This guide explains how physiotherapy is priced and bought in the UK. It quotes no session prices, because Whito has not yet collected physio prices and will not invent them; clinics publish their own, dated on their own pages. When Whito runs its physio price collection, it will appear here.

Try the funded routes first

Much of England offers NHS physiotherapy self-referral, no GP visit needed, and many employers’ health schemes and private medical policies cover physio with little or no excess. The waiting list is the price of the NHS route; for a problem that can wait, it is often the right price. Private physio exists for speed, continuity with one clinician, and conditions the local pathway handles thinly.

How private pricing works

Almost every clinic prices the same shape: a longer initial assessment at one price, shorter follow-ups at a lower one, and sometimes packages of sessions at a small discount. The assessment is the real product, diagnosis, plan, and an honest estimate of how many sessions you need. A clinic that cannot say after assessment roughly how many sessions and why is selling sessions, not treatment.

What moves the price

Location, as ever. The clinician’s specialism, sports injury, neuro, paediatric. Home visits against clinic visits. And the extras sold alongside, acupuncture, shockwave, massage, which are adjacent services, priced separately, and worth judging separately.

Insurance-funded physio

If an insurer is paying, confirm the clinic is recognised by that insurer before the first session, and ask who settles the bill. The trade’s common friction is the patient stuck between a clinic’s invoice and an insurer’s session cap; one email before treatment beats three after.

The check before any of it

“Physiotherapist” is a protected title: anyone using it must be on the Health and Care Professions Council register, which is public and searchable in seconds. Titles like “sports therapist” are not the same thing and carry no such register. Whito’s guide to checking a physiotherapist on the HCPC register covers it; the price list only matters at clinics whose names pass.
