Feel Good Contacts scores highest of the ten UK optician and eyewear brands compared, at 7.1 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.

Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand on 22 October 2026, using publicly visible activity only, against fixed anchors and ten UK searches. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the eye care. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.

Many opticians assume the chains win on size. On this board an online contact lens retailer outscores every high street name, because it captures email, answers search questions and holds 4.7 from 70,405 reviews.

Feel Good Contacts scores 7.1, ahead of Specsavers on 6.9 and Glasses Direct on 6.6. Specsavers is the strongest in search, appearing in 3 of 10 UK searches, including ‘opticians Manchester’ and ‘opticians Birmingham’.

Cubitts scores lowest at 3.7. Its homepage links only Instagram, its Trustpilot profile has no reviews and cubitts.com appeared in none of 10 UK searches. Reviews are otherwise this sector’s strength: seven of the ten score 8 or 9 on the review formula.

Boots Opticians, 6.1

Boots Opticians scores 6.1, level fourth with Vision Express. Its website scores 10 for online booking and frame prices on the homepage. Reviews score 8 from 4.2 on 235,000 reviews, but these sit on the parent Boots Trustpilot profile, which Trustpilot uses for the Boots Opticians address; it replied to 15 of the latest 20. Optical Express, 5.9

Optical Express scores 5.9, sixth on the board. Reviews score 9 from 4.6 on 20,016 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 16 of the latest 20, the best reply habit on the board. Its website scores 10, pricing laser eye surgery from £549 per eye and booking free consultations online. Paid scores 10 with about 400 Google ads and 47 Meta ads. Two channels hold it back: email scores 0, with consultation forms but no sign-up, and SEO 2, as opticalexpress.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

Scrivens, 5.7

Scrivens scores 5.7. Reviews score 9 from 4.7 on 2,488 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 10 of the latest 20. SEO scores 5: scrivens.com appeared for ‘book eye test online UK’ through its FAQ, and a blog adds a point. Its website scores 6, the lowest here: ‘Book appointment’ leads to a branch finder, with no prices shown and online booking not confirmed from the homepage. Paid scores 10 with 72 Google ads and 13 Meta ads. Brand scores 2 for a consistent name only.

Cubitts, 3.7

Cubitts scores 3.7, the lowest of the ten. Its website scores 10, with frames at £175 and an online checkout, and brand 4 for a clear line, ‘The Modern Spectacle Maker’. Social scores 2 for Instagram only. Reviews score 0 because its Trustpilot profile has no reviews. Email scores 2 for a newsletter sign-up. Paid scores 6 with about 200 Google ads and no Meta ads found, and cubitts.com appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

What the channels show

Reviews are this sector’s strength

Seven of the ten score 8 or 9 on reviews. Leightons and Bayfields both hold 4.9, and Vision Express has 356,400 Trustpilot reviews at 4.6. The difference is the reply habit: Optical Express answers 16 of its latest 20, Leightons 12 and Scrivens 10, while Specsavers and Bayfields answer none of theirs.

Search goes to whoever answers the question

Specsavers appeared in 3 of 10 UK searches with its own town pages and a delivery help page. Feel Good Contacts appeared twice, once with a blog post on what skipping an eye test costs. Six of the ten appeared in none. Directories and the professional bodies held most local results.

Online booking is standard

Nine of the ten book appointments or sell online, and score 10 for website. Scrivens is the exception, sending ‘Book appointment’ to a branch finder. Prices are common too: nine of the ten show a price on the homepage or the first page clicked.

Email capture is thin

Only Feel Good Contacts pairs an app with a rewards scheme. Optical Express and Bayfields show no sign-up at all, and four others offer only a login or a rewards plan. For a service people need every two years, a recall list is the cheapest repeat booking there is.

Key lessons for any local optician

Reply to every review

Optical Express replies to 16 of its latest 20 Trustpilot reviews. A reply in your own words, especially to a complaint, shows the next patient how you look after people.

Build your recall list

Feel Good Contacts earns the top email score for its app and rewards. A single practice can do the same job with a sign-up at the eye test and a reminder when the next one is due.

Answer the questions patients search

Feel Good Contacts ranks for ‘eye test cost UK’ with a plain blog post. A page answering what an eye test costs at your practice, and what the NHS covers, is the page most local opticians are missing.

Own your town page

Specsavers appeared for Manchester and Birmingham with a page for each town. A page for your town, with your address, opening hours and booking link, is how a single practice competes there.

Pick one line and keep it

Specsavers has used the same line since 2002. You do not need a famous one, you need a consistent one, on your window, your website and your Google profile.

Steal this playbook

Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.

  1. Reply to your latest 20 reviews. Optical Express answers 16 of its latest 20; Specsavers and Bayfields answer none.
  2. Collect an email at every eye test. Feel Good Contacts scores 8 on email; Optical Express and Bayfields score 0.
  3. Publish a page on what an eye test costs. Feel Good Contacts appeared for ‘eye test cost UK’ with exactly that.
  4. Write one page per town you serve. Six of the ten brands appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
  5. Put a price on your homepage. Nine of the ten show one; Scrivens shows none and scores lowest on website.

How we scored

Who is on the board. Ten UK optician and eyewear brands a patient is likely to meet when booking an eye test or buying glasses or lenses: Specsavers (the largest UK optician chain), Vision Express (national optician chain), Boots Opticians (optician chain within Boots stores and standalone practices), Optical Express (laser eye surgery and optical group), Cubitts (London spectacle maker with its own stores), Scrivens (family-owned optician and hearing chain), Leightons (optician and hearing group founded in 1928), Glasses Direct (online glasses retailer), Feel Good Contacts (online contact lens and eyewear retailer) and Bayfields (Leeds-based optician and audiology group). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength.

When we looked. All ten brands were read on 22 October 2026, against the fixed anchors below, with the ten searches run on the same day. This board was first published with scores relative to the other brands on it. On 22 October 2026 it was rescored on Whito’s fixed anchors and expanded to ten brands, so scores are not comparable with the earlier edition.

  • Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
  • Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking, an online checkout or an instant priced quote.
  • Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, 4 for a customer account, 6 for an app or a loyalty scheme, 7 for a newsletter plus an app or loyalty scheme, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
  • SEO: ten UK searches for this sector, run through a standard web search API on 22 October 2026 (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: opticians near me open now UK; eye test cost UK; how much are glasses UK; book eye test online UK; contact lenses delivery UK; opticians London; opticians Manchester; opticians Birmingham; opticians Leeds; opticians Bristol.
  • Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Meta Ad Library counts were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
  • Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1). Where Trustpilot sends a brand’s address to a parent company profile, we used that profile and say so.
  • Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site. We award only what we could verify on the day; three recent press mentions were not confirmed for any brand.

These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.

Common questions

Which optician brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?

Feel Good Contacts scores highest at 7.1 out of 10, ahead of Specsavers on 6.9 and Glasses Direct on 6.6. It earns the top email score of 8 for its app and rewards scheme, holds 4.7 from 70,405 Trustpilot reviews and appeared in 2 of 10 UK searches.

Which optician brand scores lowest, and why?

Cubitts scores 3.7. Its homepage links only Instagram, its Trustpilot profile has no reviews, it offers only a newsletter sign-up, and cubitts.com appeared in none of 10 UK searches. Its website, with frames priced at £175 and an online checkout, scores 10.

How do these optician brands compare on reviews?

Ratings run from 4.2 for Boots, on its parent profile, to 4.9 for Leightons and Bayfields. Vision Express has the most reviews, 356,400, followed by Glasses Direct on 285,313. Optical Express replies to 16 of its latest 20, Boots to 15 and Leightons to 12, while Specsavers and Bayfields reply to none of their latest 20.

What can a local optician copy from these brands?

Reply to every review, as Optical Express does. Collect an email at every eye test and send a recall reminder. Publish a page on what an eye test costs at your practice. Build a page for each town you serve, since six of the ten brands appeared in none of 10 UK searches.

Why does Specsavers not lead this board?

Specsavers leads on search, appearing in 3 of 10 UK searches, and holds 4.5 from 192,293 Trustpilot reviews. It scores 4 on email, for a login only, and its reviews score is held back by no replies on the latest 20. Feel Good Contacts scores higher on email and reviews.
