This guide explains what decides landscaping prices and how to buy the work safely. It quotes no price ranges, because Whito has not yet collected landscaping prices and will not invent them. When Whito runs its landscaping price collection, published prices only and dated, it will appear here.

Design and build are two purchases

A garden design is a product in its own right, drawings, planting plans, costed specifications, and paying for one separately is often the cheapest decision in the whole project, because it lets several landscapers quote against the same specification. A design-and-build quote bundles both; fine, but then the quotes you compare are not comparing the same garden.

What actually drives the build price

Hard landscaping dominates: patios, walls, decking, fencing, where materials often cost as much as labour and the material choice, imported stone against concrete slabs, swings the price violently. Access is the quiet multiplier, since a garden only reachable through the house turns every tonne of waste and stone into hand-carried labour. And the ground itself is the classic surprise: drainage, roots, buried rubble. A quote that includes a contingency for what is under the lawn is more honest than one that does not mention it.

How payment should work

Landscaping is bought in stages, and payment should follow: a modest deposit, staged payments tied to completed stages, and a final payment after the walkthrough. Large upfront payments for materials are sometimes legitimate for big hard-landscaping jobs; if asked, pay for named materials delivered to your property, not a round number on trust.

The checks, in a trade with no licence

No register licenses landscapers. The checkable things: the company at Companies House, active, under the name on the quote; membership of the British Association of Landscape Industries or the Association of Professional Landscapers, both voluntary, both checkable on their own member searches; insurance, asked for in writing; and the firm’s own completed jobs, ideally one you can see. Photographs are claims; addresses are evidence.

The questions that protect you

Is this quote built on a written specification I can show other firms? What happens on price if the ground throws a surprise? How are payments staged? What legal entity am I paying, and what cover applies if a wall fails a year on? Good landscapers answer these with relief, because the customers who ask them are the ones who pay on time.
