An independent garage can run effective marketing for £200-600 a month. The average lead costs £28.50 and roughly one in seven becomes a paying customer.
That works out at around £195 to win a customer who returns a 5.6 to 1 payback on their first visit alone, before a single MOT reminder goes out. Most garages have never done this sum, which is why most garages still rely on hoping.
Here is what garage marketing actually costs in 2026, from our UK automotive marketing cost research.
What garages actually spend
| Workshop size | Monthly budget |
|---|---|
| Single bay | £150-410 |
| Multi bay (3-6 bays) | £730-1,760 |
| Large workshop or specialist (6+ bays) | £1,690-3,980 |
What each channel actually costs
| Channel | DIY cost | Outsourced cost | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | £0 | £100-300 one-off | Do first |
| Review collection | £0 | n/a | Do first |
| MOT reminder system | n/a | £20-80/mo | Do first |
| Online booking | n/a | part of website | Do first |
| Website | n/a | £1,500-4,000 build | Build phase |

| Local SEO | £0 | £300-1,200/mo | Build phase |
| Local citations | £0 | £150-400 one-off | Build phase |

What a customer actually costs to win
| Search term | Cost per click |
|---|---|
| Clutch replacement [city] | £3-8 |
| [Car brand] specialist [city] | £3-8 |
| Brake repair [city] | £3-7 |
| Car service [city] | £2-6 |
| MOT near me | £2-5 |
| Mechanic near me | £2-5 |
| Car diagnostic [city] | £2-5 |
| Tyre fitting near me | £1-4 |
Average cost per lead across the sector is £28.50. Conversion is 14.67 percent, so roughly one lead in seven pays. Return on the first visit is 5.6 to 1, and that ignores everything the customer spends over the next three to five years.
Booking platforms sit alongside. WhoCanFixMyCar charges £5-20 per lead. BookMyGarage charges £5-15 per booking. AutoTrader garage listings run £50-200 a month. All fine as supplements. None of them owns the customer for you.
The two things most garages get wrong
The first is online booking. Around 40 percent of customers prefer to book online, and most of them are trying to do it outside your working hours. A phone number on a website is a closed door at 9pm on a Sunday.
The second is seasonality. MOT demand peaks in March and September, because that is when cars were first registered. Increase your budget four to six weeks before those peaks, not during them.
Where to start if you have nothing to spend
The £0 starting plan
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Every service, MOT status, brands you specialise in, real photos of the workshop.
- Ask for a Google review at collection, every time. Garages with 100 or more reviews and a 4.5 rating dominate local search.
- Switch on MOT reminders if your management software already has them.
- Add your prices for MOT and standard servicing to your own website.
- Reply to every review, particularly the ones disputing a bill.
Reviews are the single largest lever in this trade and the one most garages never ask for.
What to stop paying for
- Cheap MOT loss leaders with no follow up. A £20 MOT only works if you have a system for the work it uncovers.
- Ads with no online booking behind them. You are paying to send people to a closed door.
- Flat spend across the year. March and September are worth more. Spend accordingly.
- Platform leads you have never costed. £10 a lead at a one in ten close rate is £100 a customer. Know the number.
- Sponsorship instead of search. A shirt sponsorship feels local. Search is where people actually look for a mechanic.
The bottom line
Garage marketing is unusually easy to measure. You know what a service is worth, you know how many leads it takes, and the payback lands on the first visit.
Get reviews and online booking working, load your budget before the MOT peaks, and stop discounting the thing that brings people through the door.
