Childcare is the rare trade where the register is strong: every nursery in England must be registered with Ofsted, inspections are published, and the records are public and free. The gap is that most parents stop at a one-word grade. This guide is the two-minute check and the ten-minute read.

Find the registration

Search the provider on Ofsted’s reports site by name or postcode. The entry confirms the provider is registered at that address, shows the registration history, and lists every inspection report. If the nursery a website or an AI answer recommended does not appear at the address given, trust the register: nurseries close, move and change owners, and old listings outlive all three.

Read the date before the grade

A grade is a snapshot, and the first thing to check is when the snapshot was taken. An Outstanding from many years ago, under a previous owner, tells you less than a recent Good. Ownership changes matter in this trade, the register shows the registered person, and a nursery sold since its last inspection is effectively uninspected under its current management.

Read past the headline

Inside the report, the useful material is specific: what inspectors saw in the rooms, what the provider was asked to improve, and anything about leadership and staff turnover. One phrase worth taking seriously anywhere it appears is a weakness in safeguarding; that is never a cosmetic finding.

Match the names

The brand over the door, the registered provider on the register, and the company you pay can be three different names, especially in nursery groups. Note the registered person from the Ofsted entry and the company on your contract, and let the paperwork agree before you do.

Then visit

The register rules nurseries out, not in. The visit, the questions about staff turnover and ratios, and how the manager talks about the last report do the rest. A manager happy to discuss their Ofsted report, including the bits they are fixing, is showing you the culture you are buying into.
