This guide explains how travel agents earn and what protection sits under a booking. It quotes no fee amounts, because Whito has not yet collected agent fees and will not invent them. The protection facts are the CAA’s and ABTA’s own, read 5 October 2026.
How agents are paid
Mostly commission from the operators and suppliers they book, built into the price you pay. Some agents add visible service fees, for complex itineraries, ticket changes or bespoke planning, and the visible fee is often the honest one, since it pays the agent to work for you rather than for whichever operator pays best. Ask how the agent earns on your booking; a professional answers plainly.
ATOL: the protection that matters on flights
ATOL is the Civil Aviation Authority’s scheme protecting flight-inclusive package bookings sold by UK businesses: if the firm fails, the scheme covers refunds or getting you home. A protected booking comes with an ATOL certificate naming who holds the protection, issued when you pay. No certificate, no ATOL, whatever the website footer implies. Licence holders are checkable on the CAA’s ATOL site.
ABTA, and the difference
ABTA is a trade association whose members meet its code and whose protection arrangements cover many non-flight packages, rail, cruise and coach holidays among them. Its member search is public. ABTA is not ATOL: a booking can be covered by one, both, or neither, and the trade’s small print leans on customers never asking which.
The booking that has neither
Book flights and hotel separately yourself, or through an agent acting as a mere “click-through”, and much of this protection evaporates; your fallback is the card issuer. That can be a fine, cheaper choice, made knowingly. The failure is paying agent prices while holding DIY protection.
The questions that protect the holiday
Is this booking a package, and is it flight-inclusive? Who holds the ATOL, and will I get the certificate when I pay? If no flights, what covers it, ABTA or other arrangements, and where do I check? What are your own fees, separately from the holiday price? Any agent worth their commission answers all four before taking a penny.
