Gas Engineer Marketing Guide UK 2026

Marketing for gas engineers

Gas is the trade where the law does your positioning for you: anyone working on gas must be on the Gas Safe Register. Customers can check you in two minutes, AI engines repeat whoever is checkable, and most firms show neither the number nor the proof. This page covers how to be the one they can check.

FINDING

AI engines told people a firm was Gas Safe registered 20 times. Twice, the answer carried the registration number that lets you check.

Start, Build, Scale

The right order for gas engineers

Do the stages in order. Nothing in Build works while Start is missing.

Start, Build, Scale for gas engineers: the free foundations first, then systems and proof, then measurement. The three stages are listed in full in this figure.

Start

  • Gas Safe registration number in plain text on every page
  • Google Business Profile matching your register entry, with your real coverage area
  • Honest prices for boiler service, call-out and landlord certificates

Build

  • One page per service and area
  • Reviews asked for by text after each job, naming the job
  • Missed-call text-back, because broken boilers do not wait

Scale

  • Track cost per job won
  • Landlord and letting agent contracts for annual certificates
  • Measure which services actually make money

What we know, and what we have not measured yet

Unlike most trades Whito covers, gas has two studies of its own. The October 2026 register check asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode for a trustworthy gas engineer in 12 UK cities, then checked every registration claim against the Gas Safe Register the same day. The heating engineer search study sorted 149 first-page results across 15 towns and tried to verify the local firms that came back. The cross-industry figure, 90% of Google AI Mode answers citing the business’s own site, comes from our August 2026 answers log.

What we have not measured yet: we have not priced emergency gas call-outs the way we have for plumbers, electricians and locksmiths, and our register check ran at business level, not engineer level.

The wider picture across every industry we track is in the UK AI Visibility Index.

Whito need-to-know for gas engineers

  • The trade is regulated, and that is your advantage. Almost every other trade has to invent proof. You have a register with legal force behind it. The firms that win are the ones that put the number where customers and engines can read it.
  • Claims travel without their evidence. AI engines repeat Gas Safe registered freely and almost never carry the number. Put your number next to the claim everywhere it appears, so any answer that quotes you can be checked.
  • A broken boiler is a distress purchase. The customer decides in minutes, in winter, often at night. Everything that makes you checkable has to be in place before the emergency.
  • A check that fails is worse than no check. If the name on your site does not match your register entry, the customer who bothers to look concludes the worst. Match your names before you spend a pound on anything else.

Why registered engineers lose work to lookalikes

The claim without the number

Anyone can type Gas Safe registered on a website, and AI engines repeat the words without the evidence. The registration number that would let a customer check the claim almost never travels with it.

From our study20 registration claims in AI answers. 2 came with a number.

Page one belongs to middlemen

Search for a heating engineer when the boiler dies and much of what comes back is directories, lead platforms and manufacturer finders rather than engineers’ own sites. The engineer who does the job ends up renting attention from the sites that captured it.

From our study149 first-page links across 15 towns, and a quarter of the local firms we sampled could not be verified.

The name that fails the check

Your van says one name, the register says another, Companies House a third. Every mismatch makes an honest firm look doubtful to the one customer who actually checks, and to any engine trying to verify you.

Cross-industry30% of UK tradespeople we checked could not be verified at Companies House (Whito, July 2026).

What actually works

Six things, in rough order of return.

Print the number, everywhere

Your Gas Safe registration number in plain text on every page, on your Google Business Profile and on your invoices. Text, not a badge image: customers and engines can only read text.

Match your names

Register entry, Companies House, website and Google profile should carry the same trading name. A check that succeeds first try is the whole point of being registered.

Publish prices for the jobs people book

Boiler service, landlord gas safety certificate, first-hour call-out. Three honest numbers in pounds pre-empt the phone-around and separate you from firms that hide pricing.

Reviews that name the job

A review saying annual service, arrived when booked beats five anonymous stars. Ask by text the same day, while the boiler is still warm.

Be reachable when boilers break

Cold snaps decide your year. Missed-call text-back and an emergency page that says what happens next win the jobs that never reach a second call.

Treat landlords as contracts, not jobs

A landlord with five properties is five certificates a year, every year. Remind them before renewal dates and the work renews itself.

Quick wins this week

1

Add the number today

Your Gas Safe registration number in plain text on your homepage, next to your company number.

2

Publish three prices

Boiler service, landlord certificate, first-hour call-out. On the site today, honest, in pounds.

3

Set up missed-call text-back

A customer with a dead boiler calls the next number on the list. A text back within a minute keeps you in the running.

Common mistakes

Hiding the number behind a badge

A Gas Safe logo saved as an image proves nothing and reads as nothing. The registration number in text is the proof. The badge is decoration.

Leading with claims nobody can check

Trusted, approved and reliable cannot be verified. Your register entry can. Lead with the checkable claim and let it carry the rest.

Buying leads in a distress trade

Lead platforms sell the same broken boiler to several engineers at once. Paying to race for your own local demand is a tax on weak visibility, and the fixes above remove the tax.

The register that matters

Gas Safe Register. The one with legal force.

Unlike almost every trade Whito covers, gas work is regulated. Any business working on gas appliances must be on the Gas Safe Register, checking is free at gassaferegister.co.uk by business name or registration number, and every registered engineer carries an ID card stating the work they are qualified to do. For a gas engineer this is not paperwork. It is the one marketing claim no competitor can fake.
