AI search is when someone asks a question and an AI tool answers it directly, instead of handing them a list of links. ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity all work this way. The tool reads the web, decides what it trusts, and writes one answer.
That changes how customers find businesses. In old search, ten businesses shared page one and the customer clicked around. In AI search, the engine often names one or two businesses inside the answer, and many customers never click anywhere at all. AI Overviews now appear in around 43% of Google searches, and most AI answers end without a click.
For a small business the question is no longer only “do I rank?” but “does the engine know I exist, and can it verify me?” AI engines lean on sources they can check: consistent business details, live listings, reviews, a company record that resolves, and pages that answer real questions plainly.
You cannot buy your way into the answer itself. Ads are appearing around AI answers, but the recommendation inside is earned, which is why the practical work is making your business checkable and citable rather than chasing tricks.
Whito’s view (UK)
We test AI engines on real UK questions every month. They disagree with each other 92% of the time on the best tradesperson, and they sometimes recommend dead companies, because they reward what they can verify, not who is loudest. The businesses that win AI search are the ones a machine can check in thirty seconds.
