How Whito checks home care providers

Three checks before a provider is listed. First, an active registration for domiciliary care with the Care Quality Commission, England’s regulator of health and social care, with the provider’s CQC record linked from its listing. Second, the organisation behind the service is checked against the Companies House register. Third, a provider can claim its listing free to confirm its details and become Verified. Verified means we have checked this business against the official Companies House register and its CQC registration, and the business has confirmed its details. It confirms the business is real and registered. It is not a review of its work. A CQC rating is the regulator’s judgement, not Whito’s recommendation: check it on the provider’s CQC page, linked from every listing.

How does Whito check home care providers?

Every listed provider holds an active CQC registration for domiciliary care and is backed by an organisation checked against the Companies House register. Each listing links the provider’s CQC record so you can read the regulator’s current rating and inspection reports at source.

What does a CQC rating mean?

The Care Quality Commission inspects providers and rates them Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement or Inadequate. A rating is the regulator’s judgement on the date of inspection, not Whito’s recommendation. Whito does not display ratings: check them on the provider’s CQC record, linked from every listing.

Read the provider’s latest CQC report, ask for a written care plan and a clear breakdown of hourly rates and visit lengths, ask how carers are recruited and DBS checked, and ask for the complaints procedure. The CQC publishes its own guidance on choosing care services at cqc.org.uk.

The research behind these pages

We analysed the whole CQC care directory, all 57,082 registered services in England, and found the register holds no website for 27,551 of them. Home care is at 48.8%. We then checked ten of the blanks by hand and found working websites for several, so a blank field is missing data rather than a fact about the business.
