On 4 November 2026, 16 of 46 heating firms on the first page of Google for “boiler installation” in eight UK cities published their own price for a new boiler on their website. The other 30 asked people to call, fill in a form or book a survey before giving any figure.

A new boiler is one of the biggest jobs a heating firm does. It is also the job where a homeowner is most likely to compare three or four firms before calling anyone. We wanted to know how many firms let that homeowner see a starting price.

Key findings

  • 16 of 46 firms (35%) showed their own price for a supplied and fitted boiler. Two more showed only a general “typically costs” range for any installer, which we did not count.
  • The lowest published prices ran from £1,050 to £2,499. The middle figure was £1,970. Most were “from” prices for a standard combi swap.
  • Only 7 of the 16 said whether the price included VAT.
  • 14 of 46 sold an annual servicing or boiler cover plan. Where a price was shown, the cheapest plan each firm offered ran from £6.99 to £28.05 a month.
  • 3 of 46 had an online tool that showed a price on screen. More firms had “instant quote” buttons, but most led to a contact form.

What this means if you run a heating business

Most of your competitors on page one hide the price. That is an opening. A homeowner who sees “from £1,950, fitted, VAT included” on your site already knows you are in their range before they pick up the phone.

You do not have to publish every job. A clear starting price for a standard combi swap, with what it includes and whether VAT is in it, does the work.

Then sell the service plan at the same time. The firms in this check that sold plans turned a one-off install into a monthly payment and a reason for the customer to call them first next time.

How we did it

  • Sample: the organic results on the first page of Google UK for “boiler installation” plus the city name, in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast and Norwich, read on 4 November 2026. Adverts, the map pack, directories (such as Checkatrade, TrustATrader, Yell and MyBuilder), manufacturer installer finders and forums were removed. One parts retailer was also removed. That left 46 heating firms, including one national online installer.
  • Checks: each firm’s own website, including its boiler or installation page. A price counted only if it was the firm’s own £ figure for a supplied and fitted boiler. A general “boilers typically cost” range did not count. Every price was re-read in a browser on the same day.
  • Limits: page one of Google is not every heating firm in a city. Results change by location and day. A “from” price is a starting point, not a quote. We record what each site says, not what a firm would charge for a given home.
