Physiotherapy has the cleanest check in private healthcare: “physiotherapist” is a protected title, anyone using it must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, and the register is public. The catch is that the check works on people, not brands, and the lookalike titles around the trade are not protected at all. Two minutes covers it.
The check itself
Search the clinician’s name on the HCPC register at hcpc-uk.org. A current entry means the person may lawfully practise as a physiotherapist; no entry under any plausible spelling means the title is being misused, which is an offence, and your answer. Many physios also belong to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, the “chartered” in a title; that is the professional body, a real signal, and still distinct from the register that makes practice lawful.
The titles that look protected and are not
Sports therapist, massage therapist, rehab specialist, movement coach: none of these are protected titles, and no statutory register covers them. Some practitioners under those titles are excellent; the point is only that the physiotherapist check does not apply to them, so the word on the website decides which check exists. If the booking page says physiotherapy, a named registrant should be findable.
The clinic-name trap
The register knows people; your booking is with a brand. Good clinics name their clinicians with their registration numbers, and the check takes seconds. A clinic that will not say which registered physiotherapist you will see has turned a two-minute check into a question mark, and there are too many good clinics to spend your back on a question mark.
When this matters most
First visits to a new private clinic, home-visit physio, anyone treating children, and any online consultation service. In each case the question is the same single sentence: which HCPC-registered physiotherapist will be treating me?
If you run a clinic
Publish every clinician’s name and HCPC number on the site. It is the cheapest trust-building a regulated clinic can do, and it is exactly what lets a cautious patient, or an AI engine, safely recommend you by name.
