Opinion.

The question this answers: did AI search actually take your customers, or did it take traffic that was never going to buy? Based on Whito UK data and Similarweb clickstream data, 2026.

AI search did not take your customers. It took your informational traffic, which is the traffic that was never going to book anything.

Our own site is the clearest example we have. Between April and July 2026, Whito was cited 7,100 times across 73 pages by Microsoft Copilot, while earning 56 clicks from Bing web search over the same period. That is 127 citations for every click. The visibility did not disappear. It stopped arriving as a session.

Most UK small businesses being sold an AI visibility package in 2026 have not checked whether their enquiry count moved at all.

Has AI search actually taken your customers?

Almost certainly not, if you run a local service business.

Google AI Mode accounts for 0.34 percent of all Google searches, according to Similarweb clickstream data covering January to April 2026. AI Overviews appear on more than 20 percent of queries. Those are two very different numbers and they get quoted interchangeably by people selling recovery packages.

Zero-click searches reached 68 percent of all Google searches in June 2026, on the same Similarweb panel. That is up from around 45 percent a decade ago, so more than half of the shift happened before generative AI existed.

Someone searching what an EICR involves was never going to ring you. Someone searching emergency electrician Leeds still does.

What do the numbers actually say?

Read the last two rows again. Referral traffic from ChatGPT converts better than Google organic, at 7 percent against 5 percent, with visitors spending 15 minutes on site against 8 and viewing 12 pages against 9.

Fewer people arrive. The ones who do arrive are further along.

Why did your traffic fall but your enquiries hold?

Because the two numbers were never measuring the same thing.

Organic traffic to a plumbing site is a mix of two audiences. There are people with a problem and a postcode, and there are people reading about how long a boiler lasts. AI answers the second group without sending them anywhere. It has barely touched the first.

Whito research published in June 2026 found the organic click rate falls from 15 percent to 8 percent when Google shows an AI summary. That is a real loss, and it lands almost entirely on questions rather than on intent to buy.

If your sessions halved and your enquiries did not, nothing was taken from you that you were converting.

Who is actually being hurt by AI search?

Publishers, not local service businesses.

Sites with 1,000 to 10,000 daily views lost around 60 percent of their search referrals, according to Chartbeat data reported in March 2026. Those businesses sold attention. Attention was the product, so losing the click is losing the sale.

A roofer does not sell attention. A roofer sells roofs. The click was only ever the delivery mechanism.

There is one genuine exception. If your entire visibility rests on ranking for informational questions rather than for the job someone wants doing, you are in the publisher category without realising it. That is a structure problem, and it predates AI.

What should you check before paying for AI visibility?

The five minute check

  1. Count enquiries, not sessions. Calls, forms, direct messages, walk-ins. Compare the last six months with the same six months last year.
  2. If enquiries held and sessions fell, you lost informational traffic. Do nothing expensive.
  3. If enquiries fell too, work out which pages used to produce them and check whether those pages still rank.
  4. Check whether AI crawlers can reach your site at all. Blocked crawlers and JavaScript-only pages are the most common reason a business is invisible to AI, and it has nothing to do with size.
  5. Only then consider paying anyone for AI visibility work.

Our position is straightforward. Anyone selling you an AI recovery package without first asking what happened to your enquiries is selling a treatment before the diagnosis.

The sharp takeaway

Traffic is not a business metric. It never was. It became one because it was easy to measure and it went up on its own for fifteen years.

Check your enquiries. If they held, you did not lose customers to AI. You lost a vanity number, and you should stop paying to get it back.

Common questions

Has AI search reduced traffic for UK small businesses?

Yes, but mostly informational traffic. Whito research published in June 2026 found UK organic traffic growth fell by 86 percent, from 26.3 percent to 3.7 percent, and that the organic click rate drops from 15 percent to 8 percent when Google shows an AI summary. Local service businesses with buying-intent pages have generally seen enquiries hold while sessions fell.

What percentage of Google searches end without a click in 2026?

68 percent of all Google searches ended without a click in June 2026, according to Similarweb clickstream data. That is up from around 45 percent a decade ago, so most of the shift happened before generative AI arrived.

Is Google AI Mode replacing normal search?

Not yet. AI Mode accounted for 0.34 percent of all Google searches between January and April 2026 on Similarweb data. AI Overviews are far more common, appearing on more than 20 percent of queries.

Does traffic from ChatGPT convert better than Google traffic?

On Similarweb Gen AI Landscape data from September 2025, ChatGPT referrals to transactional sites converted at 7 percent against Google organic at 5 percent, with 15 minutes on site against 8 and 12 pages per session against 9. Fewer visitors, further along.

Should a UK small business pay for AI visibility services?

Only after checking the enquiry count. If enquiries held while sessions fell, the traffic lost was never converting. Check that AI crawlers can reach the site first, since blocked crawlers and JavaScript-only rendering are the most common reason a business is invisible to AI.
