Co-op Funeralcare scores highest of the ten UK funeral brands compared, at 6.9 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand, using publicly visible activity only: nine brands on 22 October 2026 and Golden Leaves on 23 October 2026, against fixed anchors and the same ten UK searches, run once on 22 October 2026. Meta ad counts for all ten were read on 23 October 2026. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the service. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
This is the industry where the regulator had to force businesses to put their prices on the wall. The Competition and Markets Authority’s 2021 order requires funeral directors to display a standardised price list. On this board, only Co-op Funeralcare, Simplicity and Golden Leaves show both prices and an FCA firm reference number online.
Co-op Funeralcare scores 6.9, ahead of Pure Cremation on 5.9, with Dignity and Golden Leaves level on 5.7. Co-op publishes direct cremation at £1,495 all-inclusive, replies to 16 of its latest 20 Trustpilot reviews and ran 14 active Meta ads from its funeralcare page. Dignity appeared in all five city searches for funeral directors, the strongest search showing here.
Avalon Funeral Plans scores lowest at 3.0. Its homepage now sends new buyers to Golden Leaves, and no Google or Meta ads were found for it.

What the channels show
Reviews are strong across the sector
Nine of the ten brands hold 4.7 or more on Trustpilot. Pure Cremation has the most reviews, 35,302 at 4.8, and Farewill 20,846 at 4.9. Reply habits differ: Golden Leaves replies to 19 of its latest 20, Co-op Funeralcare and Aura to 16, Simplicity 13 and Dignity 12, while Farewill, Distinct Cremations and Avalon reply to none.
One brand holds local search
Dignity appeared in all five city searches, from ‘funeral directors London’ to ‘funeral directors Bristol’. Co-op appeared in two, and Pure Cremation, Simplicity and Funeral Partners once each. Five brands appeared in none. The general searches, such as ‘funeral directors near me UK’ and ‘funeral plans UK’, went to directories, consumer guides and news sites.
Plan sellers advertise on Facebook
Five brands score 10 on paid, each with 10 or more active Meta ads from its own page alongside Google ads: Distinct Cremations (57), Simplicity (43), Aura (22), Pure Cremation (17) and Co-op Funeralcare (14). Dignity ran 9 Meta ads beside about 2,000 Google ads and scores 8, as does Golden Leaves. Farewill and Funeral Partners ran Google ads only, and no ads were found for Avalon. Funeral plans are bought ahead of need, by people who are not searching yet, which may explain why plan sellers lean on social feeds.
Prices online, registration numbers less often
Seven brands show a price on the homepage or a costs page. Only Co-op Funeralcare, Simplicity and Golden Leaves show a price and an FCA firm reference number together, and score 8. Pure Cremation shows its reference number with offers but no plan price. Dignity shows no price on its homepage.
Key lessons for any funeral business
Put your prices online, not just on the wall
The CMA already makes you display a price list in the branch. Co-op Funeralcare, Simplicity and Golden Leaves put theirs online beside a registration number, and all three score 8 on website.
Build a page for your town
Dignity’s branch pages appeared in all five city searches. A local funeral director can build the same page for its own town, with its address, prices and the people who will help.
Reply to every review
Golden Leaves replies to 19 of its latest 20, and Co-op Funeralcare and Aura to 16. A short, personal reply to a family’s thanks shows the next family how you treat people.
Display your protections
If you sell plans, your FCA firm reference number belongs where visitors see it. Pure Cremation, Co-op Funeralcare, Simplicity and Golden Leaves show it; the other plan sellers here did not on the day.
Steal this playbook
Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.
- Reply to every review you have. Golden Leaves replies to 19 of its latest 20 and scores 9 on reviews.
- Publish your standardised price list on your website. Only three brands here show prices and a registration number together.
- Build a page for each town you serve. Dignity’s city pages appeared in all five city searches.
- Show your FCA firm reference number if you sell plans. Put it on the homepage, next to the price.
- Offer a guide in exchange for an email address. Six of the ten capture no email we could see.

How we scored
Who is on the board. Ten UK brands a family is likely to meet when arranging a funeral or buying a funeral plan: Pure Cremation (national direct cremation and plan provider), Co-op Funeralcare (national funeral director owned by the Co-op), Farewill (online wills, probate and cremation, owned by Dignity since 2024), Aura (funeral plan and direct cremation provider), Dignity (national funeral director network), Funeral Partners (group of local funeral homes), Simplicity (low-cost funerals and plans, part of the Dignity group), Distinct Cremations (direct cremation and plan provider), Golden Leaves (funeral plan provider) and Avalon Funeral Plans (funeral plan provider, now part of Golden Leaves). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength. Golden Charter was on the first version of this top ten, but its website returned ‘502 Bad Gateway’ on every attempt on 22 and 23 October 2026, so it was replaced with Golden Leaves, chosen by the same rule.
This board was first published with scores relative to the other brands on it. On 22 October 2026 it was rescored on Whito’s fixed anchors and expanded to ten brands, so scores are not comparable with the earlier edition.
When we looked. Nine brands were read on 22 October 2026 and Golden Leaves on 23 October 2026. The ten searches below were run once on 22 October 2026, and Golden Leaves is counted against those same saved results. Meta Ad Library counts for brands added on 22 October were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.
- Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
- Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
- Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, 4 for a customer account, 6 for an app, 7 for a newsletter plus an app, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
- SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API on 22 October 2026 (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: funeral directors near me UK; funeral cost UK; direct cremation cost; funeral plans UK; what to do when someone dies; funeral directors London; funeral directors Manchester; funeral directors Birmingham; funeral directors Leeds; funeral directors Bristol.
- Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads, counted by the brand’s own advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
- Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
- Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site. We award only what we could verify on the day.
These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.
Common questions
Which UK funeral brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?
Co-op Funeralcare scores highest at 6.9 out of 10, ahead of Pure Cremation on 5.9, with Dignity and Golden Leaves on 5.7. It shows prices and its FCA firm reference number online, holds 4.7 from 6,364 Trustpilot reviews with replies to 16 of the latest 20, and ran 14 active Meta ads.
How much does a direct cremation cost?
On 22 October 2026, Co-op Funeralcare showed direct cremation at £1,495 all-inclusive and Simplicity from £1,399. Prices vary by provider and circumstances, so compare the standardised price lists before choosing.
Are prepaid funeral plans safe now?
Prepaid funeral plans have been regulated by the FCA since July 2022, following collapses including Safe Hands Plans, which affected around 46,000 customers. Check any provider’s FCA authorisation and how your money is protected before buying.
What happened to Farewill?
Farewill was acquired by Dignity in October 2024 and still trades under its own name, selling wills, probate and cremation online. On 22 October 2026 it held 4.9 from 20,846 Trustpilot reviews.
What can a small funeral director copy from these brands?
Put your price list on your website, build a page for your town, and reply to every review. Dignity’s town pages took all five city searches, and the brands that reply to most reviews score highest on reviews.
