Google has started showing UK businesses something nobody could see before: how often their pages appear inside AI search answers.

On 3 June, Google added a new report to Search Console called Search Generative AI performance. It tracks impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, the answer boxes that now sit above the normal blue links. The rollout is starting with a subset of UK website owners before going global.

For once, Britain is at the front of the queue. The question is what you do with the data when it lands.

What actually happened

Until now, AI search visibility was invisible. When Google’s AI summarised your page in an answer, that activity was bundled into your overall Search Console numbers. You could not separate it out.

The new report gives AI its own view. You can see impressions broken down by page, country, device and date.

Two things are worth being honest about.

First, it is impressions only. There are no clicks, no click through rate, and no query data yet. You can see that AI is showing your content. You cannot yet see whether anyone acted on it.

Second, Google added a separate toggle that lets you block your content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI. Switching it on does not hurt your normal Search ranking. It simply removes you from the AI answers.

Why it matters for small businesses

Most owners will do one of two things, and both are mistakes.

Some will open the report, see a big impressions number, and assume it means new customers. It does not. An impression inside an AI answer is not a visit, a lead or a sale. Treating it as one is how businesses end up celebrating vanity metrics while the bank balance stays flat.

Others will panic about AI scraping their work, find the block toggle, and switch themselves off. That removes you from the exact place buyers are starting to look. You would be hiding from the shop window because you do not like the new glass.

The calmer read is the right one. This is a visibility signal, not a revenue figure. It tells you what AI already trusts your site to answer.

What to do about it

Here is the practical order of work. It sits in the Build stage, because it is about measurement and channels, not foundations.

StepActionWhy
1Check the report is live in your Search ConsoleUK accounts are getting it first, yours may already be there
2Note which pages show AI impressionsThese are the pages AI already trusts
3Strengthen those pages, do not block themClear answers, real expertise, plain structure
4Keep watching your normal clicks and enquiriesThat is still where the money shows up

Do not block your content unless you have a specific reason, such as protecting paid or private material. For most small businesses, being quoted in an AI answer is free shelf space.

And do not redesign your whole site around an impressions number. You would be optimising for a metric Google itself has not finished building.

The Takeaway

AI search data is finally visible, and UK businesses are seeing it first. That is a genuine head start. But a head start only counts if you read the map correctly.

Impressions tell you where AI notices you. Clicks and enquiries tell you whether it pays. Watch the first, but keep banking on the second.
