Opening a business bank account is a half-hour job if you arrive with the right details, and a stalled application if you guess at them.
We read the application and eligibility pages of 18 UK providers on 1 October 2026. On 1 October 2026 Barclays asked applicants for three years of address history and HSBC said 65% of its accounts opened within 24 hours.

Pick the account before the bank
Most refusals and delays come from applying to a provider that was never going to say yes. Check three things first: whether your legal structure is accepted (Monzo takes sole traders and limited company directors; Starling’s business account takes limited companies and LLPs and has a separate sole trader account; several app providers skip general partnerships), whether your trade is supported (client money, heavy cash and some industries are excluded at app banks), and whether a turnover cap applies (Virgin Money’s M Account stops at £1m).
Our best business bank accounts UK page prices a standard year at 15 accounts, and the trade pages under it name the accounts that fit plumbers, builders, salons, solicitors and ten more.
What you need to apply
Gather these before you start. The list is Barclays’, and the other banks ask for much the same:
- You must be at least 18, and at least one person on the application must be a UK resident.
- Your residential addresses for the past three years, for every named person.
- The trading address of the business.
- For a limited company, the Companies House registration number and date of incorporation.
- Details about the business, including tax information and turnover.
- Full names, mobile numbers and email addresses of directors or partners, where they apply.
App providers add a photo ID check in the app. Starling says each director with access must provide written evidence of their authority on request.
How long it takes
HSBC publishes the clearest figure: 65% of accounts were opened within 24 hours, based on March to May 2026 data, with the caveat that opening times vary and some applications fail. App providers typically decide within days. A company with several owners, a trust in the structure, or a name mismatch against Companies House goes to manual review, and that is where weeks disappear.
The single cheapest way to speed it up: make the name on the application match the name at Companies House exactly, and use the registered spelling of every director’s name.
Where applications go wrong
The trade is excluded
Starling lists businesses that hold client money, such as accountants and solicitors, and businesses that regularly make significant cash deposits among those it does not support. Monzo does not allow its accounts to be used as client trust accounts. Read the eligibility page before the application, and see FSCS protection on business accounts for who is behind each account.
The structure is wrong for the provider
General partnerships are the awkward case: Starling and Monzo do not take them, while the high street banks do. Mettle allows up to two owners and lets only one of them access the account. Santander’s Classic account allows a maximum of two directors, owners or partners.
The money side is unusual
Large expected cash takings, payments from abroad, or a regulated activity all push an application to a human. None of these is fatal at the right provider; all of them are slow at the wrong one.
After it opens
- Connect your bookkeeping software on day one. NatWest and Mettle include FreeAgent; see our FreeAgent review.
- Set up a separate pot or account for tax money. Our business savings accounts page lists the rates.
- Give customers the new details on your next invoice.
- If you are moving from another bank, the switching business bank account page covers the seven working day switch service.
A business account you open with clean records in week one costs less than one you untangle at year end. Start with the account that fits the trade, bring the full address history, and match every name to the register.
Questions
How long does it take to open a business bank account?
App providers decide in hours or days. HSBC said 65% of accounts were opened within 24 hours, based on March to May 2026 data. High street applications with several directors can take longer, and any application can go to manual review.
What documents do I need to open a business bank account?
Photo ID and address history for every named person, your trading address, and for a limited company its Companies House number and incorporation date. Barclays also asks for tax information, turnover and the details of directors or partners.
Can I open a business bank account before I start trading?
Yes. NatWest’s start-up account is for businesses trading under a year, and Santander’s start-up offer is for businesses opening their first account. Opening the account on day one keeps the records clean from the first invoice.
Why would a bank refuse my business account application?
Common published reasons are an unsupported industry, holding client money, heavy cash use, or an ownership structure the provider does not accept. Starling, for example, lists businesses that hold client money among those it does not support, and Monzo accepts only sole traders and limited company directors.
