Bill Plant scores highest of the ten UK driving schools compared, at 7.3 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.

Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand on 22 October 2026, using publicly visible activity only, against fixed anchors and the same ten UK searches. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the tuition. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.

Many instructors assume the national schools win on advertising. On this board, search is what separates the leader. Bill Plant’s own pages appeared in 7 of 10 UK searches, more than any other school, while four of the ten appeared in none.

Bill Plant scores 7.3, ahead of AA Driving School on 6.4 and driveJohnson’s on 6.1. Every school here lets you book or buy online, so the website scores sit between 9 and 10 and do little to separate them. Reviews, search and email do the separating.

GoRoadie and Intensive Lessons share the lowest score, 4.9. GoRoadie ran no ads in either library and holds 1.7 from 34 Trustpilot reviews. Intensive Lessons shows course prices and appeared in 1 of 10 UK searches, but captures no email and ran no Meta ads that we found.

What can your business learn?

Who’s leading? Bill Plant, with 7.3 out of 10 across seven channels.

Why are they leading? Its highest-scoring channels are SEO (10/10) and Paid (10/10).

  2. Show the price before the checkout

Company verdicts

Bill Plant, 7.3

Bill Plant scores 7.3, the highest of the ten. SEO scores 10: 7 of 10 UK web searches returned billplant.co.uk in the top ten; it also has a blog of learner guides. Paid scores 10: Google Ads Transparency Centre, UK, last 30 days, by domain billplant.co.uk: about 400 ads. Meta Ad Library, UK, active ads from Bill Plant pages, read 23 October 2026: 18 (6 from Bill Plant Driving School and 12 from local Bill Plant instructor pages). Email scores 4: an account on its Prepare to Pass learning platform; no newsletter seen. Brand scores 4: same name everywhere and a clear positioning line (‘the UK’s 5x National Driving School of the Year’); no named people beyond a first name, no long-running asset and no three recent news mentions found.

AA Driving School, 6.4

AA Driving School scores 6.4. Website scores 10: ‘Get lesson prices’ by pickup location, an instant priced quote, with online booking. Paid scores 10: Google Ads Transparency Centre, UK, last 30 days, by domain theaa.com: about 2,000 (the whole AA domain, not only the driving school) ads. Meta Ad Library, UK, active ads from The AA Driving School page, read 23 October 2026: 81 among the first 83 results loaded. Social scores 0: no social media links found on the driving school pages, so there are no driving school profiles to compare. SEO scores 5: 2 of 10 UK web searches returned theaa.com in the top ten, plus credit for driving advice pages.

driveJohnson’s, 6.1

driveJohnson’s scores 6.1. Website scores 9: a Prices and Offers page and an online basket; prices appear only after entering a postcode. Paid scores 8: Google Ads Transparency Centre, UK, last 30 days, by domain drivejohnsons.co.uk: about 500 ads. Meta Ad Library, UK, active ads from the driveJohnsons page, read 23 October 2026: 5. Email scores 0: only a callback form; no newsletter, account or app seen. Social scores 6: links to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, four platforms in all. The site says it was founded in 2005 and has 800 instructors.

My Four Wheels, 6.0

My Four Wheels scores 6.0, level with RED Driving School. Website scores 10: prices shown (a 2-hour intro lesson £66, 4 hours £132) with online booking. Paid scores 8: Google Ads Transparency Centre, UK, last 30 days, by domain myfourwheels.co.uk: about 2,000 ads. Meta Ad Library, UK, active ads from the My Four Wheels page, read 23 October 2026: 3. Social scores 4: links to Facebook and Instagram, two platforms in all. Email scores 4: a customer login (run on the Totaldrive platform); no newsletter or app seen.

RED Driving School, 6.0

RED Driving School scores 6.0, level with My Four Wheels. Paid scores 10: Google Ads Transparency Centre, UK, last 30 days, by domain reddrivingschool.com: 63 ads. Meta Ad Library, UK, active ads from RED Driving School’s official pages, read 23 October 2026: 32 among the first 38 results loaded. Website scores 9: online booking and payment through a booking portal (book.redtraining.com); no lesson prices on the homepage. SEO scores 3: 0 of 10 UK web searches returned reddrivingschool.com in the top ten, plus credit for motoring advice pages. Reviews score 4: Trustpilot shows 18,814 reviews but no rating: the profile carries a notice that the rating is unavailable because of a breach of its guidelines, with fake reviews removed, so the rating part scores 0; no company reply on the latest 20. The Trustpilot warning is the clearest gap: a learner checking reviews sees the notice before any star rating.

SmartLearner, 5.6

SmartLearner scores 5.6. Website scores 10: packages bought online with prices shown (lessons from £36, an offer at £43.05 including fees), then a phone call to arrange lessons. Reviews score 9: Trustpilot 4.9 from 2,028 reviews, with a company reply on 19 of the latest 20. SEO scores 2: 0 of 10 UK web searches returned smartlearner.com in the top ten. Email scores 4: a customer sign-in; the only email field seen is the enquiry form, and no newsletter or app. It describes itself as an independent driving school founded in Coventry, established since 2004.

PassMeFast, 5.3

PassMeFast scores 5.3. Website scores 10: course prices shown, an initial payment of £375 and online booking. SEO scores 7: 4 of 10 UK web searches returned passmefast.co.uk in the top ten, plus credit for a resources and guides library. Email scores 0: no email sign-up, newsletter, account or app seen on the homepage. Social scores 4: links to Facebook, X and Instagram, three platforms in all.

LDC, 5.0

LDC scores 5.0. Website scores 9: course pages (one week, semi-intensive and others) with a basket and a how-to-book page; no prices on the homepage. Paid scores 8: Google Ads Transparency Centre, UK, last 30 days, by domain learnerdriving.com: 9 ads. Meta Ad Library, UK, active ads from LDC pages, read 23 October 2026: 12 (8 from LDC Driving Instructor Training Centre, 1 from LDC Learner Driving Centre and 3 from LDC instructor pages). Reviews score 1: Trustpilot 2.7 from 12 reviews, with a company reply on 1 of the latest 12. SEO scores 3: 0 of 10 UK web searches returned learnerdriving.com in the top ten, plus credit for theory and Highway Code guides.

GoRoadie, 4.9

GoRoadie scores 4.9, level with Intensive Lessons. Website scores 9: lessons booked online through the site and app; no learner price on the homepage. Social scores 6: links to Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and YouTube, five platforms in all. Paid scores 2: Google Ads Transparency Centre, UK, last 30 days, by domain goroadie.com: no ads found. Meta Ad Library, UK, read 23 October 2026: no active ads from a GoRoadie page found. Reviews score 2: Trustpilot 1.7 from 34 reviews, with a company reply on 1 of the latest 20.

Social scores 4: links to Facebook, Instagram and X, three platforms in all.

What the channels show

Search is won by town pages

Bill Plant appeared in 7 of 10 UK searches, including all five town searches from London to Bristol. PassMeFast and driveJohnson’s appeared in 4 each, mostly for town searches, and the AA in 2. RED, LDC, GoRoadie and SmartLearner appeared in none. BSM, which we do not score separately because it is a trading name of the AA, appeared in 6. The searches for ‘driving lessons near me UK’ and ‘book driving lessons online’ returned no driving school at all.

Booking online is now the norm

All ten schools let a learner book or buy online. Five show a price before you commit, PassMeFast, the AA, My Four Wheels, Intensive Lessons and SmartLearner, and score 10 on website. The other five score 9 because the lesson price only appears after a postcode, a basket or a later step.

Reviews split on reply habit and trust

SmartLearner replies to 19 of its latest 20 Trustpilot reviews and holds 4.9 from 2,028, the best reviews score here. Bill Plant replies to 13. RED has 18,814 reviews, but Trustpilot shows no rating for it and a notice that fake reviews were removed, so it scores 4. GoRoadie (1.7 from 34) and LDC (2.7 from 12) score lowest.

Conversion pressure now has a legal edge

In April 2026 the CMA fined Automobile Association Developments Limited, which trades as both the AA Driving School and BSM, £4.2m over a hidden £3 booking fee, its first financial penalty under its new consumer powers. The AA now shows lesson prices by pickup location before you book. If your checkout adds costs at the last step, that is a regulatory risk as well as a lost booking.

Key lessons for any driving school

Build a page for each town you teach in

Bill Plant’s lead comes from search, and its search comes from town pages: it appeared for London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol. A local school can own its own town the same way, with prices, test centres and instructor names on the page.

Show the price before the checkout

Five schools show a price before you commit and score 10 on website. After the CMA fine over a hidden £3 fee, a full price list with no surprises is basic protection as well as good marketing.

Reply to every review

SmartLearner answers 19 of its latest 20 Trustpilot reviews and scores 9 on reviews from just over 2,000 reviews. RED has nine times as many reviews and scores 4. Replying costs nothing but time.

Collect emails

PassMeFast, driveJohnson’s and Intensive Lessons capture no email at all. Learning to drive takes months, from theory to test, and an account, an app or a short newsletter keeps a learner with you while they decide.

Never let prepayments become your working capital

NxtGen Driving Academy collapsed in November 2025 owing over £380,000, including customer prepayments. Pay as you learn, or small blocks, is also a trust message, so say it plainly on your site.

Steal this playbook

Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.

  1. Reply to every review you have. SmartLearner replies to 19 of its latest 20 and scores 9 on reviews.
  2. Put your full price list on your site. The five schools that show a price before you commit all score 10 on website.
  3. Build a page for each town you cover. Bill Plant appeared in all five town searches and leads the board on search.
  4. Add an account, app or email sign-up. Three of the ten capture no email at all.
  5. Cap prepayments and say so. NxtGen’s collapse took learners’ prepaid lessons with it.

How we scored

Who is on the board. Ten UK driving schools a learner is likely to meet when booking lessons: RED Driving School (national driving school with a theory app), PassMeFast (intensive and semi-intensive course provider using independent instructors), AA Driving School (the AA’s national driving school), Bill Plant (national driving school franchise), My Four Wheels (national driving school and instructor trainer), driveJohnson’s (national driving school founded in 2005), LDC (accelerated course specialist), GoRoadie (online platform for booking local instructors), Intensive Lessons (intensive course provider) and SmartLearner (independent driving school founded in Coventry). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength. BSM is left out because it is a trading name of the AA, so including it would score one marketing operation twice.

This board was first published with scores relative to the other brands on it. On 22 October 2026 it was rescored on Whito’s fixed anchors and expanded to ten brands, so scores are not comparable with the earlier edition.

When we looked. All ten brands were read on 22 October 2026, with the ten searches below run once on that date. Meta Ad Library counts were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.

  • Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
  • Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
  • Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
  • SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API (22 October 2026; not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: driving lessons near me UK; driving lessons cost UK; intensive driving course cost; book driving lessons online; automatic driving lessons; driving lessons London; driving lessons Manchester; driving lessons Birmingham; driving lessons Leeds; driving lessons Bristol.
  • Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
  • Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
  • Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.

These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.

Common questions

Which driving school scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?

Bill Plant scores highest at 7.3 out of 10, ahead of AA Driving School on 6.4 and driveJohnson’s on 6.1. Bill Plant’s pages appeared in 7 of 10 UK searches, it sells learning packages online and it holds 4.6 from 9,594 Trustpilot reviews with replies to 13 of the latest 20.

Which driving school scores lowest, and why?

GoRoadie and Intensive Lessons share the lowest score, 4.9. GoRoadie ran no Google or Meta ads that we found and holds 1.7 from 34 Trustpilot reviews, although it books lessons online and has an app. Intensive Lessons shows course prices from £225 but captures no email, ran no Meta ads that we found and appeared in 1 of 10 UK searches.

Is BSM still going?

Yes, as a trading name of the AA. In April 2026 the CMA fined Automobile Association Developments Limited, the company behind both brands, £4.2m over a hidden £3 booking fee. We do not score BSM separately, but bsm.co.uk appeared in 6 of our 10 UK searches.

Which UK driving school has the best reviews?

SmartLearner has the best reviews score, 9, from 4.9 on 2,028 Trustpilot reviews with replies to 19 of the latest 20. The AA shows 4.8 from 262,568, but that profile covers the whole AA, not only the driving school. Trustpilot shows no rating for RED and a notice that fake reviews were removed.

Is it safe to pay for driving lessons upfront?

Be careful. NxtGen Driving Academy collapsed in November 2025 owing over £380,000, including customer prepayments. Pay by credit card for anything over £100 so you have Section 75 protection, and be wary of large upfront blocks however good the discount looks.

Corrections and right of replyThe scores here are Whito’s editorial assessment, based on information anyone can see. Every board uses the same fixed scoring rules, and the scores measure visible marketing, not sales or profit. Where we quote a financial figure, published results or regulator action, it comes from filed accounts, a company announcement or the regulator’s own notice.

If your business is named here and you think we have a fact wrong, email hello@whito.co.uk and we will check it and correct it. If you want to respond, send us a statement and we will publish it alongside. Full detail: Corrections, right of reply and removals.

Whito
Whito is an independent UK research publisher. We publish research on how UK businesses are found, trusted and priced: what they cost to market, how their sectors work, and who actually gets recommended. Studies are free to read, every figure carries the date it was checked, and nobody pays to appear.
