Every figure was checked on 28 July 2026 against Yell’s own site, its advertising terms dated 18 May 2026, its published accounts, and customer reports. Where Yell does not publish a number, we say so. No affiliate links on this page.

Yell now sells itself as a digital marketing agency for local businesses, with packages “from £249 a month”. Its own accounts say the average customer pays £1,841 a year. Here is what is published, what is quote-only, what the contract locks you into, and what the same money buys elsewhere.

The contract, from Yell’s own terms

Yell’s advertising terms (18 May 2026) set a 12-month initial period on Activate, Amplify and Accelerate. After that the contract rolls monthly indefinitely, with notice due 14 days before the initial period ends and some fixed-term services requiring 90 days. The clause that matters most is 19.4: leaving early costs 80% of everything remaining on the initial period. Cancel a £249 a month package after month three and you owe roughly £1,793 plus VAT. These are business contracts, so there is no statutory cooling-off period. And cancelling the direct debit does not end the contract; Yell refers unpaid balances to debt collectors.

The review gap worth knowing

Yell’s Trustpilot shows around 4.1 from roughly 15,000 reviews, but Yell invites reviews at the point of sale and onboarding. On Reviews.io, where the sample skews to customers further into the relationship, Yell scores 1.2 from 626 reviews with a 5% recommendation rate. The complaint themes repeat: cancellations delayed or disputed, leads far below what the salesperson projected, and websites paid for and not delivered.

The company behind the packages

Yell’s most recent published accounts (nine months to 31 December 2025) show revenue down 5.5% to £68.7m and customers down 17.4% in one year, from 55,200 to 45,600. Its £70.8m of notes have been extended from 2027 to 2031, and it has been lender-owned since a 2021 restructuring. Meanwhile searches for Yell.com are down roughly 91% since 2015. The directory the packages advertise on is not where UK customers look any more; Google is, with over 90% of UK search.

What the same money buys elsewhere

Amplify’s £2,988 a year minimum, spent differently:

Route one, owned foundations. A Google Business Profile is free. A decent small business website costs £500 to £1,500 once, plus about £150 a year for hosting and domain. Year one total roughly £650 to £1,650, then near zero, with no contract and everything owned by you.

Route two, straight to Google Ads. £249 a month as an actual ad budget buys around 125 clicks at a typical £2 UK cost per click. At a 10% enquiry rate that is roughly 12 enquiries a month, with every pound going to media rather than a middleman. At Accelerate money, £8,388 a year, you could fund £500 a month of ad spend plus a freelancer and still be under Yell’s floor price.

Common questions

How much does Yell cost per month in 2026?

Yell publishes three starting prices: Amplify from £249 a month, Accelerate from £699 and Local SEO from £300, all finalised on a sales call. Yell’s own accounts show the average customer pays £1,841 a year, about £153 a month.

Is the Yell listing really free?

Yes, a basic Yell.com profile costs nothing. Paid placement above it is quote-only, estimated at £30 to £100 plus a month, and the bundled packages start at £249 a month.

How long is a Yell contract?

Yell’s terms set a 12-month initial period on its main packages, then the contract rolls monthly unless you give notice 14 days before renewal. Some fixed-term services require 90 days’ notice.

What happens if I cancel Yell early?

Clause 19.4 of Yell’s terms charges 80% of everything left on your 12-month initial period. Quitting a £249 a month package after three months costs roughly £1,793 plus VAT.

Is Yell worth it compared with Google Ads?

The £2,988 a year Yell’s cheapest package costs would buy around 1,500 Google Ads clicks at typical UK rates, with no lock-in. Reviewers also report Yell adding around 40% in management fees to click costs, a figure Yell has not confirmed.

Three things to say on the phone to a Yell salesperson

  1. “Send me the total 12-month cost in writing.” From £249 means at least £2,988 committed, and leaving early still costs 80% of the remainder.
  2. “I will claim the free things first.” The free Yell listing and a free Google Business Profile cost nothing. If your Google profile, website and reviews are not sorted, no package fixes that.
  3. “Where is the exit?” Diarise the 14-day notice window before signing, and never just cancel the direct debit.
