Optician Marketing Guide UK 2026
You will not out-Specsavers Specsavers. Independent practices win on the things the chains cannot say, and on being readable by the engines that now answer the question.
Finding
The business’s own website was cited in 143 of the 159 Google AI Mode answers Whito logged on 22 August 2026, 90%, and Google reviews or Business Profiles in 128, 81%, while Trustpilot appeared in just 2 answers and no news outlet in any.

Start, Build, Scale
The right order for independent opticians
Do the stages in order. Nothing in Build works while Start is missing.
Start, Build, Scale for independent opticians: the free foundations first, then systems and proof, then measurement. The three stages are listed in full in this figure.
Start
- GOC numbers in text
- Sight test price published
- Google Business Profile complete
Build
- One page per specialism
- Optometrist biographies
- Recalls that actually go out
Scale
- Track cost per new patient
- Dispensing follow-ups and reviews
- Build the specialist services pipeline
What we know, and what we have not measured yet
Whito has not yet run an optician-specific engine study. The figures above come from Whito’s cross-industry research and hold for any local practice: the engines cite your own website and your Google profile far more than anything else, most business sites publish no price, and one in twenty AI recommendations cannot be verified.
What we have published for opticians is a scored comparison of the five biggest UK optical brands, and a piece on how an independent competes when a customer asks an AI engine rather than walking down the high street.
When the optician study runs, it will appear on this page first, dated.
Three things that cost you visibility
Competing on the chain’s terms
Two for one and free tests are the chain’s game. Myopia management, dry eye, complex lenses and time with the optometrist are yours, if the site says so in plain words.
GOC registration nowhere a machine can read
Every optometrist and dispensing optician is on the GOC register. If the numbers are not on your site in text, the engines cannot use them.
No prices at all
Most independent sites publish nothing. A sight test price and a starting frame price, in writing, is a differentiator on its own.
Where to start
In order. Structure before scale.
Start: be findable and real
Company number, practice address and phone in text. GOC numbers per registrant. One page per specialism you genuinely offer.
Build: give machines something to read
Optician schema, a price list, optometrist biographies, and a Google Business Profile with the services filled in rather than left as a category.
Scale: build the evidence layer
Systematic review requests, a monthly check of what the engines say about opticians in your town, and the specialist pages kept current.

The register that matters
General Optical Council
Optometrists, dispensing opticians and the practice itself can all be checked on the GOC register. Registration numbers on the site, per registrant, in text.
