Before you read: Whito Ltd is not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority and holds no firm reference number. We do not arrange, advise on, recommend or sell any financial product, and we take no commission from any firm we write about. This page is general information, not financial, insurance or legal advice.

Irwin Mitchell scores highest of the ten UK law firms and financial advisers compared, at 6.1 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.

Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand on 22 October 2026, using publicly visible activity only, against fixed anchors. Each channel is scored 0 to 10, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the legal or financial advice. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.

Nine of the ten run Google ads, and every one holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.1 or better. The gap is elsewhere: only two show a price on the homepage, and eight of the ten appeared in none of the ten searches.

Irwin Mitchell leads at 6.1, with 4.8 from 13,664 Trustpilot reviews, about 400 Google ads, 23 Meta ads and the London search. St James’s Place is second on 5.6 and Slater and Gordon third on 5.4.

Ascot Lloyd and Quilter share the lowest score, 4.7. Ascot Lloyd ran no Google or Meta ads, and Quilter links no social platforms from quilter.com, though its app and Trustpilot rating score well.

What the channels show

Reviews are strong across the board

Every brand holds 4.1 or better on Trustpilot. Four have more than 10,000 reviews. Slater and Gordon, Harper James and Thompsons reply to all of their latest 20; Ascot Lloyd replies to none.

Paid search is near universal

Nine of the ten ran Google ads in the last 30 days. Irwin Mitchell and Harper James had about 400 each.

Search goes to directories and publishers

Only Irwin Mitchell and Simpson Millar appeared in any of the ten searches, once each. Unbiased, directories and law firms not on this board took most places.

Prices are rare

Only Slater and Gordon and Harper James show prices on the homepage. Co-op Legal Services promises a fixed fee but does not show one.

Email capture is thin

Five of the ten capture no email beyond an enquiry form. Two have a newsletter.

Key lessons for any law firm or financial adviser

Show a from price

Slater and Gordon shows initial advice from £240 inc VAT. A from price answers the first question most clients ask.

Show your registration number

Slater and Gordon, Harper James and Ascot Lloyd show an SRA or FCA number on the homepage. It lets a client check you on the register.

Reply to every review

Three firms reply to all of their latest 20. A reply shows a worried client how you handle problems.

Build a page for each town

Irwin Mitchell appeared for London with an office page; Simpson Millar for Bristol. A small firm can do the same for its own towns.

Write guides people search for

Irwin Mitchell, Slater and Gordon and Thompsons run guide libraries. Answer the questions clients ask before they call.

Steal this playbook

Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.

  1. Reply to your latest 20 reviews. Three of the ten reply to all of them.
  2. Put your SRA or FCA number on the homepage. Three of the ten do.
  3. Publish a from price for your most common matter. Only two of the ten do.
  4. Write a page for each town you serve. Both brands that appeared in the searches did it with an office page.
  5. Offer a guide in exchange for an email. Five of the ten capture none.

The evidence behind the scores

How we scored

Who is on the board. Ten UK law firms and financial advice firms a consumer or small business is likely to meet: Irwin Mitchell (national law firm), St James’s Place (wealth management and financial advice), Slater and Gordon (consumer law firm), Harper James (commercial law firm for small businesses), JMW Solicitors (full-service law firm), Co-op Legal Services (fixed-fee consumer legal services), Simpson Millar (national law firm), Quilter (advice and wealth management), Ascot Lloyd (financial planning and wealth management) and Thompsons Solicitors (injury and employment law). The five added on 22 October were chosen before the searches were run; Fletchers Solicitors was a first pick but its site could not be reached, so Thompsons Solicitors was added. For Quilter we read quilter.com; its Quilter Cheviot site is on a separate domain. Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength.

When we looked. All ten brands were read on 22 October 2026, against the fixed anchors below, with the ten searches run on the same day. This board was first published with scores relative to the other brands on it. On 22 October 2026 it was rescored on Whito’s fixed anchors and expanded to ten brands, so scores are not comparable with the earlier edition. Meta Ad Library counts were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October.

  • Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
  • Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking, an online checkout or an instant priced quote.
  • Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, 4 for a customer account, 6 for an app, 7 for a newsletter plus an app, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
  • SEO: ten UK searches for this sector, run through a standard web search API (22 October 2026; not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: solicitor for personal injury claim; how much does a solicitor cost UK; financial adviser fees UK; independent financial adviser; make a will solicitor; solicitors London; financial adviser Manchester; solicitors Birmingham; financial adviser Leeds; solicitors Bristol.
  • Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Meta Ad Library counts were read on 23 October 2026, after the library was unavailable on 22 October. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
  • Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1). Where Trustpilot sends a brand’s address to a parent company profile, we used that profile and say so.
  • Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site. We award only what we could verify on the day.

These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the ten scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.

Reply to every review, show your SRA or FCA number, publish a from price for your most common matter, build a page for each town you serve and offer a guide in exchange for an email.

Method, limits and legal position

This page is general information for UK businesses. It is not financial, insurance or legal advice, and it does not take account of your circumstances. Fees, rates, terms and eligibility change, so check the provider’s own current terms, and take regulated advice where you need it, before you act.

Where this page describes a firm’s published prices, terms or register entry, that is a dated record of what the firm or the register showed, not a verdict on the firm.
