Hays Travel scores highest of the ten UK travel brands compared, at 7.4 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand, using publicly visible activity only: Hays Travel, Kuoni and Audley Travel on 22 October 2026 and the other seven on 23 October 2026, against fixed anchors and the same ten UK searches, run once on 22 October 2026. Meta ad counts for all ten were read on 23 October 2026. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the service. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
Travel is the one industry on our boards where every brand advertises heavily. All ten score 10 on paid, with between about 200 and about 80,000 Google ads in 30 days and active Meta ads from every brand’s own page. Ads do not separate them. Search and email do.
Hays Travel scores 7.4, ahead of TUI on 7.0 and Jet2holidays on 6.9. Hays is the only brand to appear in any of the 10 UK searches, with branch pages for Manchester, Leeds and Bristol. In most industries, marketing channels build trust. In travel, trust is the channel: nine of the ten hold 4.4 or more on Trustpilot.
Kuoni scores lowest at 5.3, with the fewest Trustpilot reviews here, 657, and no online checkout found on its homepage.

Hays Travel scores 7.4, the highest of the ten. It is the only brand on the board to appear in any of the 10 UK searches, with branch and location pages for ‘travel agent Manchester’, ‘travel agent Leeds’ and ‘travel agent Bristol’, and a travel blog adds a point, so SEO scores 7. Its website scores 10 for online booking with prices from £236pp. Reviews score 8 from 4.9 on 445,627 Trustpilot reviews, held back by no replies on the latest 20. What the channels show
Every brand pays for attention
All ten score 10 on paid. loveholidays ran about 80,000 Google ads in 30 days and Jet2holidays about 20,000, while Trailfinders, Barrhead Travel and Hays ran between about 200 and 300. Every brand had active Meta ads from its own page, from 26 for TUI to 74 for Trailfinders. When everyone advertises, ads stop being an edge.
Search belongs to directories and one agent
Nine of the ten brands appeared in none of 10 UK searches, including ‘package holidays UK’ and ‘tailor made holidays UK’. Hays Travel appeared three times, each through a branch or location page: Manchester, Leeds and Bristol. A page for each shop is what the local searches reward.
Reviews are the industry’s real currency
Nine of the ten hold 4.4 or more on Trustpilot, and four hold 4.9 or more on large volumes: Trailfinders (5.0 from 70,557), Hays Travel (4.9 from 445,627), Barrhead Travel (4.9 from 58,543) and Audley Travel (4.9 from 5,069). Replies split the field: Riviera Travel answers 17 of its latest 20, Audley and Thomas Cook 16 and TUI 12, while Hays, Jet2holidays, loveholidays, Barrhead and Kuoni answer none.
No online booking is a positioning choice
Trailfinders, Audley Travel and Kuoni show prices but send buyers to a consultant, a quote or an appointment rather than a checkout, and score 7 on website. The package sellers, TUI, Jet2holidays, loveholidays, Thomas Cook, Hays and Riviera Travel, book online and score 10. For complex trips the consultation is the conversion, and Trailfinders still holds 5.0 from 70,557 reviews.
Key lessons for any local travel agent
Build a page for every branch
Hays Travel’s branch pages took three of the five city searches. An independent agent can build one page for its own town, with its address, its staff and real trips sold, and compete where the national brands are absent.
Build your review engine before anything else
Ask for a review after every booking, ideally when documents arrive or the customer returns home. Volume at 4.8 or more is the cheapest marketing asset in travel, and four brands here hold 4.9 or more.
Reply to every review
Riviera Travel replies to 17 of its latest 20 and Audley Travel to 16. Hays Travel and Jet2holidays reply to none. A short reply in your own words shows the next customer how you treat people.
Sell the consultation, not the price
You will not out-advertise loveholidays or Jet2holidays. Trailfinders and Audley Travel make a conversation with a specialist the main route, and both score 9 on reviews.
Capture emails with a guide, not a newsletter
loveholidays and Audley Travel score 2 on email for a single form. TUI, Jet2holidays, Trailfinders and Hays add an app and score 7. A destination guide for the region you sell most is a better offer than ‘join our newsletter’.
Steal this playbook
Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.
- Reply to every review you have. Riviera Travel replies to 17 of its latest 20; five brands here reply to none.
- Build a page for your town. Hays Travel’s branch pages were the only brand pages in any of 10 UK searches.
- Ask for a review after every trip. Four brands hold 4.9 or more, and reviews are the one channel a small agent can match.
- Say clearly how customer money is protected. TUI, Jet2holidays, loveholidays, Thomas Cook and Riviera Travel all state ATOL protection on the homepage.
- Swap the newsletter form for a destination guide. Two brands here capture email with a single form and score 2.

How we scored
Who is on the board. Ten UK brands a holidaymaker is likely to meet when booking a holiday: Hays Travel (the UK’s largest independent travel agent, with high street branches), Kuoni (luxury tailor-made holidays with stores and specialists), Audley Travel (tailor-made trips built with a country specialist), Riviera Travel (escorted tours and river cruises), Trailfinders (consultant-led tailor-made travel with travel centres), TUI (package holidays, flights and cruises), Jet2holidays (package holidays from UK airports), loveholidays (online package holiday seller), Barrhead Travel (travel agent with branches across the UK) and Thomas Cook (online package holiday seller under the relaunched brand). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength.
This board was first published with scores relative to the other brands on it. On 22 October 2026 it was rescored on Whito’s fixed anchors and expanded to ten brands, so scores are not comparable with the earlier edition.
When we looked. Hays Travel, Kuoni and Audley Travel were read on 22 October 2026. The other seven were read on 23 October 2026, after the browser session used on 22 October ended. The ten searches below were run once on 22 October 2026, and every brand is counted against those same results. Meta Ad Library counts for brands added on 22 October were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.
- Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
- Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
- Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, 4 for a customer account, 6 for an app, 7 for a newsletter plus an app, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
- SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API on 22 October 2026 (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: travel agent near me UK; average cost of a family holiday abroad UK; how much does a package holiday cost UK; package holidays UK; tailor made holidays UK; travel agent London; travel agent Manchester; travel agent Birmingham; travel agent Leeds; travel agent Bristol.
- Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads, counted by the brand’s own advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
- Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
- Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site. We award only what we could verify on the day.
These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other, allowing for the day between the two reading dates. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.
Common questions
Which UK travel brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?
Hays Travel scores highest at 7.4 out of 10, ahead of TUI on 7.0 and Jet2holidays on 6.9. It is the only brand to appear in any of 10 UK searches, books holidays online with prices shown, and holds 4.9 from 445,627 Trustpilot reviews.
Which travel brand scores lowest, and why?
Kuoni scores 5.3. It advertises heavily, with about 300 Google ads and 58 Meta ads, but has the fewest Trustpilot reviews here, 657 at 4.6 with no replies on the latest 20, no online checkout found on its homepage and no appearance in any of 10 UK searches.
Can you book Trailfinders holidays online?
Trailfinders shows prices on its homepage and offers an app and online account for managing trips, but trips are arranged with a consultant, by phone or in a travel centre. It holds 5.0 from 70,557 Trustpilot reviews, the highest rating on this board.
What happened when Thomas Cook collapsed?
The original Thomas Cook failed on 23 September 2019, and around 150,000 UK holidaymakers were flown home. The brand now trades online as a package holiday seller. On 23 October 2026 it held 4.1 from 13,538 Trustpilot reviews and replied to 16 of the latest 20.
What can a small travel agent copy from these brands?
Build a page for your town, as Hays Travel does for each branch. Ask for a review after every trip and reply to every one, as Riviera Travel does. Offer a destination guide instead of a newsletter, and state clearly how customer money is protected.
