Finding
PPC can produce its first UK leads inside a month, most ads are reviewed within one working day, while SEO's measured base rate is that only 1.74% of new pages reach Google's top 10 within a year, according to Google Ads Help and Ahrefs, checked September 2026.

This is a decision page, not a debate page. The two channels answer different questions on different clocks, and which one you need depends on one thing: do you need leads this month, or leads this year at a falling cost? It is part of our full UK timeline study.
The short answer
SEO vs PPC on speed: PPC produces judgeable lead flow in two to six weeks; SEO takes three to six months on local terms and six to twelve nationally, then compounds while PPC never does. If the business needs leads this month, that is a PPC question. If it needs a falling cost per lead, that is SEO.
The decision in one table
| You need | Buy | Clock | What it costs to find out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leads this month | PPC | Ads within a working day of review; calibrated verdict in 2 to 6 weeks (Google Ads Help, checked Sep 2026) | Planning maths: £600 a month at UK CPCs of £1.50 to £2.50 buys 240 to 400 clicks, roughly 7 to 12 enquiries at a 3% conversion rate, ex VAT, not a quote |
| Leads this year, cheaper each quarter | SEO | 3 to 6 months local, 6 to 12 national (planning ranges anchored to Ahrefs and Whitehat, per our pillar) | £300 a month at the floor of our logged UK range for 6 months is £1,800 before the traffic clock catches up |
| Proof your offer converts at all | PPC first | Weeks | The cheapest honest test of a landing page that exists |
| An asset a competitor cannot switch off | SEO | Years: 72.9% of top-10 pages are over 3 years old (Ahrefs, Aug 2026) | Time, mostly |
Why “both, staggered” wins for most UK businesses
The channels are not rivals; they are the same shop’s till and freehold. The sequence that respects both clocks:
- Week 1: fix the landing pages and tracking. Both channels pay through the same pages, and neither can outrun a page that does not convert. The free Visibility Check reads yours the way a machine does.
- Weeks 1 to 6: PPC answers the conversion question with money. Search terms from the account become your SEO target list, bought data instead of guessed data.
- Months 1 to 12: SEO builds against the terms PPC proved. As organic rankings arrive, spend retreats from those terms and holds the ones organic cannot reach.
- Month 12: compare cost per enquiry across both, on your own logged numbers, and rebalance. This is arithmetic, not philosophy.
The trap is running the sequence backwards: buying a year of SEO to discover in month nine that the offer never converted. PPC would have told you that in February for £600.
The clocks that decide it
- PPC’s clock is conversion volume. Google’s bidding calibrates after around 50 conversion events or 3 conversion cycles (Google Ads Help, checked September 2026). At 15 conversions a month, calibration is a quarter, not a fortnight. Full PPC timeline.
- SEO’s clock is competition. A named town moves in months; a national head term is defended by pages averaging five years old at #1 (Ahrefs). Full SEO timeline.
- Neither clock forgives a broken page. Same landing page, same tracking, same arithmetic underneath both.
Whichever you run, apply the which-clock-moved test to every report: impressions, rankings, clicks, enquiries and AI citations are five different clocks, and a channel is only working when the enquiries clock moves.
The money view, in GBP
Planning maths, ex VAT, not a quote, using our published cost research. Six months of PPC at £600 a month is £3,600 and produces leads from week two, at a flat cost per lead forever. Six months of SEO at £300 to £1,250 a month is £1,800 to £7,500 and may produce little before month four, then a lead flow whose marginal cost falls every quarter the pages hold. Twelve-month view: PPC £7,200 and linear; SEO £3,600 to £15,000 and compounding, if, and only if, the targeting was right. That “if” is what the PPC-first sequence de-risks. Full price ranges: SEO costs, Google Ads costs, what UK enquiries cost by sector.
Method and limits
No new experiment behind this page. Documented figures are Google’s and Ahrefs’, dated inline; cost figures are Whito’s published UK research; conversion rates in the worked examples are illustrative and labelled planning maths. The sequencing advice assumes a business with a working offer and a readable website; if either is missing, fix that before buying any clicks from anyone. Whito sells neither SEO nor PPC and takes nothing from any agency.
FAQ
Which gets leads faster, SEO or PPC?
PPC, without argument: judgeable lead flow in two to six weeks against months for SEO. The real question is what happens after: PPC’s cost per lead stays flat forever; SEO’s falls as rankings compound.
Can I do SEO instead of PPC to save money?
You can, if you can wait: months before leads, and the measured odds are against new pages on competitive terms. Cheaper this quarter usually means PPC’s absence, not SEO’s success.
Should a new business start with SEO or PPC?
PPC first, small, to prove the offer converts, while SEO foundations go in behind it. A year of SEO on an unproven offer is the most expensive way to discover a landing-page problem.
When do I switch budget from PPC to SEO?
Term by term, as organic rankings arrive: when a page holds the top 10 for a term, retreat spend from that term and hold it where organic cannot reach. Month 12 is the natural full rebalance, on your own cost-per-enquiry numbers.
Does running PPC help SEO rankings?
Not directly; Google has said paid spend does not buy rankings, and our data gives no reason to doubt it. Indirectly, yes: PPC buys you the search-term data and conversion evidence that make SEO targeting honest.
