This guide explains how will writing is priced in the UK and what moves the number. It quotes no price ranges, because Whito has not yet collected will-writing prices and will not invent them. Many firms do publish prices; those are the firm’s own numbers to read on the firm’s own page, with its date. When Whito runs its will-writing price collection, published prices only, the dated results will be published here.
The products
Most pricing follows the product, not the hour. A single will covers one person. Mirror wills are a matched pair for a couple, normally priced below two singles. Beyond those sit trust wills, which carry real complexity and real price jumps, and lasting powers of attorney, often sold alongside. Each is a separate product with a separate price; a quote should name which you are buying.
Who is quoting, and what that means
Three kinds of firm sell wills. Solicitors, regulated by the SRA, where the will comes with regulatory protection and the Legal Ombudsman behind it. Will writers who belong to the Society of Will Writers or the Institute of Professional Willwriters, whose codes require training and professional indemnity insurance; membership is checkable on each body’s own search, and it is not regulation. And firms on no list, which is lawful, because will writing is not a reserved legal activity, and is exactly why the price alone cannot be the comparison.
What moves the price
Complexity first: children from previous relationships, business assets, property abroad and trust arrangements all move a will out of the fixed-fee bracket. Then delivery: home visits cost more than office appointments, which often cost more than online. Then the quiet second bill: storage of the original, sometimes free, sometimes an annual fee, and executor services, where a firm names itself executor and charges the estate later. The executor clause can cost beneficiaries far more than the will ever cost the customer; ask about it before signing.
The comparison that actually works
Compare like with like: the same product, the same delivery, with insurance and membership or regulation stated, storage terms stated, and the executor question answered in writing. A cheap will with the firm as executor is frequently the most expensive option on the table.
The questions that protect you
Which of the three kinds of firm are you, and where do I check that? Is the fee fixed, and what product does it cover? Where is the original stored and at what cost? Who is the executor, and what would your firm charge the estate to act? Any careful firm answers all four in writing.
