Most rate arguments start from a number someone remembers, not a number anyone published. This checker holds your rate up against the published 2026 figures, both the freelance averages and what agencies charge for a day of similar work, so the comparison runs in both directions.
We call that second view the day-rate mirror: a freelance day rate only looks expensive until it stands next to the published agency day rate for the same work. Free, instant, no email wall.

Freelance figures are the 2026 averages from the YunoJuno Freelancer Rates Report (platform data, more than 182,000 data points across 2024 and 2025), as read in Whito’s September 2026 day-rates study. The marketing and comms average is £418 a day, up from £389 the year before.
| Seniority | Average day rate |
|---|---|
| Midweight | £305 |
| Senior | £405 |
| Lead | £468 |
| Director level | £538 |
| Role | Average day rate |
|---|---|
| PR specialist | £422 |
| Marketing consultant | £418 |
| Analytics consultant | £413 |
| Events manager | £375 |
| SEO consultant | £374 |
| Paid social specialist | £335 |
| Social media manager | £326 |
| Digital marketing specialist | £325 |
Cross-checks from rates quoted in UK job adverts (ITJobsWatch, six months to 2 September 2026): digital marketing contract median £429 a day (63 quoted rates, down 10% year on year); SEO contract median £413 a day (30 rates, directional). Thresholds from the same Whito study: a quote under £250 a day is a warning sign; over £550 suggests director-level pricing.
The day-rate mirror: what agencies publish for a day
Published UK agency day rates from the same study: Anicca Digital’s rate card runs £900 to £1,125 plus VAT depending on commitment; Mediaworks publishes £895 blended on the Digital Marketplace, £1,200 for director time; It Just So Happens publishes £110 to £950 by experience band, founder time from £1,200. One agency guide (Sidekick, March 2026, guidance not survey data) puts junior days at £500 to £800, mid at £800 to £1,200 and senior strategic at £1,200 to £2,000 and above.
That is the mirror: a senior freelancer at £405 a day sits at roughly a third to a half of a published agency day for comparable hands-on work. Neither number is wrong; they buy different things, and the three questions below tell you which one you need.
What about region?
Straight answer: no UK rate report we can verify publishes freelance marketing day rates split by region at a credible sample size. The averages above are national, and the published agency rate cards cited are national or London-weighted. Regional variation is real but unquantified in public data, so this checker tells you that instead of inventing a multiplier. If a day rate is pitched as a London premium or a regional discount, ask what published figure it is a premium or discount on.
Three questions that protect your budget
First: what does a day mean here, seven and a half hours or a notional unit? At 7.5 hours, £418 a day is about £56 an hour, our arithmetic. Second: is VAT inside or on top? A £1,125 day becomes £1,350 if you cannot reclaim it. Third: how many delivered days does a monthly fee actually buy? £2,000 a month for three delivered days is £667 a day, whatever the headline rate says.

FAQs
What is a fair freelance marketing day rate in the UK in 2026?
The published 2026 averages: midweight £305, senior £405, lead £468, director level £538 a day, with a marketing and comms average of £418 (YunoJuno 2026 report, read in Whito’s September 2026 study). Rates quoted in job adverts put the digital marketing contract median at £429 a day.
Is £500 a day too much for a freelancer?
Not on the published figures, if the work is lead or director level: those averages are £468 and £538. It is above the senior average of £405, so ask what the extra £95 or so a day buys. Over £550 suggests director-level pricing; under £250 is a warning sign.
Why do agencies charge more per day than freelancers?
Published agency day rates (£895 to £1,125 on the rate cards we read) carry the agency’s team, tools, management and margin. A freelance day buys one person’s time. The day-rate mirror is for seeing that gap clearly, not for pretending it should not exist.
Do freelance day rates differ by UK region?
Almost certainly, but no published report we can verify splits them by region at a credible sample size, so this checker gives you the national published figures and says so rather than inventing a regional multiplier.
