Dental marketing is expensive per click and cheap per patient. Most practices only ever look at the first half of that sentence.
An implant click costs £15. That sounds absurd until you price the patient behind it. Then it starts to look like the best value line in the practice.
Here is what dental marketing actually costs in 2026, from our UK dentist marketing cost research.
What practices actually spend
| Practice size | Monthly budget | Share of revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Sole dentist | £500-1,500 | See patient mix below |
| Small practice (2-3 dentists) | £1,500-4,000 | See patient mix below |
| Multi-site group | £4,000-15,000 | See patient mix below |
Patient mix changes the answer more than practice size does. Private-focused practices spend 5 to 10 percent of revenue. Mixed practices spend 3 to 5 percent. NHS-heavy practices spend 1 to 3 percent, because the list fills itself.
If you are moving from NHS towards private, your marketing budget has to move first. It is not a reward for the transition. It is the thing that causes it.
What each channel actually costs
| Channel | DIY cost | Outsourced cost | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | £0 | £100-300 one-off | Do first |
| Google review system | £0 | £50-150/mo software | Do first |
| Email and SMS recall | n/a | £100-300/mo | Do first |
| Website | n/a | £3,000-6,000 basic, £6,000-12,000 advanced | Build phase |
| Google Ads | £500-3,000/mo | plus management | Build phase |
| SEO | £0 | £800-3,000/mo | Build phase |
| Social media | £0 | £300-1,000/mo | Build phase |
| Before and after photography | n/a | £500-1,500 per session | Scale phase |
| Patient video testimonials | n/a | £300-800 per video | Scale phase |
The highest return item on that table costs almost nothing. A systematic Google review process outperforms every paid channel in the practice, and most practices still ask for reviews by accident rather than by process.
What a patient actually costs
| Search term | Average cost per click |
|---|---|
| Dental implants | £15.00 |
| Emergency dentist | £11.50 |
| Invisalign | £9.00 |
| Dentist near me | £6.00 |
| Teeth whitening | £4.50 |
| NHS dentist | £3.50 |
Now the number that matters. Cost per acquired patient runs £80-200 through emergency ads, £100-300 through cosmetic ads, £30-80 through organic search and £20-60 through organic social.
Patient lifetime value runs £2,000-5,000 for a general patient and £2,500-5,000 for cosmetic. So a £100 patient acquisition against a £3,000 lifetime value is a thirty times return. A healthy practice sees 10x to 25x. Below 5x, something is broken.
Our research also modelled spend against outcome. £500-1,000 a month buys 60-150 clicks and 3-8 new patients. £1,000-3,000 buys 150-500 clicks and 8-25 new patients. £3,000-7,000 buys 400-1,000 clicks and 20-50 new patients.
Where to start if you have nothing to spend
The £0 starting plan
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Every treatment, correct hours, real photos of the practice.
- Ask every happy patient for a Google review at reception, on the day.
- Turn on recall reminders. The cheapest new patient is the one already on your list.
- Answer every review, including the difficult ones, in a human voice.
- Add call tracking before you spend a penny on ads.
Sixty percent or more of dental searches happen on mobile. If your site is slow on a phone, the ad budget is irrelevant.
What to stop paying for
- Print directories and newspaper ads. These deliver almost no measurable patient flow in 2026.
- Google Ads with no call tracking. If you cannot say which keyword produced which call, you are guessing with real money.
- Agencies that report impressions. Impressions, clicks and rankings are not patients. Ask for cost per new patient or change agency.
- Cosmetic ads pointed at your homepage. An implant search deserves an implant page. Anything else wastes the most expensive clicks you buy.
- Marketing without checking the GDC advertising rules. Compliance is not optional, and getting it wrong is more expensive than any campaign.
The bottom line
Dentistry has one of the strongest returns in UK small business marketing, because a single patient is worth thousands and a click costs pounds.
Track cost per new patient, not cost per click. Get reviews on a system, not on a whim. Then spend as much as the maths supports.
