For a painter, the Google Business Profile is the highest-return free asset there is. In Whito’s August 2026 citation study, Google reviews or Business Profiles were cited in 81% of the AI Mode answers we logged, second only to the business’s own website at 90%. Here is how to run one properly, and the mistakes that get profiles suspended.

Set it up like a checkable business

Use your real trading name, exactly as it appears on your invoices and your Companies House record. Category: Painter, plus secondary categories that match real services. List services individually, interior painting, exterior painting, wallpapering, spraying, because each one is a phrase customers search for. Fill the areas you cover honestly. Add your website, and make sure the name, address and number on the profile match the site to the letter.

Photos are the engine

Ten dated before-and-after pairs, captioned in plain English with the job and the area, then one or two new pairs a week. Few trades produce work this photogenic, and a profile with fresh, labelled work signals a live business to both Google and the customer scrolling at 9pm.

Reviews that say something

Ask on invoice day, by text, with the direct link. Ask for the job and the area in the review. Never buy, swap or incentivise reviews: since April 2025 fake and concealed incentivised reviews are a banned practice in the UK with fines up to 10% of global turnover, per the rules we summarised, and reply to every review, including the rough ones, in a sentence or two of plain English.

The suspension trap

Google updated its review policy twice in 2026 and on 27 April ran an algorithmic wave that hit thousands of service-area business profiles in one morning, per Whito’s July 2026 research. The predictable triggers: keywords stuffed into the business name, a home address shown as a shopfront, and sudden bursts of reviews. “D Smith Decorators” with steady weekly reviews survives waves like that. “Best Cheap Painter Decorator Leeds” does not.

Do not pay anyone to do this

Every task above takes minutes and repeats weekly. Agencies sell GBP optimisation retainers at £100 to £300 a month for what is, for a painter, an invoice-day habit and a weekly photo upload. Spend the money on paint.

Common questions

Is a Google Business Profile free for a painter?

Yes. Creating and running a Business Profile is free, and in Whito’s August 2026 study Google reviews or profiles were cited in 81% of AI Mode answers about local businesses. That makes it the highest value free channel a painter has.

Why do painter Google profiles get suspended?

The common triggers are keywords added to the business name, a home address presented as a premises, and unnatural review bursts. Google ran an algorithmic suspension wave in April 2026 that hit thousands of service-area profiles in one morning.

How should a painter ask for Google reviews?

By text on invoice day with the direct review link, asking the customer to mention the job and the area. Never incentivise or buy reviews: fake and concealed incentivised reviews have been banned in the UK since April 2025 with severe fines.
