Anyone with a van can trade as a removal company tomorrow. No register has to approve them, and the customer pays in advance. That combination is why this trade needs its own checks, and why they all happen before the deposit, not after. The checks take a few minutes.

Check one: the company behind the quote

Take the exact name on the quote and find it at Companies House. You are looking for three things: the company exists, it is active, and it has some history, because a months-old company asking for a large advance payment deserves a harder look. If the brand on the website does not match any company record, ask for the legal name and number; firms that handle everything you own should manage that question easily.

Check two: BAR membership, and what it buys you

The British Association of Removers is a voluntary trade body, not a regulator, and its member search is public. Membership matters for one concrete reason: BAR members protect advance payments through the association’s Advanced Payment Guarantee, so if a member firm stops trading before your move, your deposit is covered. Non-membership is not a verdict on a firm, but with a non-member the deposit question below carries all the weight.

Check three: insurance, in writing

Ask what cover applies to your goods in transit, per item and in total, and get it in writing. The standard liability buried in terms can be a token figure per item. If your belongings are worth more than the cover, ask about declared-value cover before the move, not during the claim.

Check four: the reviews that count

Ignore the stars, read the one-star reviews for patterns: deposits kept after cancellations, damage claims refused, day-of-move price increases. One angry customer is noise. The same story three times is the firm telling you who they are.

The booking test

A professional remover surveys before quoting, names its legal entity, explains its insurance, and can say in one sentence how your deposit is protected. A firm that fails two of those four is asking you to fund a gamble with everything you own on the van.
