HomeServe scores highest of the ten UK trades and home services brands compared, at 6.4 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand on 22 October 2026, using publicly visible activity only, against fixed anchors and the same ten UK searches. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the work. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
This board mixes the two ways a household finds a tradesperson: directories that match you to a local trader, and service brands that send their own engineers. The scores are close: nine of the ten sit between 5.0 and 6.4.
HomeServe scores 6.4, just ahead of MyBuilder on 6.3, with Checkatrade and Fantastic Services level on 6.0. HomeServe has 194,392 Trustpilot reviews and replies to 14 of its latest 20. MyBuilder took search, appearing in 6 of 10 UK searches including all five city handyman searches.
Rightio scores lowest at 3.1, with about 2,000 Google ads but no social links, no email capture and a 3.4 Trustpilot rating.

What the channels show
Directories own the city searches
MyBuilder appeared in all five city handyman searches and Checkatrade in one. Fantastic Services appeared for Bristol. The service brands, Dyno-Rod, Aspect and Rightio, appeared in none of 10 UK searches. Cost guides from HomeServe, Checkatrade and Fantastic Services appeared for the two cost searches.
Booking online sets the service brands apart
Dyno-Rod, Fantastic Services and Aspect take bookings online and score 10 on website. The directories score 6 or 7, as they collect a job request rather than a booking.
Huge review counts, mixed replies
Nine of the ten have more than 10,000 Trustpilot reviews. HomeServe replies to 14 of its latest 20, Bark to 15 and TrustATrader to 13. Checkatrade, Dyno-Rod and Fantastic Services reply to none.
Ad spend is heavy
Bark ran about 4,000 Google ads in 30 days, Checkatrade and MyBuilder about 3,000 each, and Aspect and Rightio about 2,000 each. On Meta, Bark ran at least 52 active ads, Checkatrade at least 42, MyBuilder 40 and HomeServe 22, and those four score 10 on paid. Aspect, Rated People, Rightio and TrustATrader showed none.
Key lessons for any trades business
Write the cost page for your trade
The two cost searches went to cost guides from HomeServe, Checkatrade and Fantastic Services. A local firm can write the same page with its own prices for its own town.
Let customers book online
The three brands that take online bookings all score 10 on website. Even a simple slot-booking page with a starting price beats a callback form.
Reply to every review
HomeServe, Bark and TrustATrader reply to most recent reviews. Replying is the one review habit that costs nothing but time.
Use one name everywhere
Checkatrade’s Facebook link goes to a page named VettedLtd, and Dyno-Rod’s profiles use ‘Dyno’. Use your exact trading name on every profile.
Steal this playbook
Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.
- Reply to every review. HomeServe replies to 14 of its latest 20 and scores 9 on reviews.
- Publish a cost guide with your prices. Cost guides took both cost searches here.
- Offer online booking. All three brands that do score 10 on website.
- Build a page for each town you cover. MyBuilder’s city pages took all five city searches.
- Collect an email or app sign-up. Two of the ten capture no email at all.

How we scored
Who is on the board. Ten UK brands a household is likely to meet when looking for a tradesperson or home repair: Checkatrade (vetted trades directory), HomeServe (home emergency cover and repairs), MyBuilder (job-posting marketplace for tradespeople), Dyno-Rod (national drainage and plumbing franchise), Rated People (job-posting marketplace), Fantastic Services (national home services company), TrustATrader (vetted trades directory), Aspect (24-hour property maintenance firm), Bark (marketplace for local services) and Rightio (national multi-trade call-out brand). The board mixes directories and service brands because households use both. Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength.
This board was first published with scores relative to the other brands on it. On 22 October 2026 it was rescored on Whito’s fixed anchors and expanded to ten brands, so scores are not comparable with the earlier edition.
When we looked. All ten brands were read on 22 October 2026, with the ten searches below run once on that date. Meta Ad Library counts were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.
- Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
- Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
- Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
- SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API on 22 October 2026 (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: find a tradesperson near me; how much does a plumber cost UK; boiler service cost UK; home repair services UK; find a reliable builder UK; handyman London; handyman Manchester; handyman Birmingham; handyman Leeds; handyman Bristol.
- Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
- Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
- Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.
These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.
