Marketing for pest control companies
Pest work is urgent, local and bought on trust, and the customer usually rings the first credible answer. This page covers being that answer: findable, checkable and honest about prices.
FINDING
Checkatrade was cited in 50 of the 60 Google AI Mode answers Whito collected for electricians, plumbers and roofers across 20 UK towns on 22 August 2026, 83%, while only 9% of UK homeowners rate a builder’s website among their top three factors.

What we know, and what we have not measured yet
Whito has not yet run an AI visibility study on pest control. The figures above mix our cross-industry trades work, 159 Google AI Mode answers logged in August 2026 and 64 tradespeople checked against Companies House in July, with the British Pest Control Association’s own published numbers, read at source on 4 September 2026 and attributed to the BPCA throughout. The council call-out split comes from the BPCA’s last full national survey, which covers 2015/16, and we date it every time we use it.
Two structural facts shape this trade’s marketing. Councils have been withdrawing from pest control for a decade, by the BPCA’s own account, and private firms have absorbed the urgent demand. And the sector’s prices are unusually visible, because dozens of councils still publish fee tables, which means a private firm’s prices are always being compared with a published number whether it likes it or not.
When the pest control engine study runs, it lands on this page first. Until then, the AI Visibility Index shows the method across eight sectors.
Whito need-to-know for pest control firms
- There is no licence, but there is a gate. The BPCA states the UK has no licensed pest technicians. The real gate is chemical: professional rodenticides cannot be bought without proof of approved training under the CRRU stewardship rules, and from January 2026 sellers must verify it. Say on your site that you clear that gate.
- Councils set a public price anchor. Kensington and Chelsea publishes £258.80 for a rodent treatment, Lancaster £91. Whatever you charge sits against a published council figure, so publish your own number with what it includes.
- Membership is checkable, so use it. BPCA members are audited to BS EN 16636, technicians hold at least a Level 2 award, and insurance is independently verified. NPTA runs its own member search. Both bodies have public directories: name yours in text.
- Wasps peak when you are busiest. The BPCA notes wasp danger peaks in September as nests gorge on fermenting fruit. Seasonal pages published in advance catch demand the day it spikes.
Why most pest control firms struggle to get found
The platform sits between you and the panic
Urgent searches surface directories and national brands first. Checkatrade appeared in 83% of the AI trade answers we logged, and Rentokil’s scale buys the rest of the shelf.
Nothing distinguishes you from the van with a hose
Anyone can trade as a pest controller. If your BPCA or NPTA membership, training and insurance are not written in text, you and the unqualified operator look identical to a frightened customer.
Price silence in a market with published fees
Councils publish exact fees, and private firms mostly publish nothing. The customer concludes the private quote is whatever they can get away with.
What actually works
In this order. Do not skip to ads.
A Google Business Profile built for urgency
Real trading name, service areas, hours that are true, photos of real jobs and real equipment, and reviews that name the pest and the response time. This is where the 7am wasp panic lands.
Proof in plain text
BPCA or NPTA membership, technician qualifications, CRRU-compliant training, insurance level, company number. Text on every page, not badges in images.
Published prices with the council comparison
Your wasp, rodent and insect from-prices, dated, next to the local council’s published fee and waiting time. Honest framing wins the comparison you are already in.
A page per pest
Wasps, rats, mice, bed bugs, cockroaches, ants. One page each with treatment, price range and what the customer should do before you arrive. These are the pages engines quote.
Answer the phone
Urgent trades are won on answered calls. A missed-call text-back and honest hours beat another directory membership.
Stop buying shared leads first
Shared leads sell the same panic to several firms. Fix the free channels above before paying to race rivals for it.
Quick wins this week
Publish three from-prices
Wasp nest, rodent treatment, general insect visit, with the date and what each includes. One evening, and you now beat the price silence of most local rivals.
Put your proof in text
BPCA or NPTA number, training, insurance, company number, on the site footer and Google profile. An hour, free.
Ask five customers for reviews
Text the review link after treatment, asking them to name the pest, the area and how fast you came. Five specific reviews change how your profile reads.
Common mistakes
Scare copy
Disease lists and horror photos read as manipulation and get skipped by engines looking for useful answers. The customer is already frightened. Sell calm competence instead.
Vague claims where checkable proof exists
“Fully qualified and insured” is noise. “BPCA member, audited to BS EN 16636, £2m public liability, technicians hold the Level 2 award” is checkable and does the work.
Renting all visibility from directories
Directory membership can fill gaps, but if every enquiry arrives through a platform, the platform owns your customer list and your margin. Build the profile and pages you own alongside.

The register that matters
No licence. A chemical gate, and two checkable bodies.
The BPCA states the UK has no licensed pest technicians and no mandatory professional body. What exists instead: the CRRU stewardship regime, under which professional rodenticides can only be bought with proof of approved training completed in the past five years or membership of a recognised CPD scheme, with sellers required to verify from January 2026. The BPCA audits member companies annually against BS EN 16636, requires at least a Level 2 Award in Pest Management for technicians, independently verifies insurance at a £2m public liability minimum, and runs a public find-a-pest-controller search, with published fees from £420 a year for new firms. The NPTA represents over 1,100 member businesses and runs its own public search, with fees on application. COSHH duties under HSE rules apply to anyone using hazardous substances at work, and wildlife law constrains what can be treated and how. All read at source on 4 September 2026. This is marketing guidance, not safety or legal advice: check CRRU, HSE and the associations directly for your obligations, and write what you comply with on your website in plain text.

Looking for a pest controller instead?
Whito is a marketing guide for the trade, not a booking site. If you are trying to hire, the Whito directory lists verified UK businesses, and every listing is checked against the public record before it appears.
Whito is independent and companies cannot pay to appear in our guidance. Pesticide use is regulated: this page is marketing advice, and COSHH, CRRU and wildlife law obligations should be checked with HSE, CRRU and the BPCA or NPTA directly.
