local phone answering, and a single review process.

Common questions

Is paid advertising worth it for a care home?

Rarely before Start and Build are done, because the enquiry arrives at a website that cannot answer the family’s six questions. After that, the honest comparison is against a directory listing: enhanced at £990 a year plus VAT, platinum at £1,980, both published on 8 September 2026, against the free basic tier and a free CQC profile field that half the sector has not filled in.

How is home care different from residential?

The buying window is shorter, the decision is more often reversible, and price is quoted by the hour against a published national minimum. Everything about Start is the same. Build leans harder on response time, because a home care enquiry is frequently a same-week need.

Should a group brand centrally or locally?

Locally on the page, centrally on the promise. Families search for a town. What the group buys them is consistency, and consistency is only visible if each home’s page carries the same commitments in the same words.
