Website Legal Details Checker

Does your website show the legal details UK law asks for?

Paste your web address. We read your homepage and your contact, privacy, terms and about pages, look for your company number, and check it against the Companies House register. Free, no email, about twenty seconds.

An automated self-check, not legal advice. Use it on your own website, or one you have a genuine reason to check. Results are shown only to you. Whito does not publish them or keep a copy. By running a check you agree to the limits and terms below.

What the law asks a UK website to show

A limited company or LLP must show its registered name, its registered number, the part of the UK it is registered in and its registered office address on its website. The rules are in regulation 25 of the 2015 trading disclosures regulations, with regulation 24 adding the name. Sole traders and partnerships trading under a business name must show the owner’s or each partner’s name and an address where legal documents can be served.

When Whito read 250 UK trade and dental websites in October 2026, 46 of the 113 that present themselves as a limited company showed no company number on the homepage or their contact, privacy or terms pages. Read the study, or the plain guide to what to put in your footer.

What this checker looks at

  • Company number shown, on any of the pages we read
  • Whether the name on the Companies House record for that number appears on your site, and the company’s status
  • A line saying which part of the UK you are registered in
  • Registered office wording
  • A VAT number in the usual format, if one is shown
  • A link to a privacy notice from your homepage

Limits and terms of use

It can miss things. The checker reads the words on up to five public pages: your homepage, and your contact, privacy, terms and about pages if the homepage links to them. It cannot read details shown only in images, PDFs or content that loads by script, and it can miss a number written in an unusual way. It checks that registered office wording is there, not that the address matches the register. A VAT number is checked for format only, not against HMRC.

“Not found” means we did not find it. It does not mean the detail is missing from the site, and it is not a finding that a business has broken the law. If a result looks wrong, check the site yourself.

It is not legal advice. It is a quick self-check against the main disclosure rules for websites. It does not cover every rule that may apply to your business, such as consumer, data protection or sector rules. For anything that matters, read the regulations or ask a solicitor or accountant.

Checking other people’s websites. Use it on your own website, or on one you have a genuine reason to check, such as a business you are about to hire. Do not run it at scale or by script, and do not present a result as proof that a business is breaking the law. Whito does not publish results, keep them, or say anything about the businesses checked.

Companies House details. The company name and status come from the public register on the day you check. As Companies House itself says, it “does not check the accuracy of the information filed”. Whito is not connected to Companies House or HMRC.

How we read a site. The checker visits public pages only, never anything behind a login, and identifies itself as WhitoLegalCheck. If you run a website and do not want it read, email hello@whito.co.uk.

Your data. We use the address you enter only to show you the result, and we do not keep it or the result. To stop the tool being overloaded, we count checks from each connection for one hour using a hashed form of your IP address. Details are in our privacy policy.

No guarantee. The checker is free and provided as it is, without any promise that it is complete or accurate. To the fullest extent the law allows, Whito Ltd is not liable for any loss that comes from relying on a result. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer. Our terms and conditions also apply.
