A USP, or unique selling point, is the specific reason a customer should choose you rather than the next business in the list. Not “quality service at competitive prices”, which is what everyone says, but something true, specific and yours.

The test is simple: could a competitor put your exact words on their website without lying? “Friendly local plumber” passes for everyone, so it is not a USP. “Fixed-price boiler repairs, booked online, with the price shown before you book” fails for most, so it is one.

Good USPs usually come from one of four places. What you specialise in (one trade, one audience, one problem). How you charge (fixed prices, no call-out fee, payment plans). How you prove yourself (guarantees, qualifications, published results). Or how you operate (same-day, evenings, one point of contact from quote to finish).

Your USP is a Start-stage decision, and it comes before spending on marketing. Every ad, page and listing works harder when it carries a specific reason to choose you. Without one, you are paying to broadcast the same sentence as your competitors.

The rise of AI search makes this sharper. An answer engine summarising your trade has read every “trusted local expert” line ever written and gives them no weight. What it can repeat is a concrete, checkable claim. A real USP is not just persuasion any more. It is the sentence a machine can quote about you.
