You have heard the line a hundred times. Young people do not Google any more, they search on TikTok. It gets repeated at every conference and in every pitch deck. It is half true, and acting on the half that is wrong will cost you.

What the data actually says

Yes, younger people search on TikTok. Around 65% of Gen Z say they have used it as a search engine. But look closer and the simple story falls apart.

When people are asked which platform they find most helpful for search, Google still wins comfortably at 85%. TikTok sits near the bottom at 16%. Used for search numbers are almost level across the board: Instagram 67%, TikTok 62%, Google 61%.

And the preference for TikTok over Google has not grown. It has shrunk, from 8% in 2024 to 4% in 2026.

Why it matters to you

Search did not move from Google to TikTok. It spread out. Your next customer might check Google, then a TikTok video, then a Reddit thread, then ask an AI to sum it up.

That is the real shift. Not one winner, but many front doors. We have written before about how more customers now start in ChatGPT and how AI Mode is changing search traffic.

The mistake most businesses make

The mistake is to treat this as a swap. You hear “TikTok is the new Google”, so you pull effort out of your website and pour it into one app, chasing a young audience you may not even sell to.

Then the trend cools, the algorithm changes, and you have built your shopfront on rented land.

What to do instead

Start: get your facts straight everywhere. Your name, what you do, where you work and what you charge should say the same thing on your website, your Google Business Profile and your social pages. Fragmented information is what gets you skipped, on every platform.

Build: be findable on the surfaces your buyers actually use. For most UK businesses that is still Google and Maps first, then the one or two social channels where your customers spend time. Pick those on purpose, not on hype.

Scale: only chase a new search channel when the audience matches. If you sell to under 25s, TikTok search is worth real effort. If you sell to homeowners or other businesses, do not bet the year on it.

The takeaway

TikTok is a search channel, not the search channel. The winners are not the businesses that picked the trendy app. They are the ones easy to find and easy to trust wherever the question gets asked.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok replacing Google for search?

No. Google is still rated most helpful for search by a wide margin, at 85% against TikTok’s 16%. Search has fragmented across several platforms rather than moving to one.

Should my business be on TikTok?

Only if your customers are. For many UK businesses, Google, Maps and one or two social channels matter more than TikTok.

What is the single best move?

Keep your business details consistent everywhere, so you are not skipped on any platform.
