Eye care is a regulated trade with a public register most customers have never heard of. The General Optical Council registers the people, optometrists and dispensing opticians, and optical businesses using protected titles, and its registers are searchable by anyone. Here is the two-minute check and when it earns its keep.
Who must be registered
Sight tests in the UK may only be performed by registered optometrists (or doctors). “Optometrist” and “dispensing optician” are protected titles: using them unregistered is an offence. Optical businesses trading under those titles register with the GOC too. The high street is overwhelmingly compliant; the register matters at the edges, online sellers, pop-up services, and names you cannot place.
How to run the check
The GOC register at optical.org is searchable by name or registration number. For a person, the entry confirms registration and status. For a practice, search the business name. A practice that displays its optometrists’ names, most do, makes the check trivial: pick the name off the website or the certificate on the wall and look it up.
Where the check earns its keep
Buying glasses or lenses online from an unfamiliar seller: check who is dispensing and under what registration, especially for children’s glasses and contact lenses, where the rules are tighter. Home-visit sight tests: the visiting optometrist has a name, and the name has a register entry, or it does not. And any service that avoids naming a single registered person is answering your question by omission.
The names game, here too
The brand over the door, the company you pay and the registered individuals are different layers. For the clinical part, the individual’s registration is what counts; for the purchase, the company at Companies House. Two minutes covers both.
If you run a practice
Name your optometrists on your site with their GOC numbers, and the check becomes your marketing: the practice that volunteers its register entries is the one the cautious customer, and increasingly the engines, can safely recommend.
