Will Writer Marketing Guide UK 2026

Marketing for will writers

Will writing is not a reserved legal activity. Anyone can sell a will tomorrow, no register has to approve them, and a membership badge is not regulation. Ask an AI engine for a will writer and it cannot tell a solicitor from a Society of Will Writers member from someone with a template and a logo. In a trade without a licence, what you can prove is the whole pitch.

The right order for will writers

Do the stages in order. Nothing in Build works while Start is missing.

Start, Build, Scale for will writers: the free foundations first, then systems and proof, then measurement.

Start

  • A plain sentence: solicitor, SWW member, IPW member, or independent, with the body named and linked
  • Professional indemnity insurance stated, with the cover level
  • Prices published for a single will and mirror wills

Build

  • One page per product: single, mirror, trusts, LPAs, each saying what it is not
  • Reviews asked for after signing, naming the product
  • A clear line on where original wills are stored and what storage costs

Scale

  • Track enquiries to signed wills by product
  • Partnerships with funeral planners and financial advisers
  • Review pricing yearly against what solicitors publish

What we know, and what we have not measured yet

Whito has not yet run a study on this trade, so this page quotes no will prices and no invented findings. The first will writer study is specified in the research stub below: the same request in 12 UK towns, every name classed as SRA firm, IPW member, SWW member, or on none of the three.

What we can already say: will writing is not reserved, so the trade splits into solicitors regulated by the SRA, members of voluntary bodies, and firms on no list at all. All three can sell you a will. Only the first is regulated for it.

The wider picture across every industry we track is in the UK AI Visibility Index.

Whito need-to-know for will writers

  • “Regulated” is the wrong word for a badge. SWW and IPW membership mean standards and insurance requirements, and both are worth stating. Calling them regulation is the claim that collapses under one customer’s check.
  • The solicitor answer differs from yours. A solicitor’s will comes under SRA regulation and the Legal Ombudsman. Your counter is price, speed, home visits and insurance, stated plainly, not a borrowed word.
  • Insurance is your strongest checkable. Professional indemnity cover with a number on it is the nearest thing the trade has to a register entry. Publish it.
  • Engines cannot tell the three apart. Until they can, the firm that explains the difference owns the only honest answer to the question every customer has.

Why careful will writers lose work to the word “regulated”

The borrowed word

Firms on no register at all describe themselves as regulated, and AI engines repeat it. In a trade with no statutory register the word costs nothing and means nothing.

THE SPLITSRA firm, IPW member, SWW member, or none. Our study will class every recommended name.

Solicitor confusion

Half the answers to “will writer near me” are solicitors. The customer who wanted a £150 will is quoted £400 and gives up, and the will writer who should have won never appears.

REGISTER FACTWill writing is not a reserved legal activity; drafting a will needs no licence anywhere in the UK.

The vanishing firm

Wills are long-term products from firms that can be short-term. A storage promise from a dissolved company is the trade’s quiet scandal.

What actually works

Six things, in rough order of return.

Say exactly what you are

Solicitor, SWW member, IPW member, or independent with insurance. One honest sentence, linked to the body’s member check where one exists.

Publish your prices

Single will, mirror wills, home visit. Solicitors mostly publish; a will writer who hides prices loses the comparison by default.

Put your insurance on the page

Professional indemnity, the cover level, the insurer. In an unlicensed trade this is the proof that travels.

Explain the solicitor difference honestly

A page that says when a solicitor is the right answer, complex estates, contested families, earns trust for every simpler case.

Make storage a product

Where originals are kept, what it costs, what happens if you close. The firm that answers the awkward question wins the cautious customer.

Reviews that name the product

“Mirror wills, home visit, signed in a fortnight” beats stars. Ask at signing, while the relief is fresh.

Quick wins this week

1

Write the what-we-are sentence

Membership or independence stated plainly on the homepage, linked to the member check if you have one.

2

Publish two prices

Single will and mirror wills, honest numbers in pounds, today.

3

Answer the storage question

One paragraph: where originals live, the cost, and the plan if the firm closes.

Common mistakes

Calling membership regulation

The SWW and IPW run codes and require insurance. Neither is a regulator, and the customer who checks will find that out with you attached to the claim.

Competing with solicitors on their ground

Matching solicitor language invites solicitor comparison, which you lose on authority. Compete on price, clarity, speed and insurance instead.

Hiding the price

In a trade where the customer fears being upsold, no published price is read as the upsell. Two honest numbers beat a quote form.

No register. That is the finding.

Will writing is not a reserved legal activity in the UK. Solicitors who write wills are regulated by the SRA for everything they do; will writers are not licensed by anyone, and membership of the Society of Will Writers or the Institute of Professional Willwriters, both checkable, is voluntary. In a trade without a register, published prices, named insurance and a checkable membership are the proof that does a licence’s job.
