The short answer
A UK business using AI to build its website and handle basic marketing content can realistically save a few hundred pounds up front, and several hundred a month if it replaces an outsourced channel. Not thousands up front. The thousands-saved stories come from comparing AI against prices nobody publishes.
Here is the trap. We asked the five main AI engines what a small UK business website costs and scored 220 answers. Four of the five gave typical figures with midpoints between £1,900 and £3,250. The measured published median is £520, with the middle half of prices between £399 and £898. The engines describe the unpublished agency market, where prices arrive by quote. Take an AI estimate at face value and you will believe a website builder saved you £3,000. Against what UK providers actually publish, it saved you £300 to £800.
So the honest picture has three parts. The build saving is real but modest. The recurring saving is the big one: against published monthly medians of £799 for SEO, £470 for PPC management and £358 for social media management, bringing even one channel in-house with AI assistance is worth more per year than any build saving. And the benchmark matters more than either: in our October 2026 accuracy check, AI answers on UK marketing services ran a median 14% above measured prices, and the website question was the worst over-quote in the set.
What the published market charges
All figures in this table are published prices: taken from UK providers’ own public pricing pages, not quotes and not survey budgets. They come from the Whito UK marketing cost dataset of 128 published prices, collected June 2026.
| Service | Published median | Middle half | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small business website, one-off build | £520 | £399 to £898 | 28 prices (range £299 to £4,500) |
| SEO, monthly | £799 | £410 to £1,500 | 45 prices |
| PPC management, monthly | £470 | £285 to £813 | 24 prices |
| Social media management, monthly | £358 | £100 to £750 | 26 prices |
For ongoing website care, the published market is separate and smaller: across 18 published care plan lists read in September 2026, entry plans ran from a £50 median to a £177.50 median at the top tier. The full figures are in our agency retainer prices study.
What AI engines say instead
From the Whito AI Price Accuracy League Table, October 2026 edition: 44 UK marketing cost questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, 220 answers scored against Whito-measured figures.
| Question | Measured answer | Typical AI answer |
|---|---|---|
| Small business website build | £520 published median | Midpoints £1,900 to £3,250 across four engines; Gemini gave £100 to £10,000 |
| UK marketing services generally | Medians in the table above | Median answer 14% above the measured price; 29 of 105 usable answers above the measured range, 6 below |
| UK software prices | GBP prices published by the vendors | 33 of 115 answers quoted dollars for tools priced in pounds |
Engine accuracy overall in that edition: Claude 73.9%, Perplexity 72.7%, Gemini 69.3%, ChatGPT 64.8%, Google AI Mode 61.4%. The top two are a point apart; read them as level.
The dollar habit reaches the vendors’ own pages. When we re-read builder prices on 15 October 2026 from a UK connection, Wix’s plans page showed $17 to $159 a month with a note that dollar prices are displayed for reference only, and Durable, an AI site builder, showed $22 and $41 a month. Neither showed a pound price before checkout.
Published price, quote and budget are three different numbers
Every website cost conversation mixes them up.
A published price sits on a provider’s pricing page, visible to anyone, checkable on a date. These are what Whito measures. A quote is what an agency tells one prospect; it is real but private, and the £1,500 to £5,000 figures AI engines repeat are a description of this market, learned largely from agencies’ own cost guide articles, which are sales material. A budget is what a business planned to spend, and survey-based cost guides report budgets, which include scope the website itself never needed.
AI engines are trained mostly on the second and third kind. That is why they over-quote, and it is why the right benchmark for any quote you receive is the published market, not an AI answer.
Four ways to build a website with AI, costed
Ranked by the combination owners actually care about: skill needed, cost over three years, and whether you can maintain it without calling anyone. Plan prices were read from the vendors’ pricing pages on 15 October 2026; promotional pricing is flagged where it was displayed.
1. Website builder with AI: Squarespace, Wix
No skill needed beyond answering questions about your business, and no one-off cost. Squarespace’s UK plans showed £12 to £79 a month on annual billing, displayed under a 50% off promotion, so expect the regular price at renewal. Wix showed only dollar figures to a UK visitor ($17 to $159 a month), with the pound price appearing at checkout. Three years on an entry plan at the displayed Squarespace price is £432 plus a domain (a .co.uk was £10 a year at IONOS on the same date, often free the first year). Maintainability is best in class, because you edit it yourself. The honest limit: you rent it, and if you stop paying, the site is gone.
2. WordPress with AI assistance
Moderate skill: you will touch hosting, a theme and plugins, and AI writes the copy, page structure and schema markup for you to paste. Hostinger’s UK hosting showed £1.49 to £3.99 a month as introductory pricing on 48-month terms paid upfront, renewing at £7.99 to £13.99 a month; its Premium plan was £143.52 for the full four years. Read hosting prices the way you would read any quote: the renewal rate is the real price. Three-year cost lands around £150 to £400 including a domain, you own everything, and updates are on you. The right choice when the site will grow past ten pages or needs a blog that ranks.
3. Pure AI site generators
Fastest to a first draft, weakest to live with. Durable showed $22 and $41 a month, in dollars, to a UK visitor. Regenerating a page is not the same as editing it, exporting away from the tool is often hard, and these tools invent company details, prices and legal pages most confidently. If you use one, every fact on the site still has to be yours.
4. Freelancer or agency build
£520 at the published median, middle half £399 to £898, plus a care plan (entry median £50 a month across 18 published lists) if you want updates handled. It wins when the website must convert high-value work, when you have no time, or when you need booking, payments or anything custom. How to buy it well is covered below.
What AI does well, and what still needs a human
AI handles page structure, first-draft copy for standard pages, schema markup, meta titles and descriptions, image alt text, and turning rough notes into readable English. Still needs a human: what the business actually offers and at what price, your company number and registered details exactly as they appear at Companies House, the conversion path on every page, photographs of real work, and keeping all of it true six months later.
Where the savings actually come from
The build is the visible saving. The recurring tasks are the bigger one.
The high-return jobs to hand to AI: first-draft copy, where the draft is most of the hours and your corrections are where the quality comes from; new pages from an existing template; competitor research, verified against the rival’s live page before you act on it; content outlines; schema generation; and simple graphics.
Be precise about whether you are saving time or money. If you were paying the £358 published median for social media management and bring it in-house with AI assistance, that is money: about £4,300 a year, minus your hours. If you were already doing it yourself, AI saves time, and time only becomes money when you spend it on billable work. Most large AI-savings claims count imaginary hours against a price nobody published. Count cash against published medians, and count hours separately.
The risks to watch
AI pricing advice is the least reliable thing AI produces: a median 14% over-quote in our October check, with the worst engine scoring 61.4%. Never set your prices, or judge a supplier’s, from an AI answer alone.
Watch the dollar default. One answer in three on software pricing quoted dollars for tools that publish pound prices, and as shown above, some vendors’ own pages do the same to UK visitors. If you are given a dollar figure for a UK purchase, the pound price is one click away on the vendor’s pricing page.
Watch stale prices: the same check caught five answers quoting prices the vendor had since changed. Watch UK specifics in AI-drafted pages: VAT treatment on every price, your exact Companies House details, and British spellings. And treat any claim that AI replaces your website as backwards. Engines cite pages. No page, no citation.
What to do next
First, run the free Whito Visibility Check on your existing site. It checks the structural basics that decide whether search and AI systems can find and trust you, including whether your company number is visible and matches your Companies House record, whether your schema markup is present and consistent, and whether the site is crawlable. Fixing those is free and beats any new spend.
Second, place yourself. Start: no site, or a site that does not state what you sell, to whom, at what price. Fix that before any tool. Build: the site works, so use the task list above to publish consistently and replace one outsourced channel at a time. Scale: only now do multi-channel, automation and paid spend belong in the conversation.
Third, when you do hire a human, audit the quote against published medians before signing. A £2,000 quote for a standard five-page site is £1,480 above the published median; ask in writing what the extra buys. The Whito marketing cost calculator checks a quote against published ranges in under a minute.
The takeaway: AI’s biggest saving is not the build. It is the correction it forces on the whole conversation about cost. The published market charges £520 at the median for a small business website, the AI engines say £1,900 to £3,250, and the agencies quote in private. The owner who knows all three numbers, and which kind each one is, stops overpaying everywhere.
Method and limits
Published prices come from the Whito UK marketing cost dataset: 128 prices from UK providers’ public pricing pages, collected June 2026, each with a source URL and collection date. AI answers come from the Whito AI Price Accuracy League Table: 44 questions, five engines, one answer each, collected 6 October 2026, scored against Whito-measured figures under rules fixed before the run, full log published with that study. Builder, hosting and domain plan prices were re-read from the vendors’ UK pricing pages on 15 October 2026; where a page displayed promotional pricing, that is stated beside the figure. Whito uses AI tools, including Claude, in its research process; scoring rules are mechanical and published.
Limits, stated plainly. Providers who publish prices may be cheaper than quote-only agencies, so the £520 median describes the buyable published market, not the whole market. Samples are modest: 24 to 45 prices per service category. Prices drift, and every figure here carries its collection date for that reason. None of this proves a £3,000 agency quote is wrong for a complex brief; it proves £3,000 is not what the published market charges for a standard small business site.
Questions people ask
How much does a small business website cost in the UK?
The published median is £520 one-off, with the middle half of 28 published prices between £399 and £898 (Whito dataset, June 2026). AI engines typically quote £1,900 to £3,250, which describes the unpublished agency quote market rather than published prices.
How much can AI actually save on a website?
Realistically £300 to £800 against the published median if you build it yourself with a builder and AI, plus the builder subscription. Claims of thousands saved usually compare against AI-quoted figures, which ran 3.7 to 6.3 times the published median when we checked in October 2026.
Are AI cost estimates accurate for UK businesses?
Treat them as a starting point, not a benchmark. Across 220 answers we scored in October 2026, the median answer ran 14% above measured prices, one answer in three on software quoted dollars for pound-priced tools, and the best engine scored 73.9%.
Where do the real AI savings come from?
Recurring work, not the build: first-draft copy, new pages, research and schema. Against published monthly medians (£799 SEO, £470 PPC management, £358 social), replacing one outsourced channel with AI-assisted in-house work is the largest measurable saving.
