To leave an SEO or PPC agency well, read your contract’s notice and minimum-term clauses. Then make sure your business owns every account, and give notice in writing. Start with one check: Whito’s 29 September 2026 study found 19 of 39 UK agency pricing pages do not say when and how you can leave.
Plenty of good agencies stop being the right fit as a business grows. The risk is leaving before you hold the keys to your own marketing.
This checklist is not legal advice. Your contract governs how and when you can leave. Read its notice and minimum-term clauses before you do anything else, and take advice if the wording is unclear.
Start with the leave-date test
On 29 September 2026 Whito read the pricing pages and public terms of 39 UK agencies that publish a monthly price. The full register is in our agency contract terms study.
We used one simple check, the leave-date test.
From the pricing page alone, write down the earliest date you could stop paying and what you would have to do by when. 20 pages passed. 19 failed.
The contract matters more than the sales page. From the same study:
- 12 of the 39 agencies hold a minimum term somewhere, and 5 of those 12 keep it off the pricing page.
- 13 of the 39 state no notice period anywhere we could reach.
- 22 of the 39 had no usable service terms on their public site on the day.
- The longest minimum term found, twelve months with automatic renewal, sat only in a terms document the pricing page never mentions.
On terms like that last one, missing a non-renewal window can commit you for another year. So run the leave-date test on your own signed contract, not the website.
- Find the start date of the agreement.
- Find the minimum term, if any, and the date it ends.
- Find the notice period and what it runs from. Some contracts let notice run during the minimum term. Others only allow it afterwards.
- Check for automatic renewal and any window for giving notice of non-renewal.
- Write down one date: the earliest day you could stop paying.
Say your contract started on 1 March with a six-month minimum and 30 days’ notice. Whether your last paid month is August or September depends on the exact wording. If you cannot tell, ask the agency to confirm the date in writing.
What to secure before you give notice
Do this before the notice email. Your business should hold the top level of access on every account, in its own name, with its own email address.
| Asset | Who should own it | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name (registrar account) | Your business, as the named registrant, in a registrar account you log into | Log into the registrar account yourself. Check the registrant name and the renewal date. Nominet, the .uk registry, runs a domain lookup tool. |
| Website hosting and CMS admin login | Your business, with an administrator login on your own email | Log in to the hosting account and to the website admin. Confirm you can add and remove users, and that the hosting bill is in your name. |
| Google Ads account | Your business, with at least one Admin user on your own email | Check your access level is Admin. Google says Admin is the level that “can give account access, change access levels and cancel invitations from other users”. Admins can also unlink manager accounts. |
| Google Analytics 4 property | Your business, with the Administrator role at account level | Check your role is Administrator, which Google describes as “full control of Analytics”. An Editor cannot manage users. |
| Google Search Console | Your business, as a verified owner | Check you are listed as an owner, and that you verified it yourself (Google’s permission levels). A delegated owner was added by someone else. |
| Google Business Profile | Your business, as primary owner | Check you are the primary owner. Google allows only one, and only owners can remove other owners and managers. |
| Content and images | Whoever the contract names, so check it says your business | Read the contract’s ownership or intellectual property clause. Ask for the original files and any image licences, and check whose name the licences are in. |
| Reporting data | You should hold a copy | List every report, dashboard and tracking tool. Note which live in the agency’s own tools. Those may disappear when you leave. |
Google Ads. Many agencies manage clients through a manager account (Google calls it MCC). Google’s manager account help says “linking a manager account doesn’t automatically grant administrative ownership”.
If the account was created inside the agency’s manager account, ask who holds ownership.
Google’s access levels page also warns: “If your account has only one administrator, you may lose access to your tags if that user becomes unavailable.” Make sure your business holds an Admin login of its own.
Our PPC costs research gives the same advice: always own your own Google Ads account.
Search Console. Google says “a property must have at least one verified owner, or no users will have access to the property”. So become a verified owner before the agency is removed, not after.
Business Profile. For their first seven days, new owners cannot remove other owners or managers, or transfer primary ownership. If you are being added now, allow a week before notice.

How to give notice
Give notice in writing, in the form your contract asks for. Email is normal, but some contracts name a method or an address. Keep a copy.
Your notice should include:
- The date of the notice.
- The agreement you are ending, and the clause you are relying on.
- The end date you have worked out, with a request that they confirm it or correct it in writing.
- A request for the final invoice amount and date.
- A list of what you need handed over, taken from the table above.
- A request that nothing is deleted, unlinked or changed until the handover is complete.
Keep it plain and polite. Give a reason only if the contract asks for one.
What to expect in the handover
Many agencies handle this well. Expect the handover to cover:
- A written list of every account, tool and login set up for your business.
- Admin or owner access transferred to you where you do not already have it.
- Exports of reports, keyword or ranking history, and any campaign notes.
- Original content files and images, as your contract allows.
- A note of work in progress, so the next person knows what was half done.
- Logins passed over a secure method, not in a plain email.
If something is slow to arrive, ask again in writing and give a date.
The first 30 days after you leave
Once the end date has passed, close the doors behind the agency.
- Remove old access. Take agency users off Google Ads, GA4, Search Console, Business Profile, hosting and the website.
- Remove old verification. Google says removed Search Console owners’ verification tokens are not revoked, so they could verify again. Delete any verification file, tag or DNS record the agency added.
- Change passwords on any shared login, including the registrar and hosting.
- Check tracking still works. Confirm GA4 is still recording visits and Google Ads is still recording conversions.
- Check renewals. Make sure the domain and hosting renew on your card, not the agency’s.
- Set a baseline. Note this month’s search clicks, enquiries and ad spend, so you can judge what comes next.
Do not judge the decision on the first few weeks. Our research on how long SEO takes explains why.
Questions people ask
Can my agency keep my Google Ads account when I leave?
It depends on how the account was set up and what your contract says. Check your access level is Admin in Google Ads before you give notice. If the account sits inside the agency’s manager account, ask who holds ownership.
How much notice do I have to give my marketing agency?
Your contract decides, so read its notice and minimum-term clauses. Whito’s 29 September 2026 study found 13 of 39 UK agencies state no notice period anywhere public. The signed contract is often the only place it is written down.
Should I tell the agency before I have my logins?
Secure access first. Most handovers are friendly, but it is easier to fix an access problem while the relationship is still working.
What is the leave-date test?
From the pricing page alone, write down the earliest date you could stop paying and what you would have to do by when. Whito uses it to check agency pricing pages. You can run the same test on your own signed contract.
The takeaway
Structure before the exit. Know your leave date, own every account, then give notice in writing. Do it in that order and leaving an agency is an admin job, not a crisis.
Before your next agency, see where your site stands today. Run the free Visibility Check: 17 checks, about twenty seconds, no email, no sales call.
For a monthly record of whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode name your business, there is the Visibility Monitor. It asks five fixed questions on the same day each month, with a PDF and raw CSV, for £280 a month, cancel any time. It records what the engines say and does not change it.
