Google held its Marketing Live event last week and buried inside the announcements was a line that should change how you think about your website.

Most searches in Google’s AI Mode now finish inside Google. The person gets their answer from the AI summary and never visits a website at all. AI Mode has just passed 1 billion monthly users.

For years the whole game was getting the click. Rank, get found, win the visit. That model is quietly breaking, and most small business owners are about to react to it in exactly the wrong way.

The number that matters

AI Mode has 1 billion monthly users, and the majority of sessions are resolved inside Google with no visit to a website.

What actually happened

At Marketing Live 2026, Google confirmed that ads now appear inside AI-generated answers, not just above the old blue links. New formats let a brand answer a question directly inside the AI response, show a product explainer written by Gemini, or run a chat agent inside the ad itself.

The headline most people took away was “new ad formats.” The real story is the sentence underneath it. The majority of AI Mode sessions are fully resolved inside Google, with no visit to an external site.

So the question is no longer only “how do I get the click.” It is “what does Google say about me when nobody clicks at all.”

Why it matters for you

If your plan was to rank for a few terms, pull people to your site, and convert them there, that plan now has a leak in it.

When Google answers on your behalf, you are being summarised whether you like it or not. The information Google pulls from comes from your site, your product feed, your reviews, and the way you describe what you do. If that material is thin or confusing, the summary will be thin or confusing too. This is the same shift behind the rise in AI adoption across UK businesses.

This is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to fix foundations. The businesses that win in AI search are not the ones buying the newest ad format. They are the ones Google can understand clearly enough to recommend.

The mistake most businesses will make

The mistake is treating this as an advertising problem. People will rush to test Conversational Discovery Ads and AI Shopping Ads before they have sorted out the basics that feed those systems.

That is chasing tactics before structure. If Google cannot work out what you sell, who it is for, and why anyone should trust you, no ad format will save you. You will just pay to confuse people faster. The same trap shows up when owners overspend before the basics are right, which is what our study of 128 published UK marketing prices kept turning up.

What to do about it

Work in order. Foundations first, then channels, then leverage.

Start: Make yourself understandable

Write your core pages so a stranger could explain your business back to you in one sentence. State plainly what you sell, who it is for, where you operate, and what it costs. Google can only summarise what you have made clear.

Build: Feed the machine real signals

Google said feed health and site content are front-line performance levers. In plain terms, keep your product information accurate, your reviews genuine, and your service pages specific. Show real expertise, not keyword padding. This is the work that decides how you get described when nobody clicks.

Scale: Test the new formats once the base is solid

Only when your foundations are clear should you experiment with AI Mode ads and tools like Ask Advisor. At that point you are amplifying something that already works, not papering over something that does not.

The Takeaway

The click is not dead, but it is no longer the whole job. When most searches end inside Google, your task is to be the answer, not just to win the visit. That is won on foundations, not on the latest ad format. Make your business easy to understand, feed Google honest signals, and test the new tools last. Structure before scale, as always.
